Introduction: Sensory dysfunctions and cognitive impairments are related to each other. Although a relationship between tinnitus and subjective olfactory dysfunction has been reported, there have been no reports investigating the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results.
Methods: To investigate the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results, we conducted sensory tests, including hearing and visual examinations.

Abnormal peripheral perfusion (PP) worsens the prognosis of patients with septic shock. Polymyxin B-direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) increases blood pressure and reduces vasopressor doses. However, the modification of PP following administration of PMX-DHP in patients with vasopressor-dependent septic shock have not yet been elucidated.

Background: This study was designed to investigate the incidence and types of pancreatic injury, risk factors, and time-course changes in computed tomographic findings following total aortic arch replacement with moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest.
Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent total arch replacement between January 2006 and August 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. A comparison study between the patients with (group P) and without pancreatic injury (group N) was conducted to elucidate the impact of pancreatic injury.

Objective: Various guidelines recommend that patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) try to achieve clinical remission within 6 months, and early therapeutic intervention is important to this end. This study aimed to investigate short-term treatment outcomes of patients with early-diagnosed RA in clinical practice and to examine predictive factors for achieving remission.
Methods: Of the 210 patients enrolled in the multicenter RA inception cohort, 172 patients who were followed up to 6 months after treatment initiation (baseline) were included.

Background: Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is a probable cause of cryptogenic stroke (CS), and its detection and treatment are important for the secondary prevention of stroke. Insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs) are clinically effective in screening for AF and are superior to conventional short-term cardiac monitoring. Japanese guidelines for determining clinical indications for ICMs in CS are stricter than those in Western countries.

Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most commonly performed procedures by oral maxillofacial surgeons. Delayed-onset infection (DOI) is a rare complication of wisdom tooth extraction, and it occurs ~1-4 weeks after the extraction. In the present study, risk factors for DOI were investigated by retrospectively analyzing the cases of 1400 mandibular wisdom tooth extractions performed at Kagawa University Hospital from April 2015 to June 2022.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is overwhelming healthcare systems worldwide. This study aimed to elucidate factors that influence disease progression to pneumonia and hospitalization before and after antiviral treatment for COVID-19 in an outpatient setting.
Methods: A total of 206 high-risk patients with COVID-19 were treated with sotrovimab, remdesivir, and molnupiravir at the Toshiwakai clinic between January 4 and April 30, 2022.

Background: The effectiveness of long-term dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) to prevent recurrent strokes in patients with lacunar stroke remains unclarified. Therefore, this study aimed to compare and to elucidate the safety and effectiveness of DAPT and single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) in preventing recurrence in chronic lacunar stroke.
Methods: CSPS.

Background: Anterior shoulder instability is frequent among young athletes. Surgical treatment for this injury aims to facilitate an early return to sports (RTS). However, the rate of recurrent instability after surgery is reportedly high among young patients, and it is unclear whether surgery ensures satisfactory RTS.

Background: Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-PTX) is a promising antibody partner for anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). We performed neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for HER2-positive breast cancer (BC) using nab-PTX plus trastuzumab (T-mab) and pertuzumab (P-mab), followed by epirubicin and cyclophosphamide (EC).
Methods: In this multicenter phase II clinical trial (January 2019-July 2020), patients with stage I (T1c)-IIIB HER2-positive primary BC were treated with four cycles of nab-PTX plus T-mab and P-mab, followed by four cycles of EC.

This study evaluated the utility of carbon dioxide (CO) in angiography for the detection of lower gastrointestinal arterial bleeding initially occult to angiography with iodinated contrast media. Fourteen patients underwent CO-enhanced angiography. In all patients, extravasation was identified by contrast-enhanced computed tomography but not by initial iodinated contrast-enhanced angiography.

We evaluated the inner ear distribution of O-labeled saline administered to the human tympanic cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed after intratympanic administration in five healthy volunteers and one patient with cochlear endolymphatic hydrops. In all volunteers, O-labeled water permeated the cochlear basal turn and vestibule at 30 min and disappeared gradually within 2-4 h.

In subcutaneous tumor models, changes in the tumor microenvironment can lead to differences in therapeutic treatment responses between the subcutaneous and parent tumors. Accordingly, we generated a lung carcinogenesis model that combines genetically modified mice (Tg-rasH2 mice) with two-stage chemical carcinogenesis as an alternative to the subcutaneous tumor model. In this model, Tg-rasH2 mice were treated with 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea, followed by butylhydroxytoluene.

Previous studies have suggested that change-related cortical responses are phenomena similar to the onset response and could be applied to the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) paradigm. In the present study, we examined the relationship between LDAEP and the change-related response using electroencephalography findings in 50 healthy subjects. There were five conditions (55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 dB) for LDAEP and five similar conditions (abrupt sound pressure increase from 70 to 75, 80, 85, 90, and 95 dB) for the change-related response.

Age and comorbidities are important factors to be considered in the selection of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) for first-line treatment in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase (CML-CP). However, it is yet unclear whether TKI selection, particularly, imatinib versus second-generation TKIs (2GTKIs), impacts treatment outcomes in the clinical practice. To address this, we compared the clinical outcomes of prospectively registered 452 patients with CML-CP treated with imatinib and 2GTKIs, taking into consideration their age and/or comorbidities.

Background: Many guidelines for nonsurgical treatment of pancreatolithiasis suggest little guidance for patients with pancreatolithiasis who do not have abdominal pain. Some patients with pancreatolithiasis whom we have treated nonsurgically with extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy did not have abdominal pain, and we describe one of them here.
Methods And Results: A 42-year-old man complaining of an 8-kg weight loss over 6 months was admitted to a nearby hospital, where fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c values were 500 mg/dL and 11.
