Purpose: We evaluated the ocular surface and tear function in patients with periocular vitiligo in this prospective, case-control study.

Methods: Sixty eyes of 30 vitiligo patients with periocular involvement and 100 eyes of 50 control subjects were included in the study. Patients and control subjects were compared for Schirmer test and tear film break-up time (BUT) results and impression cytology findings graded according to Nelson's classification.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the outcomes of using a modified capsular tension ring (CTR) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) in patients suffering from traumatic cataracts with lost zonular support.
  • Sixteen patients underwent surgery, showing significant improvement in corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) from an average of 0.89 logMAR pre-surgery to 0.33 logMAR post-surgery.
  • The results indicated that the modified CTR effectively maintained IOL position, minimized complications (with only 50% experiencing posterior capsule opacification), and improved patient visual outcomes.

Purpose: To evaluate optic nerve head (ONH) characteristics in patients with exfoliation syndrome (EXS).

Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study in which 73 eyes from 73 patients with EXS and 93 eyes from 93 age-matched healthy subjects who met the inclusion criteria were included. Topographic measurements of the ONH and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were performed by confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, using a Heidelberg retina tomograph.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) and topographic parameters of optic nerve head (ONH) in healthy eyes.

Methods: Right eyes of 208 healthy subjects between 40 and 59 years of age with refractive error less than 1 D were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Ultrasonic pachymeter was used to measure CCT, and the ONH parameters were obtained by using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope.

Purpose: This study assessed the phoric and refractive changes possibly caused by visual display unit (VDU) activity.

Methods: In a longitudinal trial nearly 6000 VDU operators received two ophthalmological examinations at intervals ranging from 34 to 43 months. The findings from the two examinations were correlated to VDU work (hours daily and years of VDU work), age and sex.

The authors report on the results obtained in the crystallization of the aqueous humor in 6 patients suffering from cataract with pseudoexfoliation syndrome. The principle characteristics of the aqueous in these cases are described and are compared with the features of aqueous humor in 20 cases of uncomplicated cataract. Tetragonal shaped masses of material with a distinct tendency to localization in the intersections of fern patterns were demonstrated in the crystallized aqueous from patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.

There are two distinct forms of multiple carboxylase deficiency. A neonatal onset form is due to deficiency of holocarboxylase-synthetase. A later onset form in which neurological abnormalities are seen as well as those of the skin and hair is due to biotinidase deficiency.
