Background: Over 400 million people are diabetic. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are characterized by decreased functional β-cell mass and, consequently, decreased glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. A potential intervention is transplantation of β-cell containing islets from cadaveric donors.

Background: Handheld devices can automatically give an estimate of refraction. The established method for refraction comparison using spherical equivalent (M) and J0, J45 vector transformations by Bland-Altman analysis is too complex for non-eye doctors involved with vision screening and remote vision clinics. Therefore, a simpler comparison technique was developed.

Otolaryngology is a small and highly sought-after surgical subspecialty with sparse residency positions, making it competitive to match into. Allopathic (MD) students without home otolaryngology residency programs, osteopathic (DO) medical students, and underrepresented minorities have historically faced additional challenges in matching into otolaryngology. These specific populations generally experience limited opportunities in establishing mentors, engaging in scholarly activity, and gaining early exposure to clinical settings.

This report describes the rare complication of first-bite syndrome (FBS) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Although FBS is well known in otolaryngologic literature, it is rarely discussed in relation to vascular surgery. FBS is most commonly a postoperative pain syndrome that is thought to be the result of selective parotid gland sympathetic denervation.

The osteopathic (DO) medical profession has seen a substantial increase in popularity, evident by the drastic increase in the DO physician workforce and increasing number of DO graduates in the United States. Osteopathic medical schools have historically been primary care focused, resulting in a majority of their graduates pursuing practice in those specialties. This focus may be inadvertently creating a disadvantageous environment for DO students who aim to pursue specialized or traditionally competitive fields in medicine.

Locomotion on the narrow and compliant supports of the arboreal environment is inherently precarious. Previous studies have identified a host of morphological and behavioral specializations in arboreal animals broadly thought to promote stability when on precarious substrates. Less well-studied is the role of the tail in maintaining balance.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting over 6.1 million people worldwide. Although the cause of PD remains unclear, studies of highly penetrant mutations identified in early-onset familial parkinsonism have contributed to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying disease pathology.

What Is Known And Objective: A pandemic can strain all aspects of the healthcare system, including the ability to monitor the safety of medication use. Reviewing the adequacy of medication safety practices during the COVID-19 pandemic is critical to informing responses to future pandemics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate medication safety practices at a height of both COVID-19 cases and hydroxychloroquine use.

Secretory organs are critical for organismal survival. Yet, the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms governing their development and maintenance remain unclear for most model secretory organs. The Drosophila embryonic salivary gland (SG) remedies this deficiency as one of the few organs wherein direct connections from the expression of the early patterning genes to cell specification to organ architecture and functional specialization can be made.

Mastication and drinking are rhythmic and cyclic oral behaviors that require interactions between the tongue, jaw and a food or liquid bolus, respectively. During mastication, the tongue transports and positions the bolus for breakdown between the teeth. During drinking, the tongue aids in ingestion and then transports the bolus to the oropharynx.

Problem: The COVID-19 pandemic required rapid changes to medical curricula, forcing emergent transition to purely remote learning. At Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM), all in-person sessions were suspended on March 16, 2020. One course affected included the first-year, 4-week Respiratory System course which began on March 9.

Mosquitoes are the greatest animal threat to human health, causing hundreds of millions of infections and around 1 million deaths each year. All mosquito-borne pathogens must traverse the salivary glands (SGs) to be transmitted to the next host, making this organ an ideal target for interventions. The adult SG develops from precursor cells located in the larval SG duct bud.

We present a case of a 69-year-old female who arrived in hemorrhagic shock with symptoms of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Imaging on admission was diagnostic of a large splenic artery pseudoaneurysm, which was presumed to have bled into the pancreatic duct given clinical symptoms of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The pseudoaneurysm was successfully treated with coil embolization resulting in resolution of clinical symptoms.

Brucella melitensis is an intracellular bacteria causing disease in humans as an incidental host. The infection initiates as acute flu-like symptoms and may transform into a chronic cyclic infection. This cyclic infection may be partly due to the bacteria's ability to persist within antigen presenting cells and evade the CD8 + T cell response over long periods of time.

Objectives: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is characterized by recurrent laryngeal papillomas and treated with repeated surgical excision. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine prevents infection with strains of HPV unrelated to RRP, and has recently been shown to increase the interval between surgeries when used as an adjuvant. The objective of this study was to report one case from our institution in which HPV vaccination was found to induce spontaneous regression of disease, absent of surgical intervention or use of other adjuvants.
