We report a case of tuberculous meningitis without pleocytosis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in a 27-year-old patient admitted for a meningeal syndrome with signs of basilar involvement and an infectious syndrome associated with a hacking cough with whitish sputum and night sweats, evolving for 15 days before her admission, in a context of weight loss of 2 kg, asthenia, and anorexia. Cytobacteriological and chemical analysis of the CSF revealed less than 3 cells/mm white blood cells, high protein levels of 2.54 g/l, and low glucose levels of 0.

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), remains a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The objective of this study was to determine the trends of invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) in adult and elderly population in Casablanca (Morocco) before and after introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) by determining the distribution of pneumococcal serotypes and antibiotic resistance profile of isolated strains.

Article Synopsis
  • The case discusses a male late preterm newborn who developed respiratory distress shortly after birth, revealing meningitis caused by Serotype 17F pneumonia through vertical transmission from the mother.
  • The newborn underwent treatment with multiple antibiotics, including ceftriaxone and gentamycin, due to the antibiotic resistance of the pneumococcal strain.
  • The report emphasizes that symptoms of neonatal pneumococcal meningitis can be atypical, stressing the importance of awareness in diagnosis and treatment.

  • Incomplete 90° clockwise intestinal rotation results in the colon being located on the right side of the abdomen and the small intestine on the left, leading to a mirror image of the common mesentery.
  • A case study of a 19-year-old patient with cerebral palsy showed symptoms of melaena and inflammatory anaemia, and CT scans indicated signs of Crohn's disease along with the mentioned anatomical anomaly.
  • This intestinal rotation anomaly can be asymptomatic and may be accidentally found during evaluations for other medical issues.

  • The PSERENADE project focuses on global surveillance of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) to assess the impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV10/13).
  • Among 138 countries using PCV10/13 as of 2018, 109 had IPD surveillance systems, with data collected from 76, enabling a comprehensive analysis of 240,639 post-vaccine IPD cases.
  • The dataset will aid in understanding the effectiveness of the vaccines across different demographics and vaccination schedules, influencing future immunization policies globally and nationally.

Article Synopsis
  • Serotype 1 (ST1) was a major cause of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) before the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), which include ST1 antigen.
  • The PSERENADE project analyzed global data on ST1 IPD to assess the impact of PCV10/13 on disease rates, using advanced statistical methods.
  • Results showed that after six years of using PCV10/13, there was a 95% reduction in ST1 IPD incidence across all age groups, but there is a need for more data from countries heavily affected by ST1 to improve the findings' applicability.

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1 remains a leading cause of invasive pneumococcal diseases, even in countries with PCV-10/PCV-13 vaccine implementation. The main objective of this study, which is part of the Pneumococcal African Genome project (PAGe), was to determine the phylogenetic relationships of serotype 1 isolates recovered from children patients in Casablanca (Morocco), compared to these from other African countries; and to investigate the contribution of accessory genes and recombination events to the genetic diversity of this serotype.

Results: The genome average size of the six-pneumococcus serotype 1 from Casablanca was 2,227,119 bp, and the average content of coding sequences was 2113, ranging from 2041 to 2161.

Unlabelled: Emphysematous pancreatitis is a rare and fatal complication of acute necrotizing pancreatitis. We report a radioclinical observation of a 61-year-old female patient who consulted for epigastric pain radiating to the back, associated with vomiting and elevated lipasaemia more than 3 times the normal value. The abdominal computerized tomography (CT) scan carried out on the fourth day of hospitalization, based on worsening of the clinical condition, showed pancreatic necrosis associated with the presence of air bubbles.

Examples of successful implementations of national cancer control plans in low-income or middle-income countries remain rare. Morocco, a country where cancer is already the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases, is one exception in this regard. Population ageing and lifestyle changes are the major drivers that are further increasing the cancer burden in the country.
