Medication-related problems in older people in Catalonia: A real-world data study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine medication-related problems (MRPs) in primary care patients over 65 years of age.

Methods: Cross-sectional study based on the electronic health records of patients (65-99 years of age) visited in 284 primary health care centers during 2012 in Catalonia.

Variables: age, sex, sociodemographic variables, number of drugs, kidney and liver function and MRPs (duplicate therapy, drug-drug interactions, potentially inappropriate medications [PIMs] and drugs contraindicated in chronic kidney disease and in liver diseases).

Is kidney function associated with cognition and mood in late life? : The Screening for CKD among Older People across Europe (SCOPE) study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), cognitive impairment and depression share common risk factors. Previous studies did not investigate the possible association between kidney function and cognitive and mood disorders in older persons in a broad range of kidney function. The present study explored associations between kidney function, cognition and mood in outpatients of 75 years and over.

Background: Different mechanisms connect the nutritional status with the occurrence and the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Background: Reduced kidney function has become a major public health concern, especially among older people, as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is associated with increased risk of end stage renal disease and mortality. The impact of CKD on falls in older community-dwelling persons is not well investigated.

We conducted complementary serological and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate whether alterations in circulating levels of bilirubin are associated with risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). We decided a priori to perform analyses separately in men and women based on suggestive evidence that associations may differ by sex.

Effect of thickness and occlusal accommodation on the degree of satisfaction with mouthguard use among water polo players: A randomized crossover trial.

Background/aim: The optimal mouthguard type and design for each player and sport are currently unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of using a thicker custom-made mouthguard with occlusal accommodation on the degree of satisfaction among water polo players.

Material And Methods: Twenty-five elite water polo players participated in this randomized four-period crossover trial conducted from February to May 2019.

Bayes-based dosing of infliximab in inflammatory bowel diseases: Short-term efficacy.

Aims: Therapeutic drug monitoring of infliximab can guide clinical decisions in patients with loss of response and in those who can benefit from a de-intensification. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of therapeutic drug monitoring combined with Bayesian forecasting methodology on clinical response in a real-world dataset of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease.

Methods: We performed a single-centre prospective study with one-group pre-test/post-test design in 108 adult inflammatory bowel disease patients treated with model-based dosing of infliximab maintenance treatment.

Clinical features and outcomes of asymptomatic pulmonary sarcoidosis. A comparative cohort study.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with asymptomatic pulmonary sarcoidosis (APS) detected incidentally and compare them with symptomatic non-Löfgren sarcoidosis (SnLS) patients.

Methods: Patients diagnosed as having APS at a University hospital in Barcelona, Spain, followed prospectively from 1976 to 2018. APS was defined as the presence of bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy (BHL) with or without lung parenchymal involvement discovered incidentally on chest radiograph or CT scan.

Materials And Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted in four Catalan prisons chosen at convenience with a random stratified sample of the penitentiary population 25 to 65 years old taken within these centres. A urine specimen was analysed using the Anyplex CT/NG Seegene technique.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of a representative sample (n=736) of the adult population (24+ years old) from Barcelona, Spain in 2013-2014.

Blood pressure and risk of cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.

Several studies have reported associations of hypertension with cancer, but not all results were conclusive. We examined the association of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure with the development of incident cancer at all anatomical sites in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals) were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, stratified by EPIC-participating center and age at recruitment, and adjusted for sex, education, smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diabetes and dietary (in women also reproductive) factors.

Material And Methods: NICOLAS is a phase-II trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of nivolumab combined with CRT in stage III NSCLC.

Elderly sarcoidosis: A comparative study from a 42-year single-centre experience.

Objectives: To describe the clinical features and outcomes in elderly patients with sarcoidosis and to compare them with younger patients.

Material And Methods: Retrospective study of a large cohort of 668 consecutive patients with sarcoidosis prospectively collected during 42 years at the Bellvitge University Hospital, a tertiary care single-centre in Barcelona, Spain. Elderly sarcoidosis was defined as sarcoidosis diagnosed in patients ≥65 years-old.

The extra virgin olive oil phenolic oleacein is a dual substrate-inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase.

Catechol-containing polyphenols present in coffee and tea, while serving as excellent substrates for catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT)-catalyzed O-methylation, can also operate as COMT inhibitors. However, little is known about the relationship between COMT and the characteristic phenolics present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). We here selected the EVOO dihydroxy-phenol oleacein for a computational study of COMT-driven methylation using classic molecular docking/molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics, which were supported by in vitro activity studies using human COMT.
