Severe Leptospirosis in a Mexican Woman.

Objective: To describe a severe case of infection by Leptospira in a woman in the northwest of Mexico.

Case Report: A 55-yearold woman from Sonora, México arrived at the Intensive Care Unit due to severe multiple organ failure primarily affecting the respiratory, renal and hepatic systems. Diagnostic tests were performed, and they were positive for anti-Leptospira antibodies, IgM and IgG; and spirochetes were observed on dark field microscopy and confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

MDR1, which is encoded by the ABCB1 gene, is involved in multidrug resistance (hydrophobic), as well as the elimination of xenotoxic agents. The association between ABCB1 gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk in different populations has been described previously; however, the results have been inconclusive. In this study, we examined the association between polymorphisms 3435 C/T and 1236 C/T in the ABCB1 gene and breast cancer development in Mexican women according to their menopausal status and molecular classification.

Glucocorticoids are frequently used in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in order to alleviate symptoms of joint inflammation, retard erosions and to treat extra-articular manifestations, although these drugs may increase the risk of bone mineral loss and osteoporotic fractures. To date, in Mexico there are no studies that identify the frequency of patients with RA with corticosteroids, receiving therapy for osteoporosis. Therefore, we evaluated the prevalence and factors related to the prescription of antiresorptives in 520 Mexican patients with RA.
