Colorectal liver metastases grow following different histologic growth patterns (HGPs), classified as desmoplastic and nondesmoplastic (dHGP, non-dHGP), being the latter associated with worst prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the tumor microenvironment (TME) between HGPs supporting different survival. Multiplexed immunohistochemical staining was performed with the Opal7 system in a 100-patients cohort to evaluate the tumor-liver interface with three different cell panels: lymphoid, myeloid, and carcinoma-associated fibroblasts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the relationship between phase angle (PhA), a marker of hydration and nutritional status, and the development of sarcopenia in older adults.
  • It involved 696 participants aged 75 and older, assessing them for sarcopenia and related physical capabilities over 24 months using various tests and methods.
  • While lower baseline PhA was observed in those who developed sarcopenia, it was not confirmed as a significant predictor after accounting for other related factors, raising questions about its practical use as an early marker for sarcopenia risk.

A Core Outcome Set for Efficacy of Acute Treatment of Hereditary Angioedema.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

June 2024

Department of Vascular Medicine, Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences, Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Clinical trials investigating drugs for the acute treatment of hereditary angioedema attacks have assessed many different outcomes. This heterogeneity limits the comparability of trial results and may lead to selective outcome reporting bias and a high burden on trial participants.

Objective: To achieve consensus on a core outcome set composed of key outcomes that ideally should be used in all clinical efficacy trials involving the acute treatment of hereditary angioedema attacks.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidemiological studies suggest that the link between dietary protein intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD) might depend on whether the protein is plant- or animal-based, but previous research has been inconclusive.
  • The analysis involved over 16,000 CVD cases and aimed to assess how different protein sources impact the risk of CVD, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and stroke using various statistical methods.
  • Findings revealed that plant-derived protein intake was associated with a lower incidence of total stroke in never smokers, especially when replacing red and processed meat proteins, but overall, neither protein source showed a significant association with CVD, IHD, or stroke risk.

Background: Capsaicin is a highly selective agonist of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1. The adhesive capsaicin patch provides a high capsaicin concentration (8%) directly in the painful area - its efficacy in benign peripheral neuropathic pain (diabetic neuropathy or postherpetic neuralgia) has recently been described in the literature. However, there is scant evidence of its efficacy in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).

Enoxaparin for Long-Term Therapy of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Cancer and Renal Insufficiency.

Thromb Haemost

April 2024

Faculty of Health Sciences, Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, CIBER Enfermedades Respiratorias (CIBERES), Madrid, Spain.

Background:  The optimal therapy of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients with renal insufficiency (RI) is unknown. Current guidelines recommend to use low-molecular-weight heparin over direct oral anticoagulants to treat VTE in cancer patients at high risk of bleeding.

Methods:  We used the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad Tromboemb00F3lica (RIETE) registry to compare the 6-month incidence rates of (1) VTE recurrences versus major bleeding and (2) fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) versus fatal bleeding in three subgroups (those with mild, moderate, or severe RI) of cancer patients receiving enoxaparin monotherapy.
