Electronic address:

Unlabelled: Social cognition (SC) and executive function (EF) have been described as important variables for social functioning and recovery of patients with psychosis. However, the relationship between SC and EF in first-episode psychosis (FEP) deserves further investigation, especially focusing on gender differences.

Aims: To investigate the relationship between EF and different domains of SC in FEP patients and to explore gender differences in the relationship between these domains.

The combination of trastuzumab and pertuzumab as first-line therapy in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer has shown significant clinical benefits compared to trastuzumab alone. However, despite initial therapeutic success, most patients eventually progress, and tumors develop acquired resistance and invariably relapse. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of the mechanisms governing resistance in order to develop targeted therapeutic strategies with improved efficacy.

Background: Up to 20% of COVID-19 patients can suffer COVID-19-related myocardial injury. Elevated cardiac biomarkers, such as hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP, have been related to worse short-term prognosis. However, data on NT-proBNP and long-term prognosis are scarce.

Article Synopsis
  • Solar urticaria is a rare skin condition triggered by sunlight, affecting 41 patients in a study that analyzed long-term outcomes and treatment approaches, particularly with omalizumab over 16 years.
  • The study found that treating patients with omalizumab resulted in significant improvements in symptoms, as indicated by decreased levels of the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) and enhanced Urticaria Control Test scores.
  • Despite a high drug survival rate of 88.9% at 48 months, only one patient successfully discontinued omalizumab on a stepping-down protocol, suggesting that ongoing monitoring and treatment may be necessary for most patients.

  • Gastric cancer is more common in men, and this study explores whether reproductive factors and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) might protect women from it.
  • The analysis included over 2,000 individuals with gastric cancer and more than 7,000 controls across various studies, revealing that longer fertility duration and MHT use may reduce cancer risk in women.
  • The findings suggest a link between reproductive health and decreased gastric cancer risk, highlighting the need for further research on hormonal effects in different stages of a woman’s life.

Electronic address:

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is frequently associated with mutations in the rat sarcoma gene (RAS), leading to worse prognosis. RAS mutations result in active RAS-GTP proteins, favoring myeloid cell proliferation and survival and inducing the NLRP3 inflammasome together with the apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC), which promote caspase-1 activation and interleukin (IL)-1β release. Here, we report, in a cohort of CMML patients with mutations in KRAS, a constitutive activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in monocytes, evidenced by ASC oligomerization and IL-1β release, as well as a specific inflammatory cytokine signature.

Background: Previous investigations pointed out a role for antigen stimulation in Sezary syndrome (SS). High-throughput sequencing of the T cell receptor (TR) offers several applications beyond diagnostic purposes, including the study of T cell pathogenesis.

Methods: We performed high-throughput RNA sequencing of the TR alpha (TRA) and beta (TRB) genes focusing on the complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) in 11 SS and one erythrodermic mycosis fungoides (MF) patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied a medicine called r-tPA that helps treat strokes but can cause bleeding in the brain, making things worse for patients.
  • They looked at certain genetic factors in the body that might affect this bleeding risk after using r-tPA.
  • They found some specific genes that are linked to both blood clotting factors and the risk of bleeding, which could help in understanding how to treat patients better in the future.

  • The ALzheimer's and FAmilies (ALFA) project started in 2013 to explore early signs and genetic factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to aid in detection and prevention.
  • The study involved a detailed genetic analysis of participants, focusing on aspects like amyloid/tau status and included gender differences, and compared findings with data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).
  • Results indicate ALFA successfully formed a group of cognitively healthy individuals who are at a heightened genetic risk for AD, making it an ideal setting for studying early changes in the disease's progression.

The availability of patent chemical data offers public access to a chemical space that is not well covered by other sources collecting small molecules from scholarly literature. However, open applications to facilitate the search and analysis of biologically-relevant molecular structures present in patents are still largely missing. We have developed CIPSI, an open Chemical Intellectual Property Service @ IMIM to assist medicinal chemists in searching and analysing molecules in SureChEMBL patents.

February 2024

Department of Nutrition, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA; Department of Public Health and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR), University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is identified as a serious condition characterized by a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors, but the role of specific metabolites as indicators for its occurrence or reversal is not well understood.
  • A study involving 1468 high-risk participants analyzed plasma metabolites using advanced techniques, finding that 103 metabolites were linked to the onset of MetS and 88 to its reversal over a median follow-up of 4.8 years.
  • Two distinct metabolomic signatures were highlighted, with one correlating strongly with MetS incidence (77 metabolites) and another with MetS reversion (83 metabolites), suggesting potential biomarkers for monitoring this condition.
