Unexpected death due to a biventricular thrombosis: Case report and review of literature.

Cardiac thrombosis is an unusual condition characterised by the formation of a clot in the heart chambers. Biventricular thrombosis with obstruction of blood flow and fatal cardiogenic shock is anecdotal. This report describes a rare biventricular thrombosis in an elderly woman without known risk factors which was diagnosed at autopsy.

Clinical characteristics, management and in-hospital mortality of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in Genoa, Italy.

Objectives: To describe clinical characteristics, management and outcome of individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); and to evaluate risk factors for all-cause in-hospital mortality.

Methods: This retrospective study from a University tertiary care hospital in northern Italy, included hospitalized adult patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 between 25 February 2020 and 25 March 2020.

Results: Overall, 317 individuals were enrolled.

Lesions of uncertain malignant potential of the breast (B3) on vacuum-assisted biopsy for microcalcifications: Predictors of malignancy.

Purpose: To investigate clinical, radiologic and pathologic features of B3 lesions diagnosed on VABB targeting microcalcifications, for identifying predictors of malignancy.

Method: This retrospective multi-centre study included consecutive VABBs performed over a 10-year period on suspicious microcalcifications not associated with other radiological signs diagnosed as B3 on histology from VABB, with outcomes ascertained by surgical excision. Clinical, demographic, radiological and histological (B3 subcategory) data were collected.

Background And Aims: In Italy, the clinical and genetic characteristics of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) have been extensively assessed in various lipid clinics, although no studies on long-term cardiovascular outcomes in heterozygous patients (He-FH) have been conducted. This study evaluated the incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in He-FH before and after a long-term period of lipid-lowering treatments to ascertain the interference of other risk factors.

Methods: A total of 294 genetically characterised He-FH subjects from 1989 to 2019 were retrospectively analysed.

Human Papilloma Virus Infection and Vaccination: Pre-Post Intervention Analysis on Knowledge, Attitudes and Willingness to Vaccinate Among Preadolescents Attending Secondary Schools of Palermo, Sicily.

In recent years, vaccination coverage rates against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in Europe have shown a decreasing trend and remain below the required standard. The present study aims to assess knowledge and attitudes regarding HPV infection and vaccination among a representative sample of preadolescents of Palermo, Italy. A survey was carried out throughout two questionnaires, before and after carrying out an educational intervention scheduled during school hours.

Spectrum of magnetic resonance imaging findings in transplanted multiple myeloma patients with hip/pelvic pain (according to MY-RADS): A single center experience.

Purpose: The aim of our study is to evaluate the spectrum of MRI findings in transplanted Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients with hip/pelvic pain and to correlate these findings with standard prognostic clinical outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective interpretation of the MRI findings of 54 MM patients with hip/pelvic pain were done according to MY-RADS guidelines. MRI findings included: type of bone marrow involvement and incidental findings (osteonecrosis and fractures).

Predictors of filing claims and receiving compensation in malignant mesothelioma patients.

Although the predominant occupation origin of mesothelioma is well known, determinant factors involved in filing compensation are scarcely investigated. A linkage between incident mesothelioma cases collected by Italian mesothelioma register (ReNaM) and compensation claims and assignment by Italian national insurance Institute (INAIL) has been conducted for cases diagnosed in the period 2010-2015 and occupational exposure to asbestos. Logistic regression models and decision tree models have been used to identify demographic, diagnostic and anamnestic factors significant for filing and receiving compensation.

Atypical polypoid adenomyoma follow-up and management: Systematic review of case reports and series and meta-analysis.

Background: Atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) is a rare uterine tumor typically found in fertile age and associated with infertility. Among young nullipara women, conservative treatment is proposed despite the high recurrence rate and the association with endometrial cancer.Our aim was to assess the risk of recurrence with different conservative treatments in fertile ages and the prevalence of malignant or pre-malignant associated lesions to better address an adequate patient counselling when treatment modalities are discussed.

Muscle mass loss after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer: estimation on breast magnetic resonance imaging using pectoralis muscle area.

Objectives: The loss of skeletal muscle mass is widely considered a predictor of poor survival and toxicity in breast cancer patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate if there is pectoralis muscle area (PMA) variation, reflecting loss of skeletal muscle mass, on consecutive MRI examinations after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Methods: The retrospective study protocol was approved by our institutional review board.

