Article Synopsis
  • CNS TB can often be mistaken for other conditions like meningiomas, particularly when affecting the anterior skull base.
  • A case study of a 39-year-old man showed how initial imaging indicated a meningioma, but a biopsy confirmed it was a tuberculoma leading to effective treatment.
  • This highlights the importance of including tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of brain lesions, especially in areas where TB is common, to enhance patient outcomes.

Background:  Meningiomas are one of the most common primary intracranial neoplasms that may present with a wide variety of clinical symptoms, depending on multiple factors such as tumor size, location, and grade. Knowledge of the grade of meningioma correlated with their related symptoms is of great value in developing diagnostic and therapeutic approaches efficiently. Although various knowledge about meningiomas exists, there still seems to be a lacuna as far as explicit relations between tumoral characteristics and the severity or evolution of symptoms are concerned.

Pituitary apoplexy is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition of sudden hemorrhage or infarction within the pituitary gland that results in symptoms of acute onset such as severe headache, visual impairment, and hormonal deficiencies. Though more common in adults, the same criteria for diagnostic and management dilemmas apply to pediatric cases. We present the case of a nine-year-old boy presenting with acute-onset severe headache and significant visual deterioration suggestive of pituitary apoplexy.

Biomarkers such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP) and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) have a role in the pathogenesis of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to explore the differences between serum levels of such biomarkers in severe and non-severe COVID-19 cases and compare them with normal people and to evaluate the sociodemographic variables and chronic diseases effect on the severity of COVID-19. The study included 160 subjects, divided into two groups, a case group of 80 patients, and a control group of 80 normal persons.

Combining viruses and nanoparticles may be a way to successfully treat cancer and minimize adverse effects. The current work aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a specific combination of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) to enhance the antitumor effect of breast cancer in both in vitro and in vivo models. Two human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and AMJ-13) and a normal epithelial cell line (HBL-100) were used and treated with NDV and/or GNPs.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed people to significant and prolonged stress. The psychosocial impacts of the pandemic have been well recognised and reported in high-income countries (HICs) but it is important to understand the unique challenges posed by COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where limited international comparisons have been undertaken. This protocol was therefore devised to study the psychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in seven LMICs using scales that had been designed for or translated for this purpose.

Three-dimensional printing of patient-specific computed tomography lung phantoms: a reader study.

PNAS Nexus

March 2023

Department of Radiology, Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, 3400 Civic Center, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA.

In modern clinical decision-support algorithms, heterogeneity in image characteristics due to variations in imaging systems and protocols hinders the development of reproducible quantitative measures including for feature extraction pipelines. With the help of a reader study, we investigate the ability to provide consistent ground-truth targets by using patient-specific 3D-printed lung phantoms. PixelPrint was developed for 3D-printing lifelike computed tomography (CT) lung phantoms by directly translating clinical images into printer instructions that control density on a voxel-by-voxel basis.

Pregnancy termination for a variety of fetal or maternal conditions has been defined as one of the common obstetrical procedures. The presence of an earlier uterine scar has been found as a highly significant risk factor, which needs to be considered before the election of the misoprostol for the termination of pregnancy (TOP) uses. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of vaginal misoprostol in patients who had an earlier uterine scar, and whether its utilization might result in increasing the risks of uterine ruptures.

There were many studies that attempt to measure the effect of growth factors of platelets through platelet-rich plasma (PRP) techniques on repairing of different human tissues and their efficiency either by platelets account or measuring the concentrations of growth factors secreted from platelets at various experimental conditions, to get the optimal parameters for platelets functions in healing processes. There were little trails dealing with laser and PRP for accelerating healing process that generally takes two methods, either by studding the stimulation effect of LLLT (low-level laser therapy), by subjecting laser irradiation on injured part and left for a period of time that is necessary for photobiostimulation of cell proliferations, then PRP treatment followed, or by studding the direct effects of laser on PRP factors activity. The objectives of this study are to investigate the indirect and prolonged influence of laser irradiation (650 nm with 100 mW output power) on healing processes of knee joints with induced osteoarthritis (OA), by comparison of radiated and non-radiated PRP on repairing of joint cartilage.
