A cardiac lesion detected at ultrasonography might turn out to be a normal structure, a benign tumor or rarely a malignancy, and lesion characterization is very important to appropriately manage the lesion itself. The exact relationship of the mass with coronary arteries and the knowledge of possible concomitant coronary artery disease are necessary preoperative information. Moreover, the increasingly performed coronary CT angiography to evaluate non-invasively coronary artery disease leads to a rising number of incidental findings.

Methods: We analyzed echocardiography laboratory activities over a month (November 2022). Data were retrieved via an electronic survey based on a structured questionnaire, uploaded on the SIECVI website.

Purpose: False penile fractures (FPF) represent a rare sexual emergency characterized by blunt trauma of penis in the absence of albuginea's injury, with or without lesion of dorsal penile vein. Their presentation is often indistinguishable from true penile fractures (TPF). This overlapping of clinical presentation, and lack of knowledge about FPF, can lead surgeons often to proceed directly to surgical exploration without further examinations.

Objectives: To validate in a multicentric cohort of patients a self-administered PsA screening tool, called Simple Psoriatic Arthritis Screening (SiPAS) questionnaire, to screen psoriasis patients for signs and symptoms of PsA.
Methods: The SiPAS questionnaire was validated in a multicentric Italian cohort of psoriasis patients referred to two rheumatological centres.
Results: A total of 202 psoriasis patients were screened with SiPAS in the validation study.

A case of a double inferior vena cava (IVC) with retroaortic left renal vein, azygos continuation of the IVC, and presence of the hepatic portion of the IVC drained into the right renal vein is reported and the embryologic, clinical, and radiological significance is discussed. The diagnosis is suggested by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), which reveals the aberrant vascular structures. Awareness of different congenital anomalies of IVC is necessary for radiologists to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and they should be remembered because they can influence several surgical interventions and endovascular procedures.

Aim: To better define the efficacy and the safety of intra-arterial infusion performed with or without hemofiltration for recurrent limb melanoma.
Methods: Patients with the following characteristics were included in the study: recurrent limb melanoma not indicated for surgical resection, measurable disease in the extremity, > 18 years, performances status (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group ) was 0-1 and life expectancy of at least 6 mo. Twenty nine consecutive patients were enrolled in the study.

Strawberries are an important fruit in the Mediterranean diet because of their high content of essential nutrients and beneficial phytochemicals, which seem to exert beneficial effects in human health. Healthy volunteers were supplemented daily with 500 g of strawberries for 1 month. Plasma lipid profile, circulating and cellular markers of antioxidant status, oxidative stress and platelet function were evaluated at baseline, after 30 days of strawberry consumption and 15 days after the end of the study.

Significant increases in the plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC) have already been reported after acute intake of strawberries. In addition, antihaemolitic effects of strawberry extracts have been recently demonstrated in vitro, revealing that part of the antioxidant properties of strawberry bioactive compounds could lie in their localisation within cell membranes. However, there is a lack of research evidence from in vivo protracted strawberry consumption studies.

Background And Aims: C-reactive protein (CRP) has been identified as a possible factor able to promote atherosclerosis. "In vitro" studies have demonstrated that CRP induces plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) expression, suggesting a hypofibrinolytic role for CRP. As CRP and PAI-1 levels increase in type 2 diabetic subjects, we decided to study the relationship between CRP and PAI-1, and the role of the 4G/5G polymorphism of the PAI-1 gene on this relationship in a diabetic population without complications.

The aim of the present work was to analyze the effect of LDL obtained from type 1 diabetic patients in good metabolic control on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) after a short incubation period to detect possible atherogenic modifications of endothelial properties. Cultured HUVECs were incubated for 3 h with culture medium alone (control HUVEC), with native LDL from 12 healthy men (control LDL), or with native LDL from 12 type 1 diabetic men (type 1 LDL) (100 pg/ml). After the incubation, the following parameters were evaluated: nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels, Na+-K+-ATPase activity, plasma membrane fluidity determined by means of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) and 1-(4-trimethylaminophenyl)-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (TMA-DPH), and plasma membrane conjugated diene (CD) content.

In the present work we studied in vitro the action of low density lipoproteins (LDL) isolated from normolipemic insulin-dependent diabetic (IDDM) patients on transmembrane cation transport, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, and aggregating response to stimuli of platelets from healthy subjects to elucidate whether the modified interaction between circulating lipoproteins and cells might be one of the pathogenetic mechanisms of the increased platelet activation in IDDM. LDL were obtained by discontinuous gradient ultracentrifugation from 15 IDDM out-patients and 15 sex- and age-matched healthy subjects and used for incubation experiments with control platelets. Lipid composition and hydroperoxide concentrations were studied in LDL.

Nitric oxide (NO) produced by platelet nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibits platelet activation by increased cytoplasmic cGMP levels. The aim of this study was to investigate platelet NOS activity in insulin-dependent (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), which are characterized by enhanced platelet activation. HbA1c levels, platelet NOS and platelet membrane Na+/K+ ATPase activity were determined in 19 IDDM patients, 21 NIDDM patients and 31 healthy control subjects.

1. Na+,K(+)-ATPase is the membrane enzyme catalysing the active transport of Na+ and K+ across the plasma membrane of animal cells. A reduced activity of Na+,K(+)-ATPase has been described in gestational hypertension in a variety of cell types, in agreement with the hypothesis that gestational hypertension can induce membrane transport modifications similar to those reported for essential hypertension.

Plasma membrane lipid dynamics and cellular morphology were evaluated in endothelial cells obtained from umbilical cords of five women affected by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and six healthy pregnant women of similar age and gestational age. Endothelial cells were prepared by an adaptation of the method of Jaffe et al. Membrane fluidity was studied by means of the steady-state fluorescence anisotropy (r) of 1-(4-trimethylaminophenyl)-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (TMA-DPH), a fluorescent probe specifically anchoring at the membrane surface.

A fraction from normal human plasma inhibiting Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase has been recently identified as lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of a relationship between the activity of the cellular membrane Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase and plasma LPC in human diabetes.
