  • A 50-year-old male with extensive eye condition was diagnosed with presumed xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) and grade 2 foveal hypoplasia after ophthalmologic and dermatology evaluations.
  • Optical coherence tomography confirmed the foveal hypoplasia, and the patient underwent genetic testing due to the rarity of these two conditions occurring together.
  • The genetic testing revealed mutations in several genes, particularly noting the link of the LYST gene to foveal hypoplasia, contributing to the understanding of this unusual case.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to prepare a sustained-delivery mucoadhesive-thermosensitive formulation containing poloxamer 338 (P338), poloxamer 188 (P188), and mucoadhesive agents, such as chitosan (CHT) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), to increase the ophthalmic bioavailability of timolol maleate (TM).

Materials And Methods: Gels were prepared by mixing different amounts of P338, P188, and a mucoadhesive agent in cold isotonic water using a magnetic stirrer. The sol-gel gelation time of the gels was determined using the test tube inversion method.

  • Post-COVID interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a condition affecting COVID-19 survivors, characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and lung function abnormalities, often identified through CT scans.
  • A study analyzed data from 375 patients who experienced lingering symptoms three months after recovering from COVID-19, finding that 262 of them (about 70%) had post-COVID ILD, with common symptoms including shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, fatigue, and cough.
  • Risk factors for developing post-COVID ILD included active smoking and having been admitted to intensive care during the acute phase of the disease; typical CT findings included ground glass opacities and fibrotic changes, indicating lung damage.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

August 2024

Central Research and Application Laboratory, Agri Ibrahim Cecen University, Agri, Turkey.

Ectoine, a biologically significant compound, was successfully produced by a strain of bacteria capable of utilizing sucrose. In a ground-breaking approach, we harnessed the potential of sugar beet molasses, a by-product rich in sucrose, amino acid, and vitamins, as a growth medium for this purpose. Through meticulous investigation, we identified the ideal conditions for maximizing ectoine synthesis.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has emerged as a vital life-support technique in critical care medicine, providing temporary circulatory and/or respiratory support for patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure unresponsive to conventional therapies. This review aims to outline the importance of ECMO and provide a comprehensive overview of its main applications. Two primary types of ECMO, venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, serve distinct functions in supporting patients with cardiac or pulmonary dysfunction, respectively.

Somatic mutations and polymorphisms may play a role in multiple myeloma (MM) susceptibility and survival. One of the immune checkpoint inhibitors is P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1); the majority of tumor-infiltrating leukocytes express PSGL-1, causing T cell and immune inhibition via PSGL-1 mediator molecules. We aimed to investigate the effect of variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism in the second exon of the PSGL-1 gene on MM susceptibility, response to treatment and survival in our patient group.
