Understanding the association between initial experimentation with a tobacco product and subsequent patterns of tobacco use among youth is important to informing prevention activities for youth in the US. We conducted an online survey from August to October 2017 among youth aged 13-18 years. Article Synopsis
  • - A streamlined care pathway for patients undergoing transsphenoidal pituitary surgery (TSA) was developed, enabling recovery in a specialized unit that manages complications like cerebrospinal fluid leaks and diabetes insipidus.
  • - The study analyzed 187 TSA surgeries from 2017 to 2020, comparing patients on the new care pathway to those not on it; results showed significant cost savings and shorter lengths of stay for pathway patients.
  • - Patients on the care pathway had reduced total admission costs by an average of $6,376.33 and stayed for 1.27 days less on average, while experiencing a higher rate of postoperative diabetes insipidus but fewer readmissions.

A 16-year-old male patient with Down syndrome diagnosed with AKI and urinary tract infection was treated with meropenem for ESBL-positive in urine culture. Persistently elevated creatinine and persistent post-void residual (PVR) of >300 mL led to further testing, which revealed urethral stricture and a lower sacral Tarlov cyst. Due to no complete improvement with urethral dilatation, he underwent laminectomy and Tarlov cyst fenestration.

Objective: To determine the in-hospital cost implications of an endoscopic expanded endonasal approach (EEEA) for meningioma resection relative to the open transcranial approach.

Methods: All anterior skull base meningioma surgeries performed over a period from January 1, 2015 to October 31th, 2017 were evaluated. The electronic medical record was reviewed for patient factors, tumor characteristics, and cost variables associated with each hospital stay and univariate analysis was performed using R software.

Objective: To determine the in-hospital cost implications of an expanded endoscopic endonasal approach (EEEA) for craniopharyngioma resection relative to the traditional open transcranial approach.

Methods: All craniopharyngioma surgeries performed at a single institution over a period from January 1st 2001 to October 31th 2017 were evaluated. The electronic medical record was reviewed for patient factors, tumor characteristics, and cost variables associated with each hospital stay and univariate regression analysis was performed using R software.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify factors influencing hospital costs after endoscopic transphenoidal pituitary surgery by analyzing patient data over a two-year period.
  • From 190 patients evaluated, the average hospital stay was approximately 4.7 days, with total in-hospital costs averaging around $28,624.
  • Key findings reveal that post-operative complications like cerebrospinal fluid leaks and factors such as smoking and ethnicity significantly affect hospital expenses, highlighting the importance of understanding these cost drivers for future healthcare initiatives.

Objective: Surgical resection of skull base tumors in children is increasingly accomplished through an expanded endonasal approach (EEA). We aim to evaluate the potential effect of the EEA on midfacial growth as a result of iatrogenic damage to nasal growth zones.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of children undergoing craniopharyngioma resection via an open transcranial or EEA.
