Mentally ill offenders constitute a vulnerable population group with unique characteristics, and have endured multiple public stigmatizations, which has not been sufficiently studied. The purpose of this study was to capture attitudes of the public toward mentally ill offenders in relation to their perceptions of mental illness in general, as well as their degree of familiarity with it. Alport syndrome (AS) is a hereditary progressive glomerular disease associated with sensorineural hearing loss and ocular abnormalities. It is attributed to the altered structure and the subsequent dysfunction of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) due to the mutated type IV collagen a3/a4/a5 chains. It may emerge either as an X-linked disease, the most common, or as an autosomal disease, both recessive and dominant.

Our objective was to quantify the alterations in the volume of screening tests for breast and cervical cancer during the COVID-19 era compared to pre-pandemic levels. Secondarily, we discussed the causes responsible for this change, presented suggestions for screening optimization and conducted a targeted search of the relevant literature for worsening of future mortality due to screening setback.

Aims: Insulin administration is the treatment of choice for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Technological advances have led to the development of automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, aiming to optimize the quality of life of patients with T1D. We present a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature about the efficacy of AID systems in children and adolescents with T1D.

The implementation of guideline recommendations for antibiotics prescription for the management of patients with acute infective conjunctivitis (AIC) in primary care departments remains below par. Our objective was to assess the impact of clinical audit on adherence to evidence-based indications for prescription of antibiotic eye drops in patients diagnosed with AIC, in the setting of a primary care practice in western Greece. We conducted a retrospective audit to evaluate the current prescription practice of antibiotics for the management of AIC.

Background: From a variety of ring types, semirigid ring is more preferred for mitral annuloplasty during mitral valve repair particularly in patients whose native mitral saddle shape annulus is well maintained. During mitral annuloplasty artificial chord implantation with the appropriate neochord length is surgically challenging. We present our experience of using the Memo 3D ReChord, a semirigid ring with additional chordal guiding system for mitral valve repair.

Protein arginine methylation is an extensive and functionally significant post-translational modification. However, little is known about its role in differentiation at the systems level. Using stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) proteomics of whole proteome analysis in proliferating or five-day differentiated mouse C2C12 myoblasts, followed by high-resolution mass spectrometry, biochemical assays, and specific immunoprecipitation of mono- or dimethylated arginine peptides, we identified several protein families that were differentially methylated on arginine.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) shares several risk factors with atherosclerosis, as it is associated with components of the metabolic syndrome. However, genetic variations have also been linked to the risk of NAFLD, such as adiponutrin/patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing the protein 3 (PNPLA3) rs738409 polymorphism. The aim of the study was to determine the associations of thePNPLA3 rs738409 polymorphism with NAFLD and atherosclerosis risk factors in children and adolescents from northern Greece.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men. Diagnosis and risk assessment are widely based on serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and biopsy, which might not represent the exact degree of PCa risk. Towards the discovery of biomarkers for better patient stratification, we performed proteomic analysis of Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) prostate tissue specimens using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) represents the most common pediatric cancer accounting for about one-third of all malignancies in childhood. The differential diagnosis for a pediatric patient manifesting with joint pain and refusal to bear weight is wide and includes trauma, transient synovitis, septic arthritis, rheumatologic disorders, and malignancy. Overt complaints from the musculoskeletal system as the initial manifestation of ALL may present in up to 30% of cases with normal laboratory tests and without hepatosplenomegaly or lymphadenopathy, perplexing the establishment of a definite diagnosis.

The clinical presentation of congenital abnormalities in adult life is a rare condition since they usually make their appearance in early childhood. A combination of two different congenital deformities is even more infrequent, a fact that might complicate the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen. This is a case report of an inflamed Meckel's diverticulum in a 16-year-old male with intestinal malrotation presented in an acute setting, and a review of the literature.

Thromboprophylaxis, as a preventive measure for cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT), may be beneficial for patients with active cancer and high-risk for thrombosis. The present post hoc analysis include a total of 407 patients enrolled in the Greek Management of Thrombosis study, who received thromboprophylaxis with tinzaparin. The objectives of the present analysis were: i) To obtain sufficient evidence for the administration of prophylaxis in patients with active cancer, irrespective of Khorana risk assessment model score; ii) to identify the selection criteria for both dose and duration of tinzaparin; and iii) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tinzaparin administered for CAT prophylaxis.
