Sensory perception and memory recall generate different conscious experiences. Although externally and internally driven neural activities signifying the same perceptual content overlap in the sensory cortex, their distribution in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), an area implicated in both perception and memory, remains elusive. Here, we test whether the local spatial configurations and frequencies of neural oscillations driven by perception and memory recall overlap in the macaque PFC using high-density electrocorticography and multivariate pattern analysis.

Genetic modification to restore cell functions in the brain can be performed through the delivery of biomolecules in a minimally invasive manner into live neuronal cells within brain tissues. However, conventional nanoscale needles are too short (lengths of ~10 µm) to target neuronal cells in ~1-mm-thick brain tissues because the neuronal cells are located deep within the tissue. Here, we report the use of nanoscale-tipped wire (NTW) arrays with diameters < 100 nm and wire lengths of ~200 µm to address biomolecule delivery issues.

Microelectrode technology is essential in electrophysiology and has made contributions to neuroscience as well as to medical applications. However, it is necessary to minimize tissue damage associated with needle-like electrode on the brain tissue and the implantation surgery, which makes stable chronic recording impossible. Here, we report on an approach for using a 5 μm-diameter needle electrode, which enables the following of tissue motions, a surgical method.

The release of radiocesium (r-Cs) into natural aqueous systems is of concern because of its extended solubility as an alkaline metal ion and its facile incorporation into living beings. A technique for the selective separation of Cs from an aqueous matrix using dual solid-phase extraction (SPE) systems in a series is proposed in this paper. The SPEs equipped with chelates (Nobias Chelate-PA1 and Nobias Chelate-PB1), an ion-exchange resin (Nobias Ion SC-1), or macrocycles (MetaSEP AnaLig Cs-01 and MetaSEP AnaLig Cs-02) were evaluated in terms of selectivity and retention/recovery behavior toward Cs and other potentially competing ions (Li, Na, K, Rb, Ba, Ca, Mg, and Sr).

Microscale needle-electrode devices offer neuronal signal recording capability in brain tissue; however, using needles of smaller geometry to minimize tissue damage causes degradation of electrical properties, including high electrical impedance and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) recording. We overcome these limitations using a device assembly technique that uses a single needle-topped amplifier package, called STACK, within a device of ∼1 × 1 mm Based on silicon (Si) growth technology, a <3-µm-tip-diameter, 400-µm-length needle electrode was fabricated on a Si block as the module. The high electrical impedance characteristics of the needle electrode were improved by stacking it on the other module of the amplifier.

We report a magnetostriction study of a perovskite LaCoO_{3} above 100 T using our state-of-the-art strain gauge to investigate an interplay between electron correlation and spin crossover. There has been a controversy regarding whether two novel phases in LaCoO_{3} at high magnetic fields result from crystallizations or Bose-Einstein condensation during spin crossover as manifestations of localization and delocalization in spin states, respectively. We show that both phases are crystallizations rather than condensations, and the two crystallizations are different, based on the observations that the two phases exhibit as magnetostriction plateaux with distinct heights.

Waste foundry sand (WFS) from the brass and bronze casting and molding process include various potentially toxic elements (PTEs), such as copper, zinc, tin, and lead. Hence, the utilization of WFS in construction and geotechnical applications evokes environmental concerns due to the rain-induced leaching of PTEs into the groundwater system. The present study investigated the extractive decontamination of WFS using mineral acids, e.

Electronic devices used to record biological signals are important in neuroscience, brain-machine interfaces, and medical applications. Placing electronic devices below the skin surface and recording the muscle offers accurate and robust electromyography (EMG) recordings. The device stretchability and flexibility must be similar to the tissues to achieve an intimate integration of the electronic device with the biological tissues.

A novel and inexpensive fabrication method of multiferroic nanocomposite films via liquid-phase formation is demonstrated in this work. Well-aligned anodized TiO₂ nanotube arrays on a Ti substrate were used as the core template. The anodized TiO₂ nanotube arrays were then hydrothermally treated in Ba(OH)₂ aqueous solution to form BaTiO₃ (BTO) nanotube arrays.

