Article Synopsis
  • Fibrotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a liver condition that can lead to severe disease, and researchers explored the use of an exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) breath test to diagnose fibrotic MASH without needing blood tests.
  • In a study involving 147 patients, the eNO test demonstrated diagnostic capabilities similar to existing blood-based methods (FAST, Agile 3, and FIB-4 scores), showing an area under the curve around 0.737.
  • The eNO test provided high sensitivity and specificity thresholds for diagnosing fibrotic MASH, and combining it with liver stiffness measurement increased its diagnostic accuracy.

Background: In the worldwide, real-life setting, some candidates for right colectomy still receive no bowel preparation, some receive oral antibiotics alone, some receive mechanical bowel preparation alone, and some receive mechanical bowel preparation with oral antibiotics, with varying degrees of compliance to preoperative intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis. Previous studies mainly focused on left-sided colorectal anastomoses while less attention has been devoted to right-sided ileocolic anastomoses. When high-level evidence from randomized clinical trials is lacking, multiple-treatment propensity score weighting analysis of prospective data on the basis of generalized boosted model is superior to a simple propensity score-matching analysis and to an inverse probability weighting in terms of external validity and bias reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of switching to a less neurotoxic antiretroviral therapy (ARV) on neurocognitive performance in people living with HIV who have cognitive impairments.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to either continue their current treatment or switch to a less harmful ARV regimen (MARAND-X) for 24 weeks, with results measured using various cognitive tests and electroencephalography.
  • While the overall neurocognitive scores improved modestly, significant improvements were only seen in specific memory functions for those in the MARAND-X group with better CNS penetration, indicating that the effectiveness of ARVs in the central nervous system may influence cognitive health.

Human babesiosis is an emerging zoonotic disease; diffused especially in some regions of the United States, it has been less frequently observed in other continents, including Europe. Serological surveys suggest that babesiosis could be more frequent than expected in European countries, representing an emerging health-issue and a possible harm, especially in immunocompromised populations. Only one case of human babesiosis has been reported in Italy and data about the diffusion of the pathogen in this country are scant.

Article Synopsis
  • Ocular siderosis (OS) can cause significant visual loss due to ferrous intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB), and timely diagnosis is critical for preventing severe impairment; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a key role when other imaging fails.
  • A 51-year-old male experienced progressive vision loss in one eye, with initial imaging (CT and ultrasound) not revealing the IOFB, but MRI eventually identified it, leading to surgical intervention.
  • The successful treatment restored the patient's vision to 20/20, reinforcing the need for awareness of OS in cases of unexplained vision loss from prior ocular trauma, even when standard imaging is inconclusive.
