Purpose: Mesothelin (MSLN) is highly expressed in high grade serous/ endometrioid ovarian cancers (HGOC). Anetumab ravtansine (AR) is an antibody drug conjugate directed at MSLN antigen with a tubulin polymerization inhibitor. We assessed safety, activity and pharmacokinetics of the combination AR/bevacizumab (Bev) (ARB) versus weekly paclitaxel (wP)/Bev (PB) in patients with platinum resistant/refractory HGOC (prrHGOC).

We aimed to investigate the wound-healing, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of pterostilbene (PTS) on human gingival fibroblasts (GF). Different concentrations of PTS were applied to GFs and cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. GFs were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the study groups were determined as LPS, LPS + 1 μM PTS, LPS + 10 μM PTS, and control.

In polymerization-induced phase separation, the impact of polymer-substrate interaction on the dynamics of phase separation for polymer blends is important in determining the final morphology and properties of polymer materials as the surface can act as another driving force for phase separation other than polymerization. We modify the previously-developed polymerizing Cahn-Hilliard (pCH) method by adding a surface potential to model the phase separation behavior of a mixture of two species independently undergoing linear step-growth polymerization in the presence of a surface. In our approach, we explicitly model polydispersity by separately considering different molecular-weight components with their own respective diffusion constants, and with the surface potential preferentially acting on only one species.

This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of camellia oil on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD) in mice, as well as its effect on the expression of skin-barrier-related proteins. A mouse model of AD was created via topical application of DNCB; subsequently, the animals were randomly divided into four groups: the blank control (Control), model (Model), moisturizing cream (Moisturizer), and camellia oil (Camellia) groups. The Camellia group received camellia oil, whereas the Moisturizer group was treated with moisturizing cream, as a positive control.

Intestinal barrier damage causes an imbalance in the intestinal flora and microbial environment, promoting a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. This study aimed to explore the mechanism by which adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) repair intestinal barrier damage. The human colon adenocarcinoma cell line Caco-2 and rats were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to establish in vitro and in vivo models, respectively, of intestinal barrier damage.

The innate immune system is tightly regulated by a complex network of chemical signals triggered by pathogens, cellular damage, and environmental stimuli. While it is well-established that changes in the extracellular environment can significantly influence the immune response to pathogens and damage-associated molecules, there remains a limited understanding of how changes in environmental stimuli specifically impact the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, a key component of innate immunity. Here, we demonstrated how shear stress can act as Signal 2 in the NLRP3 inflammasome activation pathway by treating LPS-primed immortalized bone marrow-derived macrophages (iBMDMs) with several physiologically relevant magnitudes of shear stress to induce inflammasome activation.

Treatment options for patients with advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC) are limited. The programmed cell death protein-1 () inhibitors may have synergistic effects with chemotherapy. Therefore, the aim of our study was to provide real-world data on treatment outcomes in BTC patients receiving chemotherapy alone versus a combination of chemotherapy and inhibitors.

Valuing the benefits of reducing firearm violence in the United States.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Harris School of Public Policy, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL 60637.

Justifying a proposed government regulation intended to reduce firearm violence requires a conceptually sound estimate of the monetized value of that impact and how that value is distributed across the population. Some previous estimates do not serve as a valid basis for policy evaluation or are out of date. A nationally representative survey was conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in August 2022 (n = 660).

Despite increased attempts to express equality in speech, biases often leak out through subtle linguistic cues. For example, the subject-complement statement (SCS, "Girls are as good as boys at math") is used to advocate for equality but often reinforces gender stereotypes (boys are the standard against which girls are judged). We ask whether stereotypes conveyed by SCS can be counteracted by gesture.

The alleviation by wheat and oat dietary fiber alone or combined of T2DM symptoms in / mice.

Food Funct

January 2025

Academy of National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, Beijing, China.

The effects of wheat and oat dietary fiber (DF) alone or combined on T2DM remain unclear. In this research, / diabetic mice were fed with diets containing 10% insoluble wheat dietary fiber (WDF), 10% insoluble oat dietary fiber (ODF), and 10% WODF (mixture of WDF and ODF, WDF : ODF = 1 : 1) for 8 weeks. The results showed that WDF, ODF, and WODF all reduced the body weight and fasting blood glucose (FBG) and improved oral glucose tolerance in / mice.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been commonly employed for the functional rehabilitation of stroke patients. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on the vagus nerve (TDCSVN) in improving dysphagia in stroke patients. Patients experiencing dysphagia following a stroke were diagnosed with dysphagia by a water swallow test.

Prussian Blue Nanozyme Featuring Enhanced Superoxide Dismutase-like Activity for Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury Treatment.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Biomaterials and Devices, School of Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, P. R. China.

The blood flow, when restored clinically following a myocardial infarction (MI), disrupts the physiological and metabolic equilibrium of the ischemic myocardial area, resulting in secondary damage termed myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and inflammatory reactions stand as primary culprits behind MIRI. Current strategies focusing on ROS-scavenging and anti-inflammatory actions have limited remission of MIRI.

The risk of herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) increases rapidly after the age of 50 years old. The incidence of herpes zoster and PHN appears to be correctly measured albeit irregularly and the immediate and long-term complications are so poorly measured that the perception of a benign disease remains entrenched among professionals and in the general population. Because acute-phase treatments are only marginally effective in reducing the severity and duration of complications, zoster vaccines have been developed over the last twenty years.

Natural killer (NK) cells can control metastasis through cytotoxicity and IFN-γ production independently of T cells in experimental metastasis mouse models. The inverse correlation between NK activity and metastasis incidence supports a critical role for NK cells in human metastatic surveillance. However, autologous NK cell therapy has shown limited benefit in treating patients with metastatic solid tumors.

Introduction: There is a need for a noninvasive, affordable, sensitive, and specific biomarker to diagnose early acute rejection, to negate the need for frequent biopsies. Dd-cfDNA is a powerful adjunct yet there is limited data on the ethnic differences in its values. There is anecdotal evidence that dd-cfDNA values at rejection may be higher in Black as compared to non-Black recipients.
