Introduction: The radiological study of the sagittal alignment of the spine in static and dynamic positions has allowed a better understanding of the clinical results of total hip prostheses. According to the Roussouly classification, the sacral slope in a standing position characterizes the patient with a stiff spine (less than 35̊) or a flexible spine (greater than 35̊). The objectives of this study were to compare, in a population of patients operated on for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), firstly, the kinematics of the lumbar-pelvic-femoral complex and secondly, the clinical presentation depending on whether the spine is stiff or flexible.

An Update of Evidence for Pathogen Transmission by Ticks of the Genus Hyalomma.

Pathogens

March 2023

Current and likely future changes in the geographic distribution of ticks belonging to the genus are of concern, as these ticks are believed to be vectors of many pathogens responsible for human and animal diseases. However, we have observed that for many pathogens there are no vector competence experiments, and that the level of evidence provided by the scientific literature is often not sufficient to validate the transmission of a specific pathogen by a specific species. We therefore carried out a bibliographical study to collate the validation evidence for the transmission of parasitic, viral, or bacterial pathogens by spp.

Efficient one-pot, three-component procedure to prepare new α-aminophosphonate and phosphonic acid acyclic nucleosides.

Nucleosides Nucleotides Nucleic Acids

June 2021

Unité de Chimie Biomoléculaire et Médicinale, Laboratoire de Chimie Biomoléculaire, Faculte des Sciences Semlalia, Cadi Ayyad University, Marrakech, Morocco.

An efficient one-pot three-component Kabachnik-Fields reaction of aldehydes (acyclic nucleosides), amines (or amino acid), and triethyl phosphite proceeded for the synthesis of aminophosphonates using natural phosphate coated with iodine (I@NP) as a catalyst. The novel α-aminophosphonate and phosphonic acid acyclic nucleosides were tested for their anti-HCV and anti-HIV activities. The molecular docking showed that the non-activity of these compounds could be due to the absence of hydrophobic pharmacophores.

Apicomplexan parasites are unicellular eukaryotic pathogens that must obtain and combine lipids from both host cell scavenging and de novo synthesis to maintain parasite propagation and survival within their human host. Major questions on the role and regulation of each lipid source upon fluctuating host nutritional conditions remain unanswered. Characterization of an apicoplast acyltransferase, TgATS2, shows that the apicoplast provides (lyso)phosphatidic acid, required for the recruitment of a critical dynamin (TgDrpC) during parasite cytokinesis.

January 2020

Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution, UMR5554, Université Montpellier II, Montpellier, France.

A major current molecular evolution challenge is to link comparative genomic patterns to species' biology and ecology. Breeding systems are pivotal because they affect many population genetic processes and thus genome evolution. We review theoretical predictions and empirical evidence about molecular evolutionary processes under three distinct breeding systems-outcrossing, selfing, and asexuality.

Copper transporter COPT5 participates in the crosstalk between vacuolar copper and iron pools mobilisation.

Sci Rep

March 2019

Departament de Bioquímica i Biologia Molecular and ERI Biotecmed, Universitat de València, Av. Doctor Moliner, 50, ES-46100, Burjassot, Valencia, Spain.

Copper (Cu) deficiency affects iron (Fe) homeostasis in several plant processes, including the increased Fe requirements due to cuproprotein substitutions for the corresponding Fe counterpart. Loss-of-function mutants from Arabidopsis thaliana high affinity copper transporter COPT5 and Fe transporters NATURAL RESISTANCE-ASSOCIATED MACROPHAGE PROTEIN 3/4 (NRAMP3 and NRAMP4) were used to study the interaction between metals internal pools. A physiological characterisation showed that the copt5 mutant is sensitive to Fe deficiency, and that nramp3nramp4 mutant growth was severely affected under limiting Cu.

Centre de recherche sur les interactions bassins versants-écosystèmes aquatiques (RIVE), Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, C. P. 500, Trois-Rivières, Québec City, Canada G9A 5H7.

Article Synopsis
  • Sexual selection has traditionally been seen as the main driver of sexual dimorphism, but recent research indicates that natural selection might play a more significant role, emphasizing the need to study their trade-offs.
  • The freshwater blenny, a fish from the Mediterranean, exhibits noticeable differences in size and shape between males and females, with variations based on whether they are from lake or river habitats.
  • Findings reveal that river populations show greater sexual size dimorphism and shape differentiation, suggesting that environmental factors like resource availability and predation can influence the dynamics of sexual dimorphism in this species.

Propagative and diffusive regimes of acoustic damping in bulk amorphous material.

Phys Rev E

August 2018

LaMCos, INSA-Lyon, CNRS UMR5259, Université de Lyon, F-69621 Villeurbanne Cedex, France.

In amorphous solids, a non-negligible part of thermal conductivity results from phonon scattering on the structural disorder. The conversion of acoustic energy into thermal energy is often measured by the dynamical dtructure factor (DSF) thanks to inelastic neutron or x-ray scattering. The DSF is used to quantify the dispersion relation of phonons, together with their damping.

Dynamic control of cell polarity is of critical importance for many aspects of cellular development and motility. In Myxococcus xanthus, MglA, a G protein, and MglB, its cognate GTPase-activating protein, establish a polarity axis that defines the direction of movement of the cell and that can be rapidly inverted by the Frz chemosensory system. Although vital for collective cell behaviours, how Frz triggers this switch has remained unknown.

Southeast Asia is a hotspot of anthropogenic emissions where episodes of recurrent and prolonged atmospheric pollution can lead to the formation of large haze events, giving rise to wide plumes which spread over adjacent oceans and neighbouring countries. Trace metal concentrations and Pb isotopic ratios in atmospheric particulate matter < 10 μm (PM) were used to track the origins and the transport pathways of atmospheric pollutants. This approach was used for fortnightly PM collections over a complete annual cycle in Haiphong, northern Vietnam.

Spatio-temporal models have long been used to describe biological systems of cancer, but it has not been until very recently that increased attention has been paid to structural dynamics of the interaction between cancer populations and the molecular mechanisms associated with local invasion. One system that is of particular interest is that of the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) wherein uPA binds uPA receptors on the cancer cell surface, allowing plasminogen to be cleaved into plasmin, which degrades the extracellular matrix and this way leads to enhanced cancer cell migration. In this paper, we develop a novel numerical approach and associated analysis for spatio-structuro-temporal modelling of the uPA system for up to two-spatial and two-structural dimensions.

Article Synopsis
  • - The FrzCD chemoreceptor in Myxococcus xanthus creates central clusters within the cell body, co-locating with its genetic material (nucleoid).
  • - FrzCD binds to the nucleoid through its positively charged tail, which helps recruit signaling complexes, acting independently of specific DNA sequences.
  • - The clustering of FrzCD may enable cooperative interactions among receptors, similar to how membrane-bound chemosensory arrays function.