In this paper, we present the analysis and results of a direct measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the CALET instrument onboard the International Space Station, including the detailed assessment of systematic uncertainties. The observation period used in this analysis is from October 13, 2015 to August 31, 2018 (1054 days). We have achieved the very wide energy range necessary to carry out measurements of the spectrum from 50 GeV to 10 TeV covering, for the first time in space, with a single instrument the whole energy interval previously investigated in most cases in separate subranges by magnetic spectrometers (BESS-TeV, PAMELA, and AMS-02) and calorimetric instruments (ATIC, CREAM, and NUCLEON).

We numerically study surface models defined on hexagonal disks with a free boundary. 2D surface models for planar surfaces have recently attracted interest due to the engineering applications of functional materials such as graphene and its composite with polymers. These 2D composite meta-materials are strongly influenced by external stimuli such as thermal fluctuations if they are sufficiently thin.

In this paper, we show that the 3D Finsler geometry (FG) modeling technique successfully explains a reported experimental result: a thin liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) disk floating on the water surface deforms under light irradiation. In the reported experiment, the upper surface is illuminated by a light spot, and the nematic ordering of directors is influenced, but the nematic ordering remains unchanged on the lower surface contacting the water. This inhomogeneity of the director orientation on/inside the LCE is considered as the origin of the shape change that drives the disk on the water in the direction opposite the movement of the light spot.

Herein, we study stress⁻strain diagrams of soft biological materials such as animal skin, muscles, and arteries by Finsler geometry (FG) modeling. The stress⁻strain diagram of these biological materials is always J-shaped and is composed of toe, heel, linear, and failure regions. In the toe region, the stress is almost zero, and the length of this zero-stress region becomes very large (≃150%) in, for example, certain arteries.

Marine protists play an important role in oceanic ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. However, the difficulties in culturing pelagic protists indicate that their ecology and behavior remain poorly understood; phylogeographic studies based on single-cell genetic analyses have often shown that they are highly divergent at the biological species level, with variable geographic distributions. This indicates that their ecology could be complex.

Rare-earths (REs) are key components for the transition to a greener energy profile and low carbon society. The elements turn out to be of limited availability in the market, due to the supply-demand issues, exponential price rises, or geopolitics, which has led to a focus on the exploration of secondary sources for RE reclamation. End-of-life (EoL) nickel-metal hydride batteries, permanent magnets, and fluorescent lamps (FL) have been the primary sources for recyclable REs, while the recovery of REs in EoL FL (Ce, Eu, La, Tb, or Y) includes comparatively fewer processing steps than the other potential sources.

End-of-life (EOL) ships contribute significantly to the flow of recycled industrial Fe and non-Fe metal materials in resource-poor developing countries. The ship scrapping (breaking) and recycling industry (SBRI) recycles 90-95% of the total weight of EOL ships and is currently concentrated in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Turkey, and China, due to the high demand for recyclable and reusable materials there, an abundance of low-cost labor, and lenient environmental regulations. However, the SBRI has long been criticized for non-compliance with standards relating to occupational health, labor safety, and to the management of hazardous materials.

We study the new details of electronic and thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline layered oxychalcogenide systems of (BiO)Cu Ch ( Ch = Se, Te) prepared by using a solid-state reaction. The systems were characterized by using photoemission (PE) spectroscopy and four-probe temperature-dependent electrical resistivity ρ( T). PE spectra are explained by calculating the electronic properties using the generalized-gradient approximation method.

Tetrataenite (L1-FeNi) is a promising candidate for use as a permanent magnet free of rare-earth elements because of its favorable properties. In this study, single-phase L1-FeNi powder with a high degree of order was synthesized through a new method, nitrogen insertion and topotactic extraction (NITE). In the method, FeNiN, which has the same ordered arrangement as L1-FeNi, is formed by nitriding A1-FeNi powder with ammonia gas.

Estimation of cosmic-ray doses is of great importance not only in aircrew and astronaut dosimetry but also in evaluation of background radiation exposure to public. We therefore calculated the cosmic-ray doses on Earth, Moon and Mars as well as inside spacecraft, using Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS. The same cosmic-ray models and dose conversion coefficients were employed in the calculation to properly compare between the simulation results for different environments.
