Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated whether women with endometriosis have a stiffer internal cervical os (ICO), which is linked to menstrual pain, compared to those without the condition.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 287 women, finding that those with endometriosis had significantly lower elasticity scores for the ICO and other cervical regions, indicating stiffness.
  • - The results suggest a strong association between endometriosis and a stiffer ICO, even when considering other factors like myomas and hormonal therapy.

Repurposing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy grading.

Eur J Neurol

December 2024

Unit of Neuro-Oncology, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge-Institut Català Oncologia, Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Background And Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is perceived differently by patients and physicians, complicating its assessment. Current recommendations advocate combining clinical and patient-reported outcomes measures, but this approach can be challenging in patient care. This multicenter European study aims to bridge the gap between patients' perceptions and neurological impairments by aligning both perspectives to improve treatment decision-making.

Efficacy of autologous micrografts technology: a promising approach for chronic wound healing and tissue regeneration-a pilot study.

Front Med (Lausanne)

July 2024

Department of Plastic Surgeon Gynecological and Obstetrician, City of Health and Science of Turin, Turin, Italy.

Introduction: This study explores the efficacy of Autologous Micrografts Technology (AMG) in treating chronic wounds refractory to traditional therapies.

Methods: AMGs, derived from adipose tissue or dermis using a mechanical fragmentation process, were applied to patients with post-surgical dehiscence. A comprehensive evaluation of wound healing outcomes, including surface area reduction and complete healing, was conducted over a 90-day follow-up period.

Introduction: The demand for effective and safe treatments of genitourinary syndrome (GSM) in post-menopausal women (PMW) is growing. Published data on the efficacy and safety of ospemifene (OSP) prompt an updated literature review to enlighten possible improvements in the GSM treatment.

Area Covered: We searched articles published in English from 2010 to 2023 through Medline (PubMed) and Embase databases with Boolean terms: OSP, PMW, GSM, endometrium, breast cancer, cardiometabolic syndrome, bone metabolism, adherence to treatment, and patient satisfaction.

Purpose: Although prescription of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for epileptic patients on anti-seizure medications (ASMs) is on the increase, international guidelines pose strict restrictions because this may lead to pharmacologic interactions. However, current evidence on their clinical relevance remains scanty. This retrospective, case-control study assessed the frequency of ischemic/hemorrhagic events and epileptic seizures involving DOAC-ASM cotherapy in the real world, compared with DOAC and ASM monotherapy, in age- and gender-matched controls.

Choice of calcineurin inhibitor may impact the outcome of patients undergoing T-cell replete hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PT-Cy) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) for prophylaxis of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). We retrospectively analyzed 2427 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first remission transplanted from a haploidentical (n = 1844) or unrelated donor (UD, n = 583) using cyclosporine A (CSA, 63%) or tacrolimus (TAC, 37%) and PT-Cy/MMF. In univariate analysis, CSA and TAC groups did not differ in 2-year leukemia-free or overall survival, cumulative incidence (CI) of relapse or non-relapse mortality.

To date, no reports have indicated laparoscopic lymph node biopsies using Indocyanine green (ICG) in cases of lymphoproliferative disease. Preliminary data of patients undergoing fluorescence-guided laparoscopic lymph node biopsy (FGLLB) using ICG was retrospectively analysed from the multicentre registry FLABILY study. Between June 2022 and February 2024, 50 patients underwent FGLLB.

Venetoclax-azacitidine is approved for treatment of patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for intensive chemotherapy based on the interim overall survival (OS) analysis of the VIALE-A study (NCT02993523). Here, long-term follow-up is presented to address survival benefit and long-term outcomes with venetoclax-azacitidine. Patients with newly diagnosed AML who were ineligible for intensive chemotherapy were randomized 2:1 to receive venetoclax-azacitidine or placebo-azacitidine.

Palmoplantar (PP) psoriasis is considered one of the most hard-to-treat areas with important impact on patients' quality of life, and few data are available about the efficacy of dimethylfumarate (DMF) on these areas. In our noninterventional multicentre retrospective cohort study of patients with PP psoriasis treated with DMF, effectiveness was evaluated as mean pp Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (ppPASI) reduction and as proportion of patients that reach ppPASI 75 at 4, 12, 24 and 48 weeks. The reduction in ppPASI was 23.

  • VEXAS is a unique disease that combines symptoms of rheumatologic and hematologic disorders, and this study aimed to better understand its diagnosis and genetic features while tracking changes over time with different treatments.
  • Researchers gathered data from various centers in Italy, finding that 41 male patients had significant mutations in the UBA1 gene, mostly diagnosed around age 67, all presenting with anemia and common rheumatologic issues like polychondritis.
  • A high percentage of these patients also had myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), showcasing diverse genetic mutations, and the study noted that after treatment like hematopoietic cell transplants, some mutations were cleared.

Background: Balance impairments are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), with reduced ability to maintain position and delayed responses to postural adjustments. Pilates is a popular alternative method for balance training that may reduce the rapid worsening of symptoms and the increased risk of secondary conditions (eg, depression) that are frequently associated with physical inactivity.

Objective: In this paper, we aimed to describe the design, development, and usability testing of MS Fitness Intervention Training (MS-FIT), a Kinect-based tool implementing Pilates exercises customized for MS.

Objective: Ictal central apnea (ICA) is a frequent correlate of focal seizures, particularly in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and regarded as a potential electroclinical biomarker of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Aims of this study are to investigate morphometric changes of subcortical structures in ICA patients and to find neuroimaging biomarkers of ICA in patients with focal epilepsy.

Methods: We prospectively recruited focal epilepsy patients with recorded seizures during a video-EEG long-term monitoring with cardiorespiratory polygraphic recordings from April 2020 to September 2022.

What is the best treatment strategy before autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in POEMS syndrome?

Haematologica

March 2024

Dipartimento di Diagnostica per Immagini, Radioterapia Oncologica ed Ematologia, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "A. Gemelli" IRCCS, Roma; Sezione di Ematologia, Dipartimento di Scienze Radiologiche ed Ematologiche, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (aPBSCT) provides optimal outcomes in POEMS syndrome but the definition of the best treatment before aPBSCT remains to be defined because of the rarity of the disease and the heterogeneity of published case series. We collected clinical and laboratory data of patients with POEMS syndrome undergoing aPBSCT from 1998 to 2020 in ten Italian centers. The primary endpoint of the study was to evaluate the impact of prior therapies and mobilization regimen on outcome.
