Outcome comparison of rotational ankle fractures: Supination external rotation versus pronation external rotation.

Background: Ankle fractures are among the most common types of fractures in the orthopaedic field, and the Lauge-Hansen classification is commonly used to categorize rotational ankle fractures. This study evaluated and compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of surgically treated supination external rotation (SER) and pronation external rotation (PER) injuries of grades III or IV.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed and enrolled 104 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for SER or PER injuries classified as Grades III or IV between January 2016 and December 2021, all performed at a single center.

Introduction: In the last decade, concussions and subconcussive brain trauma in football and other high impact sports have become of increasing concern. Tackling, in youth football, accounts for a high proportion of head impacts and injuries, including concussions. Thus, minimizing head impact severity during tackling may help in reducing concussion risk and subconcussive brain trauma.

Digital Arteriovenous Malformation. An Uncommon Finding: A Case Report.

Vascular malformations (VMs) are dysplastic abnormalities of vascular channels, differing from vascular tumors by their slow growth. Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) arise between weeks 4-10 of intrauterine life, with a prevalence of 1 in 100,000 among Caucasians. Common in the head, neck, and hands, AVMs may be asymptomatic or cause symptoms like pain, deformity, and disability.

An atlas of neuropathic pain-associated molecular pathological characteristics in the mouse spinal cord.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI)-induced neuropathic pain (NP) is a severe disease with high prevalence in clinics. Gene reprogramming and tissue remodeling in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord (SC) drive the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain (NP). However, our understanding of the NP-associated spatial molecular processing landscape of SC and the non-synaptic interactions between DRG neurons and SC cells remains limited.

Improved positioning in robotic assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy using the EDGE MP1000 surgical robot.

This study investigated the impact of an improved body positioning on the effectiveness of EDGE MP1000 robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. We compared clinical data from 39 patients who underwent the procedure at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University between November 2023 and May 2024. The control group (18 patients) received conventional positioning, while the experimental group (21 patients) received precise positioning, which included patient assessments, optimized positioning techniques, and enhanced nursing measures.

Biomechanics of flail chest injuries: tidal volume and respiratory work changes in multiple segmental rib fractures.

Background: Flail chest (FC) injuries are segmental osseous injuries of the thorax that typically result from high-energy blunt trauma and regularly occur in multiple trauma (MT) patients. FC injuries are associated with paradoxical chest wall movements and, thus, have a high risk of respiratory insufficiency or even death. An increasing number of studies recommend an early surgical stabilization of FC injuries, but a definite trigger that would indicate surgery has, thus far, not been identified.

A Pilot Study on the Impact of Smoking on Adipose Derived Stem Cell Function in Burn Patients.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have an important role in the modulation of burned tissue repair through the release of paracrine factors that stimulate the wound healing response. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that smoking status alters the profile of paracrine factors secreted from ADSCs isolated from damaged adipose tissue. Adipose tissue was collected from adult patients (N=8) with severe burn injuries (>20% total body surface area) at the index operation.

Clinical presentation, acute care management and discharge information of patients with thoracic trauma in South Africa and Sweden: a prospective multicenter observational study.

This guideline topic is part of the 2022 update of the German Guideline on the Treatment of Patients with Multiple and/or Severe Injuries.

Machine learning-based prediction for incidence of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography after emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis and acute cholecystitis, with increasing applications even in severe cases. However, the possibility of postoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to manage choledocholithiasis or biliary injuries poses significant clinical challenges. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for ERCP incidence following emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy using advanced machine learning techniques.

Torsion-Induced Traumatic Optic Neuropathy (TITON): A physiologically relevant animal model of traumatic optic neuropathy.

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a common cause of irreversible blindness following head injury. TON is characterized by axon damage in the optic nerve followed by retinal ganglion cell death in the days and weeks following injury. At present, no therapeutic or surgical approach has been found to offer any benefit beyond observation alone.

An open source convolutional neural network to detect and localize distal radius fractures on plain radiographs.

Purpose: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are often initially assessed by junior doctors under time constraints, with limited supervision, risking significant consequences if missed. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can aid in diagnosing fractures. This study aims to internally and externally validate an open source algorithm for the detection and localization of DRFs.

A CD26 tendon stem progenitor cell population contributes to tendon repair and heterotopic ossification.

Inadequate tendon healing and heterotopic bone formation result in substantial pain and disability, yet the specific cells responsible for tendon healing remain uncertain. Here we identify a CD26 tendon stem/progenitor cells residing in peritendon, which constitutes a primitive stem cell population with self-renewal and multipotent differentiation potentials. CD26 tendon stem/progenitor cells migrate into the tendon midsubstance and differentiation into tenocytes during tendon healing, while ablation of these cells led to insufficient tendon healing.

Outpatient Management of a Pediatric Morel-Lavallée Lesion: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Case: Pediatric Morel-Lavallée lesions are infrequent and may present in atypical locations. A 3-year-old boy presented with a nontender, mobile, cystic swelling on the medial aspect of his left distal thigh, 2 weeks after a road traffic accident. The diagnosis was confirmed using 3D ultrasonography.

Therapeutic Effects of Theta Burst Stimulation on Cognition Following Brain Injury.

This case report explores the therapeutic potential of theta burst stimulation (TBS) for cognitive enhancement in individuals with brain injuries. The study presents a 38-year-old male suffering from an organic mental disorder attributed to a traumatic brain injury (TBI), who demonstrated notable cognitive improvements following an intensive TBS protocol targeting the left dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex. The treatment led to significant enhancements in impulse control, irritability, and verbal comprehension without adverse effects.

Educational Level Modifies the Relationship between Standard Deviation of NN Intervals and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Development over Two-years.

Objective: This study investigated how educational levels modify the relationship between the standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) of heart rate variability and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Methods: Participants with physical injuries were enrolled from a trauma center and monitored over two years. Initial assessments included SDNN and educational attainment, along with socio-demographic and clinical variables.

Humeral Shaft Stress Fracture Completion in a Weight Lifter: A Case Report.

Case: A 34-year-old man, amateur weight lifter presented with acute worsening of right shoulder pain after 5 months of prodromal, progressive, atraumatic pain. Imaging showed a short oblique proximal third humeral shaft fracture without evidence of other osseous abnormalities. He was treated operatively with open reduction and internal fixation, healed uneventfully, and returned to weight lifting within 3 months.

Multiple myeloma is a prevalent hematologic cancer. This investigation analyzes the latest global, regional, and national data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021. Data on the incidence, prevalence, disability-adjusted life years, and mortality rates of multiple myeloma, including estimates and 95% uncertainty intervals, were sourced from the 2021 Global Burden of Diseases Study.

Post-Traumatic Hip Osteoarthritis after Pelvic Ring Injuries.

Objectives: While rates of post-traumatic osteoarthritis after acetabulum fracture have been thoroughly studied, there has been less emphasis on hip osteoarthritis after pelvic ring injuries. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of post-traumatic hip osteoarthritis in pelvic ring injury patients. It was hypothesized that more severe pelvic ring injuries would be associated with greater rates of post-traumatic hip osteoarthritis.
