Are Strategies Favoring Pattern Matching a Viable Way to Improve Complexity Estimation Based on Sample Entropy?

It has been suggested that a viable strategy to improve complexity estimation based on the assessment of pattern similarity is to increase the pattern matching rate without enlarging the series length. We tested this hypothesis over short simulations of nonlinear deterministic and linear stochastic dynamics affected by various noise amounts. Several transformations featuring a different ability to increase the pattern matching rate were tested and compared to the usual strategy adopted in sample entropy (SampEn) computation.

Complications of mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke: Incidence, risk factors, and clinical relevance in the Italian Registry of Endovascular Treatment in acute stroke.

Background: There are limited data concerning procedure-related complications of endovascular thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion strokes.

Aims: We evaluated the cumulative incidence, the clinical relevance in terms of increased disability and mortality, and risk factors for complications.

Methods: From January 2011 to December 2017, 4799 patients were enrolled by 36 centers in the Italian Registry of Endovascular Stroke Treatment.

In vivo Perturb-Seq reveals neuronal and glial abnormalities associated with autism risk genes.

The number of disease risk genes and loci identified through human genetic studies far outstrips the capacity to systematically study their functions. We applied a scalable genetic screening approach, in vivo Perturb-Seq, to functionally evaluate 35 autism spectrum disorder/neurodevelopmental delay (ASD/ND) de novo loss-of-function risk genes. Using CRISPR-Cas9, we introduced frameshift mutations in these risk genes in pools, within the developing mouse brain in utero, followed by single-cell RNA-sequencing of perturbed cells in the postnatal brain.

Device entrapment during percutaneous coronary intervention of chronic total occlusions: incidence and management strategies.

Background: Equipment delivery in chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can be challenging and it is associated with a higher risk of device entrapment. Data regarding the incidence of device entrapment during CTO PCI are lacking.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe the incidence and procedural characteristics of device entrapment in patients undergoing PCI for CTOs and discuss management strategies for dealing with it.

An international multicenter efficacy and safety study of IqYmune in initial and maintenance treatment of patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: PRISM study.

This prospective, multicenter, single-arm, open-label phase 3 study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IqYmune in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). Patients received one induction dose of 2 g/kg and then seven maintenance doses of 1 g/kg at 3-week intervals. The primary endpoint was the responder rate at the end of study (EOS), defined as an improvement of ≥1 point on the adjusted inflammatory neuropathy cause and treatment (INCAT) disability scale.

The soluble glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB) produced by macrophages induces cancer stemness and metastasis via CD44 and IL-33.

In cancer, myeloid cells have tumor-supporting roles. We reported that the protein GPNMB (glycoprotein nonmetastatic B) was profoundly upregulated in macrophages interacting with tumor cells. Here, using mouse tumor models, we show that macrophage-derived soluble GPNMB increases tumor growth and metastasis in Gpnmb-mutant mice (DBA/2J).

Myxoid Liposarcoma Metastasizing to the Parotid Gland.

Localization of metastases into the parotid gland is a very uncommon event. Usually they arise from primary tumors located in the head and neck, mainly melanoma or epidermoid carcinoma of the skin, while other histotypes, from others anatomical districts, hardly have a metastatic spread to the parotid. Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) is a rare malignant tumor of the soft tissue that mainly occurs in the extremities, representing the second most common subtype of liposarcoma.

High definition three-dimensional exoscope (VITOM 3D) for microsurgery training: a preliminary experience.

Purpose: To assess the feasibility of a high definition 3D exoscope (VITOM) for microsurgery training in a cohort of naïve medical students.

Methods: Twenty-two consecutive medical students performed a battery of four exercises assessing basic microsurgical skills. The students were randomized in two different groups based on two different VITOM holding systems (VERSACRANE™ and ARTip™ cruise).

Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery in the Management of a Supraglottic Solitary Fibrous Tumor.

Trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) has become increasingly widespread for the head and neck surgery procedures. In this paper, the authors describe the first reported TORS in the management of a laryngeal solitary fibrous tumor (SFT). A 77-year-old woman suffered from progressive dysphonia lasting 2 years and occasional dyspnea.

PD-1 Blockade in Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma.

Purpose: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is an aggressive malignancy that is almost always fatal and lacks effective systemic treatment options for patients with -wild type disease. As part of a phase I/II study in patients with advanced/metastatic solid tumors, patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma were treated with spartalizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against the programmed death-1 (PD-1) receptor.

Native/citrullinated LL37-specific T-cells help autoantibody production in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

LL37 exerts a dual pathogenic role in psoriasis. Bound to self-DNA/RNA, LL37 licenses autoreactivity by stimulating plasmacytoid dendritic cells-(pDCs)-Type I interferon (IFN-I) and acts as autoantigen for pathogenic Th17-cells. In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), LL37 also triggers IFN-I in pDCs and is target of pathogenic autoantibodies.

Lateral cervical approach for salvage total laryngectomy without pharyngeal reinforcement with pedicled or free flaps: our preliminary experience in six patients.

Purpose: To analyze the surgical outcomes in terms of postoperative wound complications in a small case series of six patients treated with lateral cervical approach (LCA) for salvage total laryngectomy (STL) without prophylactic use of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) or free flaps.

Methods: Between September 2018 and August 2019, six patients with recurrent/residual squamous-cell carcinoma after (chemo)radiotherapy [(C)RT] underwent STL with minimally invasive LCA with the anterior myocutaneous flap (AMCF), sparing the prelaryngeal tissue. Clinical records were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Medication adherence is a determinant of therapeutic outcomes in osteoporotic patients treated with bisphosphonates. In this monocentric study, we evaluated whether the regular drug administration may influence the effectiveness of denosumab in preventing vertebral fractures (VFs) in real-world clinical practice.

Methods: Two-hundred and four women (median age 75 years, range: 54-90 years) under treatment with denosumab for post-menopausal osteoporosis were longitudinally evaluated for incident radiological VFs and changes in lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) in relationship with medication adherence.

Background: The anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α adalimumab is the only licenced biologic for moderate-to-severe hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). No predictors of response have been identified so far.
