Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia and CMV disease have been reported as more frequent in patients undergoing haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Haplo-HSCT) than in those receiving HLA-matched allografts. This could be due to impaired CMV-specific T-cell reconstitution. Here, we conducted a multicenter observational study to assess CMV pp65 and IE-1-specific T cells kinetics in patients undergoing unmanipulated Haplo-HSCT with posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PT/Cy-haplo) and compared it with patients allografted with HLA-matched donors.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia occurs frequently in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-HSCT). There is limited information about the incidence, features, and clinical impact of CMV DNAemia blips (episodes defined by an isolated positive PCR result) in this setting. In this retrospective study, 225 consecutive adult patients undergoing any modality of allo-HSCT at our center between May 2012 and July 2019 were included.

Azacitidine (AZA) is a DNA hypomethylation agent administered in myeloid neoplasms; however, there is still a lack of established predictors of response. We studied 113 patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (n = 85) or acute myeloid leukemia (n = 28) who received AZA to assess the predictive value on response of clinical features, cytogenetics, and molecular markers. Overall, 46 patients (41%) responded to AZA.

Childhood obesity, including overweight, continues increasing worldwide affecting health expectancy, quality of life and healthcare expenditure. These subjects have higher probability of suffering or developing cardio metabolic risk factors. Recent studies have revealed cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as a valuable clinical parameter to identify these subjects and have even suggested cut-off values.

European guidelines on cardiovascular prevention in clinical practice were first published in 1994 and have been regularly updated, most recently in 2016, by the Sixth European Joint Task Force. Given the amount of new information that has become available since then, components from the task force and experts from the European Association of Preventive Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology were invited to provide a summary and critical review of the most important new studies and evidence since the latest guidelines were published. The structure of the document follows that of the previous document and has six parts: Introduction (epidemiology and cost effectiveness); Cardiovascular risk; How to intervene at the population level; How to intervene at the individual level; Disease-specific interventions; and Settings: where to intervene? In fact, in keeping with the guidelines, greater emphasis has been put on a population-based approach and on disease-specific interventions, avoiding re-interpretation of information already and previously considered.

The effect of timing of community acquired respiratory virus (CARV) infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HCT) is an as yet unsettled issue. We evaluate this issue by including all consecutive allo-HCT recipients with molecularly-documented CARV infection during the first year after transplant. The study cohort was drawn from a prospective longitudinal survey of CARV in allo-HCT recipient having respiratory symptoms conducted from December 2013 to December 2018 at two Spanish transplant centers.

Precise identification of patients at highest risk for developing Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia may improve CMV infection management in the allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) setting. Here, we studied the potential use of detecting free CMV micro(mi)RNAs circulating in plasma for predicting CMV DNAemia in this clinical scenario. A total of 62 adult allo-HSCT recipients were included in this prospective observational multicenter study.

Controversy surrounds the potential association between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and increased risk of mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Allo-HSCT). A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases, assessing the association between CMV infection, as documented by the pp65 antigenemia assay or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using blood specimens, and overall mortality (OM) and nonrelapse mortality (NRM) in the allo-HSCT setting. Pooled effects were estimated using the generic inverse variance random effects model.

One of the main goals of the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis is to contribute to a wider and greater knowledge of vascular disease, its prevention and treatment. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in our country and also lead to a high degree of disability and health expenditure. Arteriosclerosis is a multifactorial disease, this is why its prevention requires a global approach that takes into account the different risk factors with which it is associated.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia occurs frequently in CMV-seropositive allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT) recipients, and usually results from reactivation of latent infection established in the recipient. Predicting the occurrence of CMV DNAemia may be helpful in managing CMV infection in allo-HSCT recipients. Here, the kinetics of several inflammatory biomarkers in plasma were characterized and assessed for their potential value in anticipating the development and features of active CMV infection in allo-HSCT recipients, as documented using real-time PCR assays.

It has been reported that low-plasma cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA loads are associated with an increased risk of overall mortality in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Utilizing a conservative strategy for initiation of preemptive antiviral therapy (>1500 IU/mL), we characterized the virological features of spontaneously-resolving episodes of CMV DNAemia and assessed their impact on mortality through the first year after transplantation. We reviewed the CMV DNA polymerase chain reaction results and clinical charts of 230 consecutive adult patients who underwent T-cell replete allo-HSCT at our center.

Introduction: Masked uncontrolled hypertension (MUCH) carries an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) complications and can be identified through combined use of office (O) and ambulatory (A) blood pressure (BP) monitoring (M) in treated patients. However, it is still debated whether the information carried by ABPM should be considered for MUCH management. Aim of the MASked-unconTrolled hypERtension management based on OBP or on ambulatory blood pressure measurement (MASTER) Study is to assess the impact on outcome of MUCH management based on OBPM or ABPM.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a disorder with a high and growing prevalence, is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. It is a constellation of clinical and metabolic risk factors that include abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, and hypertension. Unfortunately, MetS is typically underrecognized, and there is great heterogeneity in its management, which can hamper clinical decision-making and be a barrier to achieving the therapeutic goals of CVD and diabetes prevention.