Cetuximab and Radiation Therapy Versus Cisplatin and Radiation Therapy for Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer: Long-Term Survival and Toxicity Outcomes of a Randomized Phase 2 Trial.

Purpose: This study describes the long-term survival and toxicity outcomes of a multicenter randomized phase 2 trial comparing radiation therapy (RT) plus cisplatin (CDDP) or cetuximab (CTX) as first line treatment in locally advanced head and neck cancer (LASCCHN).

Methods And Materials: Between January 2011 and August 2014, 70 patients were enrolled and randomized to receive RT plus weekly CDDP (40 mg/m) or CTX (250 mg/m plus a loading dose of 400 mg/m). This updated series focuses on late toxicities (graded by using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.

Here we used high-density electroencephalography coupled to source reconstruction to assess frequency-specific changes of FC during resting state. Specifically, we computed the Small-World Propensity (SWP) index to characterize network small-world architecture across frequencies.

Assessment of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Propensity towards HPV Vaccine of Young Adult Students in Italy.

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI), representing the main cause of genital warts and cervical cancer. This cross-sectional study evaluated knowledge and attitudes about HPV infection, related diseases, and prevention and propensity towards HPV vaccine among undergraduate students.

Methods: An online and written survey about HPV and its prevention, targeted to young adults of both genders, was addressed to students attending health sciences and other schools at Universities of Genoa and Bari.

Life after ruxolitinib: Reasons for discontinuation, impact of disease phase, and outcomes in 218 patients with myelofibrosis.

Background: After discontinuing ruxolitinib, the outcome of patients with myelofibrosis reportedly has been poor. The authors investigated whether disease characteristics before the receipt of ruxolitinib may predict drug discontinuation in patients with myelofibrosis and whether reasons for drug discontinuation, disease phase at discontinuation, and salvage therapies may influence the outcome.

Methods: A centralized electronic clinical database was created in 20 European hematology centers, including clinical and laboratory data for 524 patients who received ruxolitinib for myelofibrosis.

The pharmacotherapeutic management of obstructive sleep apnea.

: Obstructive sleep apneas are a frequent clinical condition in which there are momentary interruptions or reductions in breathing activity. To date, the gold standard therapy is the use of Continous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). But, due to the relatevely high frequency of poor compliant patients, there is the need to research possible pharmacological treatments for obstructive apnea (OSA).

Potential Mechanisms of Ovarian Protection with Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist in Breast Cancer Patients: A Review.

The use of chemotherapy in premenopausal cancer patients may lead to chemotherapy-induced premature ovarian failure. Pharmacological temporary ovarian suppression obtained with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) administered concomitantly with chemotherapy has been investigated as a technique capable to reduce the gonadotoxicity, reducing the risk of developing premature menopause. In recent years, important evidence has become available on the efficacy and safety of this strategy that should now be considered a standard option for ovarian function preservation in premenopausal breast cancer patients.

Reirradiation of pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma: A case report.

We report here the case of a patient with 4 years long-term survival after treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy with good local control. This case highlights the possible role of radiation therapy in this tumor.

Real-world efficacy and safety of lenvatinib: data from a compassionate use in the treatment of radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer patients in Italy.

Background: Lenvatinib is a multi-kinase inhibitor approved for patients with radioactive iodine (RAI)-resistant differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Before the drug approval from the Italian National Regulatory Agency, a compassionate use programme has been run in Italy. This retrospective study aimed to analyse data from the first series of patients treated with lenvatinib in Italy.

Background: We investigated low-dose aspirin (ASA) efficacy and safety in subjects with silent brain infarcts (SBIs) in preventing new cerebrovascular (CVD) events as well as cognitive impairment.

Methods: We included subjects aged ≥45 years, with at least one SBI and no previous CVD. Subjects were followed up to 4 years assessing CVD and SBI incidence as primary endpoint and as secondary endpoints: (a) cardiovascular and adverse events and (b) cognitive impairment.

Transvaginal sonography with vs without bowel preparation in diagnosis of rectosigmoid endometriosis: prospective study.

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of transvaginal sonography (TVS) with vs without bowel preparation (BP) in detecting the presence of rectosigmoid endometriosis. Secondary objectives were to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the two techniques in estimating infiltration of the submucosa, length of the largest rectosigmoid nodules, distance of the nodules from the anal verge and presence of multifocal disease.

Methods: This was a prospective study of patients with symptoms of pelvic pain for more than 6 months and/or suspicion of endometriosis referred to our institution between October 2016 and April 2018.
