Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine medication-related problems (MRPs) in primary care patients over 65 years of age.
Methods: Cross-sectional study based on the electronic health records of patients (65-99 years of age) visited in 284 primary health care centers during 2012 in Catalonia.
Variables: age, sex, sociodemographic variables, number of drugs, kidney and liver function and MRPs (duplicate therapy, drug-drug interactions, potentially inappropriate medications [PIMs] and drugs contraindicated in chronic kidney disease and in liver diseases).

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), cognitive impairment and depression share common risk factors. Previous studies did not investigate the possible association between kidney function and cognitive and mood disorders in older persons in a broad range of kidney function. The present study explored associations between kidney function, cognition and mood in outpatients of 75 years and over.

Background: Different mechanisms connect the nutritional status with the occurrence and the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The end-stage renal disease is complicated by catabolic inflammatory reactions and cachexia which leads to malnutrition (undernutrition). On the other hand, obesity is an important risk factor for the development and acceleration of CKD.

Background: Reduced kidney function has become a major public health concern, especially among older people, as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is associated with increased risk of end stage renal disease and mortality. Falls are a serious negative health outcome in older persons with one third of people aged 65 years experiencing a fall per year and increasing fall rates with increasing age. The impact of CKD on falls in older community-dwelling persons is not well investigated.

Background: Quality of life (QoL) refers to the physical, psychological, social and medical aspects of life that are influenced by health status and function. The purpose of this study was to measure the self-perceived health status among the elderly population across Europe in different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Methods: Our series consisted of 2255 community-dwelling older adults enrolled in the Screening for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among Older People across Europe (SCOPE) study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known to be associated with several co-occurring conditions. We aimed at exploring multimorbidity patterns associated with CKD, as well as the impact of physical performance and CKD severity on them in a population of older outpatients.
Methods: Our series consisted of 2252 patients enrolled in the Screening of CKD among Older People across Europe multicenter observational study.

Background: Bilirubin, a byproduct of hemoglobin breakdown and purported anti-oxidant, is thought to be cancer preventive. We conducted complementary serological and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate whether alterations in circulating levels of bilirubin are associated with risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). We decided a priori to perform analyses separately in men and women based on suggestive evidence that associations may differ by sex.

Background/aim: The optimal mouthguard type and design for each player and sport are currently unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of using a thicker custom-made mouthguard with occlusal accommodation on the degree of satisfaction among water polo players.
Material And Methods: Twenty-five elite water polo players participated in this randomized four-period crossover trial conducted from February to May 2019.

Aims: Therapeutic drug monitoring of infliximab can guide clinical decisions in patients with loss of response and in those who can benefit from a de-intensification. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of therapeutic drug monitoring combined with Bayesian forecasting methodology on clinical response in a real-world dataset of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease.
Methods: We performed a single-centre prospective study with one-group pre-test/post-test design in 108 adult inflammatory bowel disease patients treated with model-based dosing of infliximab maintenance treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with asymptomatic pulmonary sarcoidosis (APS) detected incidentally and compare them with symptomatic non-Löfgren sarcoidosis (SnLS) patients.
Methods: Patients diagnosed as having APS at a University hospital in Barcelona, Spain, followed prospectively from 1976 to 2018. APS was defined as the presence of bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy (BHL) with or without lung parenchymal involvement discovered incidentally on chest radiograph or CT scan.

Background: Infective dermatitis associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), (IDH), is a chronic eczema occurring in HTLV-1 infected children. Rare cases of adulthood IDH have been reported and no study until now aimed to compare juvenile and adulthood IDH.
Methodology/principal Findings: Twelve cases of adulthood IDH followed for a mean time of 7.
Objectives: Determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection, the risk factors for infection in inmates aged 25 to 65 years old in four Catalan prisons.
Materials And Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted in four Catalan prisons chosen at convenience with a random stratified sample of the penitentiary population 25 to 65 years old taken within these centres. A urine specimen was analysed using the Anyplex CT/NG Seegene technique.

Oral bisphosphonates (oBPs) have been associated with reduced fractures and mortality. However, their risks and benefits are unclear in patients with moderate-severe CKD. This study examined the association between oBPs and all-cause mortality in G3B-5D CKD.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with endothelial dysfunctions thus prompting links between microcirculation (MC), inflammation and major cardiovascular risk factors.
Purpose Of The Study: We have previously reported that siRNA-silencing of CD40 (siCD40) reduced atherosclerosis (ATH) progression. Here, we have deepened on the effects of the siCD40 treatment by evaluating retrospectively, in stored kidneys from the siCD40 treated ApoE mice, the renal microcirculation (measured as the density of peritubular capillaries), macrophage infiltration and NF-κB activation.

Calcium is the most abundant element in the human body. Its role is essential in physiological and biochemical processes such as signal transduction from outside to inside the cell between the cells of an organ, as well as the release of neurotransmitters from neurons, muscle contraction, fertilization, bone building, and blood clotting. As a result, intra- and extracellular calcium levels are tightly regulated by the body.

Several studies have reported associations of hypertension with cancer, but not all results were conclusive. We examined the association of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure with the development of incident cancer at all anatomical sites in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals) were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, stratified by EPIC-participating center and age at recruitment, and adjusted for sex, education, smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diabetes and dietary (in women also reproductive) factors.

Catechol-containing polyphenols present in coffee and tea, while serving as excellent substrates for catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT)-catalyzed O-methylation, can also operate as COMT inhibitors. However, little is known about the relationship between COMT and the characteristic phenolics present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). We here selected the EVOO dihydroxy-phenol oleacein for a computational study of COMT-driven methylation using classic molecular docking/molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics, which were supported by in vitro activity studies using human COMT.
