The task of achieving a good clinical outcome on patients with chronic elbow dislocation is arduous. Any stabilization method used should be robust enough in order to allow for early elbow motion. Immobilization of the elbow for a prolonged time period may lead to stiffness and heterotopic ossification.

Article Synopsis
  • Injury to the axillary artery during surgery for chronic shoulder dislocation is uncommon but can be life-threatening.
  • The case involved an elderly woman whose shoulder dislocation was first treated with closed reduction and later required open surgery due to re-dislocation, during which an axillary artery rupture occurred.
  • A saphenous vein graft was used to repair the rupture successfully, and the humeral head was stabilized with K-wires, followed by CT-angiography for monitoring in the days after surgery.

Introduction: Intra-articular hip injections are routinely performed under sonographic or fluoroscopic guidance in order to improve accuracy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and accuracy of a hip injection technique that does not require the use of fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance and can be performed in the clinic. A combination of radiographic and anatomic landmarks was used in order to perform the hip injection, based on the use of simple hip radiographs.

Thyroid hormone has a differential action on healthy and ischemic heart. Triiodothyronine (T3) administration improved postischemic cardiac function while it limited apoptosis in experimentally induced ischemia. Thus, the present study investigated the potential effects of acute liothyronine (LT3) treatment in patients with anterior myocardial infarction.

Objective: Secure knots are essential in all areas of surgical, medical and veterinary practice. Our hypothesis was that technique of formation of each layer of a surgical knot was important to its security.

Design: Equal numbers of knots were tied, by each of three groups, using three techniques, for each of four suture materials; a standard flat reef knot (FRK), knots tied under tension (TK) and knots laid without appropriate hand crossing (NHCK).

Objective: Τo report outcomes of breakthrough COVID-19 in comparison with COVID-19 in unvaccinated patients with systemic rheumatic diseases (SRDs).

Methods: Patients with SRD with COVID-19 (vaccinated and unvaccinated) were included by their rheumatologists in a registry operated by the Greek Rheumatology Society in a voluntarily basis. Type, date and doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were recorded, and demographics, type of SRD, concurrent treatment, comorbidities and COVID-19 outcomes (hospitalisation, need for oxygen supplementation and death) were compared between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients.

Invasive cervical cancer following treatment of pre-invasive lesions: A potential theory based on a small case series.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

September 2021

Institute or Reproductive and Developmental Biology, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Imperial College London, London, UK.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to present a single department's experience on cervical cancer cases following previous excision of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and to discuss potential pathogenesis.

Methods: Nine cervical cancer cases meeting the inclusion criteria, with available pathological and follow-up data, were considered eligible for this study.

Results: The majority (7/9) have had clear excisional margins.

Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are data aggregation tools based on computer technology that assist clinicians to promote healthy weight management and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. We carried out a randomised controlled 3-month trial to implement lifestyle modifications in breast cancer (BC) patients by means of CDSS during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, 55 BC women at stages I-IIIA were enrolled.

The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been inversely associated with lung cancer (LC) risk. Hereby we show the preliminary results of our prospective randomised controlled trial in inflammatory and nutritional status of LC patients after 3-month implementation of MD. In total, 30 patients with small-cell or non-small-cell LC (stages III-IV) were enrolled.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of serious neonatal infections. Maternal GBS colonization is associated with early- and late-onset neonatal disease (EOD/LOD). In Greece, a screening-based strategy is recommended, in which concurrent vaginal-rectal cultures should be obtained between 36 0/7 and 37 6/7 weeks' gestation.

  • Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) can be derived from different sources, including pluripotent stem cells, and their properties need thorough investigation for potential clinical use.
  • This study compared the growth and cartilage-producing abilities of MSCs from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), embryonic stem cells (hESCs), and bone marrow (BM) samples.
  • Findings showed that while PSC-derived MSCs had significantly higher proliferation rates than BM-MSCs, they struggled to produce the desired type of cartilage (hyaline) compared to the BM-derived MSCs.

In Vivo

February 2021

Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Imperial College London, London, U.K.

Background: In Greece the population-level impact of HPV vaccination is unknown due to lack of official registries. This study presents in a pragmatic frame the comparison of cervical pathology data between HPV-vaccinated and unvaccinated women referred for colposcopy.

Patients And Methods: This is an observational prospective cohort study performed in 7 academic Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments across Greece between 2009-2019.

: Despite numerous advances in the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs), treatment in cases of wide-neck, complex configurations or branching locations remains challenging. Apart from the paradigm shift introduced by flow diverters, several other devices have seen the light or are under development in order to address these challenges.: We performed a review of the novel implantable endovascular devices which have been introduced for the treatment of IAs, from 1 January 2014 to 1 September 2019, excluding classic flow diverter and intracranial stent designs.

Cancer registries are essential in health care, since they allow more accurate planning of necessary health services and evaluation of programs for cancer prevention and control. The Hellenic Society of Pathology (HSP) having recognized the lack of such information in Greece has undertaken the task of a 5-year pathology-based cancer registry in Greece (2009-2013). In this study, > 95% of all pathology laboratories in the national health system hospitals and 100% of pathology laboratories in private hospitals, as well as > 80% of private pathology laboratories have contributed their data.

In a previous nationwide study in Greece, OXA-58 was the sole carbapenemase present among carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolated between 2000 and 2009. In this study, the antibiotic resistances, carbapenemase gene content and clonal relatedness of 194 single-patient CRAB clinical isolates collected randomly during 2015 from 11 tertiary hospitals located throughout Greece were investigated. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using commercial and dilution methods.

Choices of Stent and Cerebral Protection in the Ongoing ACST-2 Trial: A Descriptive Study.

Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg

May 2017

Department of Vascular Surgery, Policlinico di Monza, Via Amati 111, 20900 Monza, Italy.

Objective/background: Several plaque and lesion characteristics have been associated with an increased risk for procedural stroke during or shortly after carotid artery stenting (CAS). While technical advancements in stent design and cerebral protection devices (CPD) may help reduce the procedural stroke risk, and anatomy remains important, tailoring stenting procedures according to plaque and lesion characteristics might be a useful strategy in reducing stroke associated with CAS. In this descriptive report of the ongoing Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial-2 (ACST-2), it was assessed whether choice for stent and use or type of CPD was influenced by plaque and lesion characteristics.
