Electronic address:

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumour in children and adolescents and advanced osteosarcoma patients with evidence of metastasis share a poor prognosis. Osteosarcoma frequently gains resistance to standard therapies highlighting the need for improved treatment regimens and identification of novel therapeutic targets. Cancer stem cells (CSC) represent a sub-type of tumour cells attributed to critical steps in cancer including tumour propagation, therapy resistance, recurrence and in some cases metastasis.

The vast majority of cancer deaths are caused by the formation of metastases rather than the primary tumor itself. Despite this clinical importance, the molecular and cellular events that support the dissemination of cancer cells are not yet fully unraveled. We have previously shown that CDX2, a homeotic transcription factor essential for gut development, acts as a colon-specific tumor suppressor and opposes metastasis.

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection is a leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis B virus encodes the regulatory HBx protein whose primary role is to promote transcription of the viral genome, which persists as an extrachromosomal DNA circle in infected cells. HBx accomplishes this task by an unusual mechanism, enhancing transcription only from extrachromosomal DNA templates.

*Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Paediatrics, Lille University Jeanne de Flandre Children's Hospital †Biostatistics Unit, Lille University Hospital, EA 2694 ‡Department of Public Health, Epidemiology and Economic Health, Epimad Registry, Lille University Hospital, University of Lille §Lille Inflammation Research International Centre LIRIC UMR 995, University of Lille, Inserm, CHU Lille, Lille, France.

Objectives: The respective role of disease activity and steroid therapy in growth impairment in paediatric-onset Crohn disease (CD) is still debated. Our aim was to investigate whether the growth pattern of children with CD was correlated with the inflammatory status during the disease course, regardless the cumulative duration of steroid therapy.

Methods: One hundred and seven patients with a diagnosis of CD <17 years, followed during ≥2 years and for whom ≥2 height measures were available during follow-up, were identified between 1998 and 2010.

Biogenesis of the immune synapse at the interface between antigen-presenting cells and T cells assembles and organizes a large number of membrane proteins required for effective signaling through the T-cell receptor. We showed previously that the intraflagellar transport protein 20 (IFT20), a component of the intraflagellar transport system, controls polarized traffic during immune synapse assembly. To investigate the role of IFT20 in primary CD4(+) T cells in vitro and in vivo, we generated mice bearing a conditional defect of IFT20 expression in T cells.

Background: Intravascular-catheter-related infections are frequent life-threatening events in health care, but incidence can be decreased by improvements in the quality of care. Optimisation of skin antisepsis is essential to prevent short-term catheter-related infections. We hypothesised that chlorhexidine-alcohol would be more effective than povidone iodine-alcohol as a skin antiseptic to prevent intravascular-catheter-related infections.

Department of Biophysics, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Federal University of São Paulo, São Paulo/SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Phosphorylated kininogen and some of its fragments containing serine phosphorylated bradykinin ([pS(6)]-Bk) were identified in human serum and plasma by a phosphoproteomic approach. We report the kininogenase ability of human tissue and plasma kallikreins and tryptase to generate [pS(6)]-Bk or Lys-[pS(6)]-Bk having as substrate the synthetic human kininogen fluorescent fragment Abz-MISLMKRPPGF[pS(386)]PFRSSRI-NH2. The pharmacological assays of [pS(6)]-Bk showed it as a full B2 bradykinin receptor agonist in smooth muscle, it produces a portal liver hypertensive response in rat and mouse paw edema that lasts longer than Bk.

Platelet-mediated thrombosis is a major pathophysiological mechanism that underlies acute coronary syndromes, and therefore, antiplatelet therapy is an important foundation in the treatment and prevention of recurrence of these syndromes. Nearly 30 years ago, aspirin was the first agent to show a benefit for acute coronary syndromes and is still a key therapeutic agent. The landmark CURE trial showed that the addition of a P2Y12 antagonist, clopidogrel, to aspirin was beneficial in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes.

Background: Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are rare and heterogeneous diseases with dismal outcome when treated with chemotherapy alone. Because allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (allo-SCT) can cure relapse/refractory patients, we hypothesized that upfront allo-SCT may provide a better outcome. Therefore, all patients that presented with advanced PTCL in our institution at diagnosis were scheduled to undergo upfront allo-SCT after induction chemotherapy.
