Irreversible electroporation is a promising non-thermal ablation method that has been shown to increase overall survival in locally advanced pancreatic cancer in some studies. However, higher quality studies with proper controls and randomization are required to establish its superiority when added with neoadjuvant chemotherapy over the current management of choice, which is chemotherapy alone. Further studies are required before establishment of any survival benefit in metastatic pancreatic carcinoma, and such evidence is lacking at present.

Introduction: Assessing the body composition is important in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to prevent and achieve optimum control during treatment. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), being a more affordable method of assessing the body composition, should therefore be compared with the gold standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to look for a correlation between the two and the potential of BIA to be used widely in this population. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 60 patients attending the endocrinology outpatient department (OPD) of a tertiary care centre in Kolkata, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL) emerges as a complication of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), posing challenges for disease management and ongoing elimination efforts due to its potential for ongoing transmission.
  • In this study, researchers assessed neutrophils in PKDL patients' skin biopsies, finding increased numbers of activated neutrophils and elevated levels of inflammatory markers compared to healthy controls.
  • The findings suggest that activated neutrophils may significantly influence the inflammatory environment in PKDL, highlighting the need for further understanding of their role in the disease's progression and treatment.

CD36 inhibition corrects lipid-FetuinA mediated insulin secretory defects by preventing intracellular lipid accumulation and inflammation in the pancreatic beta cells.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

February 2025

Cell Signaling Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Siksha Bhavana (Institute of Science), Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan 731235, India. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • CD36 is a protein that helps with fat uptake and immune response, and it's found to be more active in the pancreatic islets of obese diabetic people, which can lead to issues with insulin secretion.
  • The study found that when beta cells were exposed to a combination of palmitate (a fatty acid) and fetuinA (a protein linked to inflammation), it triggered an inflammatory response that worsened lipid buildup and insulin secretion problems.
  • Inhibiting CD36 or the inflammatory receptor TLR4 helped reduce this lipid accumulation and restored insulin secretion in beta cells, indicating that targeting CD36 could be a potential treatment for obesity-related beta cell dysfunction.

Background: Detection of cancer at the early stage currently offers the only viable strategy for reducing disease-related morbidity and mortality. Various approaches for multi-cancer early detection are being explored, which largely rely on capturing signals from circulating analytes shed by tumors into the blood. The fact that biomarker concentrations are limiting in the early stages of cancer, however, compromises the accuracy of these tests.

Torsemide in the Management of Pulmonary Edema.

J Assoc Physicians India

September 2024

Country Head, Medical Affairs, Cipla Ltd., Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pulmonary edema occurs when fluid builds up in the lungs' alveoli, and can be classified as either cardiogenic (related to heart issues) or noncardiogenic (not related to heart problems).
  • - Cardiogenic pulmonary edema is often linked to congestive heart failure (CHF) and is typically treated with loop diuretics, with torsemide and furosemide being effective options due to their ability to reduce heart pressure levels.
  • - Torsemide may be preferable over furosemide because it has better absorption and efficacy, showing good results when given intravenously for cardiogenic pulmonary edema, but further studies are necessary to evaluate its effectiveness in non-cardiogenic cases.
