Immunosenescence contributes to reduced vaccine response in elderly persons, and is worsened by deficiencies in nutrients such as Vitamin (Vit-D). The immune system is a well-known target of Vit-D, which can both potentiate the innate immune response and inhibit the adaptive system, and so modulate vaccination response. This randomized placebo-controlled double-blind trial investigated whether Vit-D supplementation in deficient elderly persons could improve influenza seroprotection and immune response.

'Plasticity of Central Nervous System, Stem Cells and Glial Tumours' group, INSERM U1051, Institute for Neurosciences of Montpellier, F-34295 Montpellier, France.

Negative motor responses (NMRs) are defined as movement arrests induced by direct electrical stimulation of the brain. The NMRs manifest themselves after the disruption of a corticosubcortical network involved in motor control, referred to as the 'negative motor network'. At present, the spatial topography of the negative motor areas (NMAs) is poorly known.

Since last decade real-time qPCR has become a routine and robust approach for measuring the expression of genes of interest. Indeed, using qPCR, expression profile analyses are now possible and participate to the understanding of physiological or pathological role of channels such as calcium release-activated channels (CRAC). Initially discovered in lymphocyte T and immunity perturbations, recent studies have highlighted the role of CRAC channels in other pathologies such as cancer.

Filamin A Modulates Store-Operated Ca Entry by Regulating STIM1 (Stromal Interaction Molecule 1)-Orai1 Association in Human Platelets.

Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol

February 2018

From the Department of Physiology, University of Extremadura, Cáceres, Spain (J.J.L., L.A., I.J., J.S.-C., P.C.R., J.A.R.); Department of Hematology, Hospital San Pedro de Alcantara, Cáceres, Spain (N.B.); INSERM Unité Mixte de Recherche-Santé 1176, Université Paris-Sud, Université Paris-Saclay, Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, France (R.B.); and Department of Medical Physiology and Biophysics, Institute of Biomedicine of Seville, University of Seville, Spain (T.S.).

Objective: Here, we provide evidence for the role of FLNA (filamin A) in the modulation of store-operated calcium entry (SOCE).

Approach And Results: SOCE is a major mechanism for calcium influx controlled by the intracellular Ca stores. On store depletion, the endoplasmic reticulum calcium sensor STIM1 (stromal interaction molecule 1) redistributes into puncta at endoplasmic reticulum/plasma membrane junctions, a process supported by the cytoskeleton, where it interacts with the calcium channels; however, the mechanism for fine-tuning SOCE is not completely understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Many clinical features of lung cancer differ between women and men, with sex steroid hormones influencing non-reproductive organs like the lungs.
  • A pooled analysis of eight studies found that peri/postmenopausal women have a higher risk of lung cancer compared to premenopausal women, while premenopausal women's risk is associated with factors like parity and breastfeeding.
  • Despite these findings, smoking remains the primary modifiable risk factor, and further research is needed to understand the gender differences in lung cancer risk and the underlying mechanisms.
