The study uses social exchange theory to examine how social relationships affect individual involvement in creativity at work and innovative behavior, mediated by psychological safety. The study disentangles the social relationships at work as informal and formal relationships in terms of two plausible theoretical variables, workplace friendliness and perceived affective climate respectively, for the above purpose. Over a period of three-months, data collection was conducted in the IT and ITeS industry, with a sample of 515 participants and 105 team leads, using a two-pronged approach involving data from both team leads and their subordinates.

There is growing consensus in the Alzheimer's community that combination therapy will be needed to maximize therapeutic benefits through the course of the disease. However, combination therapy raises complex questions and decisions for study sponsors, from preclinical research through clinical trial design to regulatory, statistical, and operational considerations. In January 2024, the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation convened an expert advisory board to discuss the key considerations in each of these areas.

Osteoarthritis.

Lancet

January 2025

School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Department of Rheumatology, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

Osteoarthritis is a heterogeneous disorder that is increasingly prevalent largely due to aging and obesity, resulting in a major disease burden worldwide. Knowledge about the underlying aetiology has improved, with increased understanding of the role of genetic factors, the microbiome, and existence of different pain mechanisms. However, this knowledge has not yet been translated into new treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • Aspergillus species are linked to various conditions in bronchiectasis, including ABPA, AS, and increased IgG levels indicating exposure or infection.
  • A study of nearly 10,000 bronchiectasis patients revealed 6.1% with ABPA, 5.7% with AS, and 8.1% with elevated Aspergillus-specific IgG levels, with these conditions associated with more severe lung issues and exacerbations.
  • Long-term follow-up showed that those with raised IgG levels faced more frequent and severe exacerbations, particularly affecting patients not on inhaled corticosteroids.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to see if changes in MRI-defined bone marrow lesions (BMLs) and inflammatory markers are linked to cartilage loss in knees with osteoarthritis over 24 months.
  • It analyzed data from 629 participants, finding that knees with no BMLs showed significantly less cartilage loss, while those with increasing BML size experienced more cartilage loss.
  • The results suggest that preventing the growth of BMLs and worsening of Hoffa-synovitis could help reduce cartilage deterioration in osteoarthritis patients.

Background: Identifying patients at risk of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is challenging. Delays in NTM-PD identification and management are associated with declining lung function and increased morbidity and mortality.

Study Design And Methods: European NTM-PD experts (n=12) participated in a three-round modified Delphi process to score symptoms and comorbidities potentially associated with NTM-PD as reasons to test for nontuberculous mycobacteria.

Article Synopsis
  • The RATE-AF trial investigated the impact of two heart medications, digoxin and beta-blockers, on heart rate in older patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure, using consumer-grade wearable technology.
  • Over 20 weeks, heart rate data from 53 participants showed no significant difference between the two treatment groups, regardless of physical activity levels.
  • The study suggests that wearables could effectively monitor patients' heart health remotely, providing comparable predictive insights to traditional clinical assessments.

Endometriosis, a common cause for chronic pelvic pain, significantly affects quality of life, fertility, and overall productivity of those affected. Therapeutic options remain limited, and collating evidence on treatment efficacy is complicated. One reason could be the heterogeneity of assessed outcomes in nonsurgical clinical trials, impeding meaningful result comparisons.

Background: Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) based on results from genome-wide association studies offer the prospect of risk stratification for many common and complex diseases. We developed a PRS for alcohol-associated cirrhosis by comparing single-nucleotide polymorphisms among patients with alcohol-associated cirrhosis (ALC) versus drinkers who did not have evidence of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis.

Methods: Using a data-driven approach, a PRS for ALC was generated using a meta-genome-wide association study of ALC (N=4305) and an independent cohort of heavy drinkers with ALC and without significant liver disease (N=3037).

This study aims to examine the impact of renewable energy, carbon emissions, and economic growth on healthcare spending in 36 Asian countries during 2000-2019. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) models have been applied to the panel data for 36 Asian countries. The study's findings show that CO emissions in Asia increased due to public and private health spending, with the commercial health sector having a larger negative influence on CO emissions than the public sector.

Background: Antipsychotics are commonly prescribed to treat a range of psychiatric conditions in women of reproductive age and during pregnancy, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, and insomnia. This study aimed to evaluate whether children exposed to antipsychotic medication prenatally are at increased risk of specific neurodevelopmental disorders and learning difficulties.

Methods: Our population-based cohort study used nationwide register data (1 January 2000-31 December 2020) on pregnant women diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and their live-born singletons from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

  • International guidelines emphasize the importance of airway clearance management in treating bronchiectasis, yet its actual usage across Europe remains unclear.
  • A study involving 16,723 patients from 28 countries showed that 52% reported using regular airway clearance, with significant variation in techniques and usage between countries.
  • Patients using airway clearance tended to have more severe disease and symptoms, and access to specialized respiratory physiotherapy was notably low, especially in Eastern Europe.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study utilized a 4-point sputum colour chart to assess airway inflammation in bronchiectasis patients, analyzing data from 13,484 individuals across 31 countries in the EMBARC registry.
  • - Findings revealed that more purulent sputum correlates with worse lung function, a higher severity of the disease, increased frequency of exacerbations, and greater risk of hospitalizations and mortality.
  • - The research concluded that sputum colour serves as an effective, straightforward indicator for predicting clinical outcomes and disease severity in bronchiectasis patients.

European intersocietal recommendations for the biomarker-based diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders.

Lancet Neurol

March 2024

Department of Neuroscience, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Genetics, Maternal and Child Health (DINOGMI), University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy; IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genoa, Italy.

The recent commercialisation of the first disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer's disease emphasises the need for consensus recommendations on the rational use of biomarkers to diagnose people with suspected neurocognitive disorders in memory clinics. Most available recommendations and guidelines are either disease-centred or biomarker-centred. A European multidisciplinary taskforce consisting of 22 experts from 11 European scientific societies set out to define the first patient-centred diagnostic workflow that aims to prioritise testing for available biomarkers in individuals attending memory clinics.

Article Synopsis
  • Heart failure (HF) is linked to higher risks of major bleeding and all-cause death among atrial fibrillation (AF) patients on non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs), particularly with lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
  • In a study of over 13,000 AF patients treated with edoxaban, 14.1% had HF, and those with HF experienced greater rates of strokes, major bleeding, and mortality compared to those without HF.
  • The findings suggest a need for improved management strategies for AF patients with HF, even though NOACs effectively reduced ischaemic event risks regardless of HF status.
