The unicellular yeast (fission yeast) retains many of the splicing features observed in humans and is thus an excellent model to study the basic mechanisms of splicing. Nearly half the genes contain introns, but the impact of alternative splicing in gene regulation and proteome diversification remains largely unexplored. Here we leverage Oxford Nanopore Technologies native RNA sequencing (dRNA), as well as ribosome profiling data, to uncover the full range of polyadenylated transcripts and translated open reading frames.

Background: Molecular subtyping of bladder cancer has revealed luminal tumors generally have a more favourable prognosis. However, some aggressive forms of variant histology, including micropapillary, are often classified luminal. In previous work, we found long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression profiles could identify a subgroup of luminal bladder tumors with less aggressive biology and better outcomes.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are regulatory molecules which have been traditionally considered as "non-coding". Strikingly, recent evidence has demonstrated that many non-coding regions, including lncRNAs, do in fact contain small-open reading frames that code for small proteins that have been called microproteins. Only a few of them have been characterized so far, but they display key functions in a wide variety of cellular processes.

Background: A large fraction of genes contains upstream ORFs (uORFs) in the 5' untranslated region (5'UTR). The translation of uORFs can inhibit the translation of the main coding sequence, for example by causing premature dissociation of the two ribosomal units or ribosome stalling. However, it is currently unknown if most uORFs are inhibitory or if this activity is restricted to specific cases.

De novo gene origination has been recently established as an important mechanism for the formation of new genes. In organisms with a large genome, intergenic and intronic regions provide plenty of raw material for new transcriptional events to occur, but little is know about how de novo transcripts originate in more densely-packed genomes. Here, we identify 213 de novo originated transcripts in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using deep transcriptomics and genomic synteny information from multiple yeast species grown in two different conditions.

People use language to express their thoughts and feelings, unveiling important aspects of their psychological traits and social interactions. Although there are several studies describing methodologies to create a collection of words in English related to depression and other conditions, in most of them the selection of words is not clinical or expert based. The objective of this study is twofold: firstly, to introduce a comprehensive collection of Spanish words commonly used by patients suffering from depression, which will be available as a free open source for research purposes (GitHub), and secondly, to study the usefulness of this collection of words in identifying social media posts that could be indicative of patients suffering from depression.

Paraoxonase1 (PON1) seems to exert a major antioxidant effect by removing lipid-peroxidation products. A common polymorphism of the PON1 gene, the PON1-192 genetic polymorphism, modulates PON1 activity and has been related in some studies to coronary heart disease. Oxidized LDL is believed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and there are studies providing support for the oxidative stress theory of aging.
