The role of myocardial performance index in assessment of left ventricular function in patients with valvular mitral regurgitation.

Background: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most commonly encountered valve lesion in modern clinical practice. Severe mitral regurgitation may cause systolic dysfunction. Left ventricular ejection fraction may not be an accurate measurement of LV function in patients with mitral insufficiency.

Multiple and comminuted mandibular fractures: treatment outlines in adverse medical conditions in Iraq.

This study was conducted to evaluate prospectively the simple and more reliable methods in the treatment of multiple and comminuted mandibular fractures in hospitals with limited facilities and a high influx rate of trauma patients such as ours in Baghdad. One hundred patients with multiple and comminuted mandibular fractures of different severities were included in this study. Fifty-four patients were with comminuted and 46 were with multiple mandibular fractures.

Continent diversion with an appendix conduit and an ileocecal bladder.

Since March 1989, 23 patients have undergone continent urinary diversion with an ileocecal bladder and a reimplanted appendix conduit. In 21 patients this procedure was combined with a radical cystectomy. Of the patients 7 required an endoscopic procedure before satisfactory self-catheterization could be established.

Diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectosigmoid and low anterior resection using the autostapler.

Over 200 cases of colonic hemangioma have been reported, with more than 50% occurring in the rectosigmoid. These benign vascular neoplasms usually present in childhood, often with life-threatening hemorrhage. Lack of awareness of the condition continues to lead to errors in diagnosis and management, and may contribute to previously reported mortality rates of 50%.

Spontaneous pneumoretroperitoneum in a renal transplant recipient.

A case of a spontaneous pneumoretroperitoneum in a 16 year old renal transplant recipient is reported. This fatal complication of immunosuppression has not been reported previously.

Renal angiography in potential living related renal donors in Iraq.

Between July 1983 and March 1986, 160 potential living related renal donors underwent renal angiography. One hundred and twenty-eight have (Group 1) and 32 have not (Group 2) become renal donors. The addition of selective renal angiography did not alter the pre-operative arterial prediction made on flush aortography in 102 of 109 renal donors who had both investigations.

Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and coronary artery fistula: a late presentation.

A 41 year old man presented with cyanosis and progressive shortness of breath. Cardiac angiography showed absent central pulmonary arteries, ventricular septal defect, and a fistula between the left coronary artery and pulmonary artery. Most of the blood reaching the lungs came through this fistula.

Infertility due to congenital communication between vas deferens and refluxing triplicated ureter: successful insemination with sperm retrieved from urine. A case report.

A rare congenital malformation consisting of ectopic opening of the vas deferens into the fused segment of a refluxing triplicated ureter (trifid ureter) in an azoospermic man is described. Sperm were found in urine voided after ejaculation. Artificial insemination with sperm recovered from alkalinized urine resulted in pregnancy.
