Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is the cause of most genital herpes while HSV-1 is responsible for orolabial and facial lesions. In immunocompromised individuals, like HIV patients, impaired immunity leads to more frequent symptomatic and asymptomatic HSV infection. Fifty-two blood samples from HIV patients with clinically diagnosed HSV infection were taken as cases, while 45 blood samples each from HIV-infected (HIV control) and noninfected patients without any herpetic lesion (non-HIV control) were taken as control.

Chikungunya and dengue, two arboviral infections are common in South-East Asia and their early clinical manifestations are very similar hence it is important to discriminate between them as early as possible for better clinical management. The aim of this study was to design a rapid, sensitive and specific method for the differential diagnosis of these two viruses simultaneously. A rapid one-tube duplex RT-PCR assay was developed that requires 110 min including RNA extraction, RT-PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis by using a novel Taq polymerase with high processivity.

Significant progress has been achieved for the development of novel anti-viral drugs in the recent years. Large numbers of these newly developed drugs belong to three groups of compounds, nucleoside analogues, thymidine kinase-dependent nucleotide analogues and specific viral enzyme inhibitors. It has been found that the natural products, like plant extract, plant-derived compounds (phytochemicals) and so on, as well as traditional medicines, like Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Chakma medicines and so on, are the potential sources for potential and novel anti-viral drugs based on different in vitro and in vivo approaches.

Irrespective of type of viruses and the cells they infect, there are a very few specific viral targets for the natural molecules to interact. Most of the available antiviral drugs often lead to the development of viral resistance coupled with the problem of side effects, recurrence and viral latency.

An asymptomatic carrier and all six of his family members were detected positive for HBV DNA in their peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL), by polymerase chain reaction. Direct sequencing of the amplified DNA revealed that the HBV DNA from the carrier and his wife was of subtype ayw. Interestingly, the amplified HBV DNA from the five other members of the family was found to be not only of subtype adw but also contained G to A mutation at nucleotide position 587.
