Beneficial Effects of a Moderately High-Protein Diet on Telomere Length in Subjects with Overweight or Obesity.

Nutrients

January 2025

Department of Nutrition, Food Sciences and Physiology, Center for Nutrition and Research, University of Navarra, 31008 Pamplona, Spain.

Background And Aim: Telomere length (TL) is a key biomarker of cellular aging, with shorter telomeres associated with age-related diseases. Lifestyle interventions mitigating telomere shortening are essential for preventing such conditions. This study aimed to examine the effects of two weight loss dietary strategies, based on a moderately high-protein (MHP) diet and a low-fat (LF) diet on TL in individuals with overweight or obesity.

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is a key mediator in antitumor immunity and immunotherapy responses, yet its clinical applications remain restricted to chronic granulomatous disease and malignant osteopetrosis. IFN-γ effectiveness as a standalone treatment has shown limited success in clinical trials and its potential for synergistic effects when combined with immunotherapies is under clinical exploration. A particularly compelling combination is that of IFN-γ with Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists that holds significant promise for cancer treatment.

Neuroprotective Effects of Dexamethasone in a Neuromelanin-Driven Parkinson's Disease Model.

J Neuroimmune Pharmacol

December 2024

Gene Therapy for CNS Disorders Program, Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra that primarily affects movement control. Neuroinflammation plays a pivotal role in driving the disease's progression. The persistent inflammatory state in the brain exacerbates neuronal damage, creating a cycle that perpetuates the neurodegenerative process.

A Joanna Briggs Institute Framework Approach to Shared Decision Making in End-of-Life.

Health Expect

October 2024

Department of Community, Maternity and Pediatric Nursing, Campus Universitario, University of Navarra, School of Nursing, Pamplona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The goal of the study is to help patients with cancer make decisions about starting palliative care (which is special care for those who are very sick) using a helpful tool called a patient decision aid (PtDA).
  • The research looked at 15 different studies to find out the best ways to help patients and their families make these important decisions together.
  • It was found that training healthcare workers and creating clear guides (like videos) are really important for making sure patients feel supported and satisfied during their end-of-life care.

Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic trematode that infects livestock animals and humans, causing significant health and economic burdens worldwide. The extensive use of anthelmintic drugs has led to the emergence of resistant parasite strains, posing a threat to treatment success. The complex life cycle of the liver fluke, coupled with limited funding and research interest, have hindered progress in drug discovery.

The transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among wild animal species may hold significant epidemiological implications. However, this issue is seldom explored due to the perceived complexity of these systems, which discourages experimental investigation. To address this knowledge gap, we chose a configuration of birds and mammals coexisting in an urban green area as a research model: the rook Corvus frugilegus and the striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius.

Background And Objectives: There is an urgent need to identify novel noninvasive biomarkers for Alzheimer disease (AD) diagnosis. Recent advances in blood-based measurements of phosphorylated tau (pTau) species are promising but still insufficient to address clinical needs. Epigenetics has been shown to be helpful to better understand AD pathogenesis.

ISTUN Instituto de Salud Tropical, Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Navarra, c/Irunlarrea 1, E-31008 Pamplona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Leishmaniasis, especially prevalent in countries like Italy and Spain, is spreading due to climate change and increased travel, necessitating the study of new parasite strains.
  • This research focused on two newly isolated parasite strains, NAV and TDL, from infected dogs, which showed slower growth and higher sensitivity to treatments compared to the established strain BCN 150.
  • The study found that NAV and TDL had enhanced infection capabilities and a different gene expression profile, suggesting they could be valuable for further research on leishmaniasis in Mediterranean regions.

This study analyses the effects of Maresin 1 (MaR1), a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-derived specialized proresolving lipid mediator with anti-inflammatory and insulin-sensitizing actions, on the expression of adipokines, including adiponectin, leptin, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), and irisin (FNDC5), both in vitro and in in vivo models of obesity. The in vivo effects of MaR1 (50 μg/kg, 10 days, oral gavage) were evaluated in epididymal adipose tissue (eWAT), liver and muscle of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice. Moreover, two models of human differentiated primary adipocytes were incubated with MaR1 (1 and 10 nM, 24 h) or with a combination of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α, 100 ng/mL) and MaR1 (1-200 nM, 24 h) and the expression and secretion of adipokines were measured in both models.

Electronic address:

Synucleinopathies are a group of neurodegenerative diseases without effective treatment characterized by the abnormal aggregation of alpha-synuclein (aSyn) protein. Changes in levels or in the amino acid sequence of aSyn (by duplication/triplication of the aSyn gene or point mutations in the encoding region) cause familial cases of synucleinopathies. However, the specific molecular mechanisms of aSyn-dependent toxicity remain unclear.

Annexins (ANXs) exert different functions in cell biological and pathological processes and are thus known as double or multi-faceted proteins. These sophisticated proteins might express on both parasite structure and secretion and in parasite-infected host cells. In addition to the characterization of these pivotal proteins, describing their mechanism of action can be also fruitful in recognizing their roles in the pathogenesis of parasitic infections.

Article Synopsis
  • Ivermectin (IVM) is a powerful antiparasitic drug whose effectiveness is limited by low oral bioavailability, prompting the development of new formulations.
  • This study successfully created poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanocapsules containing IVM, incorporating pumpkin seed oil (PSO) for improved solubility and stability.
  • The optimized nanocapsules showed high encapsulation efficiency, maintained stability over time, and exhibited reduced toxicity alongside enhanced antiparasitic activity against Strongyloides venezuelensis compared to free IVM.

  • - The deficiency of CITRIN, an aspartate-glutamate carrier in the liver, leads to four clinical conditions, including neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis and citrullinemia type II, primarily due to disruptions in the malate-aspartate shuttle.
  • - Research showed that introducing aralar, a similar carrier found in the brain, could help mitigate the effects of CITRIN deficiency by improving the NADH/NAD ratio and increasing malate-aspartate shuttle activity in liver cells of mice.
  • - Comparison of citrin and aralar levels revealed that mouse liver has significantly higher aralar compared to human liver, suggesting that boosting aralar expression in humans could be a promising therapy for restoring liver

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of age-related dementia. Amyloid precursor protein () is the precursor of Aβ peptides, and its role in AD has been widely investigated. Recently, it has been reported that a circular RNA (circRNA) originated from gene can serve as a template for Aβ synthesis, postulating it as an alternative pathway for the Aβ biogenesis.
