Lung cancer, of which non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents about 80% of all cases, is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the general population and one of the major causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Overall, the outcomes of patients with advanced NSCLC are still disappointing despite advances in diagnosis and treatment. In recent years immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), administered alone or in combination with chemotherapy, have revolutionized the treatment landscape of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.

In addition to being novel biomarkers for poor cancer prognosis, members of Lymphocyte antigen-6 (Ly6) gene family also play a crucial role in avoiding immune responses to tumors. However, it has not been possible to identify the underlying mechanism of how Ly6 gene regulation operates in human cancers. Transcriptome, epigenome and proteomic data from independent cancer databases were analyzed in silico and validated independently in 334 colorectal cancer tissues (CRC).

Background: The metabolic phenotype of stem cells is increasingly recognized as a hallmark of their pluripotency with mitochondrial and oxygen-related metabolism playing a not completely defined role in this context. In a previous study, we reported the ectopic expression of myoglobin (MB) in bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. Here, we have extended the analysis to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from different tissues.

Non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) indicates a condition characterized by the progression of the prostate-specific antigen without radiographic evidence of distant metastasis on conventional imaging during androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Recently, 3 phase III trials have shown that the addition of next-generation androgen-receptor inhibitors (ARIs) apalutamide, darolutamide, and enzalutamide to ADT allows patients with high-risk nmCRPC to delay the appearance of metastasis and to obtain long-term clinical benefits. However, the lack of head-to head comparison makes it difficult to choose one among these agents.

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 6 (IGFBP6) is a secreted protein with a controversial role in human malignancies, being downregulated in most types of human cancer, but upregulated in selected tumors. Ovarian cancer (OC) is a human malignancy characterized by IGFBP6 downregulation; however, the significance of its low expression during ovarian carcinogenesis is still poorly understood. In the present study, IGFBP6 expression and activation of its associated signaling pathway were evaluated in two matched OC cell lines derived from a high-grade serous OC before and after platinum resistance (PEA1 and PEA2 cells, respectively).

Oligoprogression is an emerging concept in oncology representing a state where after an initially successfully local or systemic treatment a disease progression occurs characterized by the appearance of a single or few new lesions. We reviewed the literature and explained the rationale of the therapeutic choices by referring to the current guidelines and literature data. In any case, the treatment of oligometastatic disease should be tailored to suit the individual patient with the aim of maximizing the benefit of each line of therapy.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a group of disease entities sharing common morphological, ultrastructural and immunophenotypical features, yet with distinct biological behavior and clinical outcome, ranging from benign to frankly malignant. Accordingly, a spectrum of therapeutic options for each single entity is available, including somatostatin analogues (SSA), mTOR-inhibitors, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), non-platinum and platinum chemotherapy. In the last few decades, several attempts have been made to better stratify these lesions refining the pathological classifications, so as to obtain an optimal correspondence between the scientific terminology and, the predictive and prognostic features of each disease subtype, and achieve a global Classification encompassing NENs arising at different anatomical sites.

Defining the metabolic phenotypes of cancer-initiating cells or cancer stem cells and of their differentiated counterparts might provide fundamental knowledge for improving or developing more effective therapies. In this context we extensively characterized the metabolic profiles of two osteosarcoma-derived cell lines, the 3AB-OS cancer stem cells and the parental MG-63 cells. To this aim Seahorse methodology-based metabolic flux analysis under a variety of conditions complemented with real time monitoring of cell growth by impedentiometric technique and confocal imaging were carried out.

High rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have been found among patients with more severe COVID-19-related symptoms, and hospitalization is generally recognized as a risk factor for developing PTSD. Furthermore, other personality characteristics may increase the risk of developing post-traumatic stress symptoms following a COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to assess personality traits, alexithymia, dissociation, anxiety, and depression in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 and the impact of these variables on the presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Gastric cancer (GC) is characterized by poor efficacy and modest clinical impact of current therapies, in which apoptosis evasion is relevant. Intracellular calcium homeostasis dysregulation is associated with apoptosis escaping, and aberrant expression of calcium regulator genes could promote GC drug resistance. Since we previously found a prognostic value for TRPV2 calcium channel expression in GC, we aimed to characterize the role of TRPV2 in cisplatin resistance.
