Earthworms are a key faunal group in agricultural soils, but little is known on how farming systems affect their communities across wide climatic gradients and how farming system choice might mediate earthworms' exposure to climate conditions. Here, we studied arable soil earthworm communities on wheat fields across a European climatic gradient, covering nine pedo-climatic zones, from Mediterranean to Boreal (S to N) and from Lusitanian to Pannonian (W to E). In each zone, 20-25 wheat fields under conventional or organic farming were sampled.

The UV resistance of bacterial endospores is an important quality supporting their survival in inhospitable environments and therefore constitutes an essential driver of the ecological success of spore-forming bacteria. Nevertheless, the variability and evolvability of this trait are poorly understood. In this study, directed evolution and genetics approaches revealed that the Bacillus cereus pdaA gene (encoding the endospore-specific peptidoglycan-N-acetylmuramic acid deacetylase) serves as a contingency locus in which the expansion and contraction of short tandem repeats can readily compromise (PdaA) or restore (PdaA) the pdaA open reading frame.

Introduction: Red clover () is a protein-rich, short-lived perennial forage crop that can achieve high yields, but suffers increasingly from drought in different cultivation areas. Breeding for increased adaptation to drought is becoming essential, but at this stage it is unclear which traits breeders should target to phenotype responses to drought that allow them to identify the most promising red clover genotypes. Proper elimination of bacterial endospores in foods and food processing environment is challenging because of their extreme resistance to various stresses. Often, sporicidal treatments prove insufficient to eradicate the contaminating endospore population as a whole, and might therefore serve as a selection pressure for enhanced endospore resistance. In the sporeforming Bacillus cereus group, Bacillus weihenstephanensis is an important food spoilage organism and potential cereulide producing pathogen, due to its psychrotolerant growth ability at 7 °C.

Trained expert panels are used routinely in boar taint research, with varying protocols for training of panelists and scoring methods. We describe a standardized process for training and scoring, to contribute to standardize the olfactory detection of boar taint. Three experiments are described in which we (1) evaluate the importance of training and the effect of the previous sample, (2) determine detection thresholds on strips and in fat for our panel, and (3) test priming panelists before boar taint evaluation.
