Angioedema results from the decreased degradation of vasoactive peptides such as substance P and bradykinin. In this study, we sought to clarify whether dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that suppress the degradation of substance P and bradykinin are involved in angioedema onset. We calculated information coefficients (ICs) by performing a disproportionality analysis to evaluate DPP-4/ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how prematurity, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and neonatal stress impact intellectual impairment in children with very low birth weight (VLBW).
  • It involved a national cohort of 248 VLBW children in Japan, assessing their IQ/DQ at age 3 or older and using structural equation modeling to analyze influential factors.
  • Findings revealed that neonatal stress had the strongest negative impact on IQ/DQ, more so than IUGR and prematurity, highlighting the need for strategies to reduce neonatal stress and monitor fetal growth during pregnancy.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism type1A (PHA1A) is the renal form of pseudohypoaldosteronism with autosomal dominant inheritance. PHA1A is caused by haploinsufficiency of the mineralocorticoid receptor, which is encoded by NR3C2. We encountered an infant who was diagnosed with PHA1A due to hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and poor weight gain in the neonatal period.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is useful for the differential diagnosis of subepithelial lesions (SELs); however, not all of them are easy to distinguish. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the commonest SELs, are considered potentially malignant, and differentiating them from benign SELs is important. Artificial intelligence (AI) using deep learning has developed remarkably in the medical field.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how malnutrition, based on GLIM criteria, affects the 90-day mortality of hospitalized patients with acute decompensated heart failure, taking renal function into account.
  • A total of 314 patients were analyzed, revealing a 14% mortality rate within 90 days, with 24.2% identified as malnourished; both malnutrition and severe renal insufficiency were independent predictors of mortality.
  • The combination of malnutrition and reduced renal function significantly increased mortality risk, indicating that using GLIM criteria for nutrition screening could enhance mortality predictions in these patients.

We investigated whether peripheral combination treatment of a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and leptin improves glucose metabolism in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) model mice. Twelve-week-old male C57BL6 mice were intraperitoneally administered a high dose of streptozotocin to produce IDDM. IDDM mice were then divided into five groups: SGLT2 inhibitor treatment alone, leptin treatment alone, leptin and SGLT2 inhibitor co-treatment, untreated IDDM mice, and healthy mice groups.

Previous studies suggest that signaling by the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type B receptor (GABAR) is involved in the regulation of binge eating, a disorder which might contribute to the development of obesity. Here, we show that intermittent access to a high fat diet (HFD) induced binge-like eating behavior with activation of dopamine receptor d1 (drd1)-expressing neurons in the caudate putamen (CPu) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) in wild-type (WT) mice. The activation of drd1-expressing neurons during binge-like eating was substantially increased in the CPu, but not in the NAc, in corticostriatal neuron-specific GABAR-deficient knockout (KO) mice compared to WT mice.
