Article Synopsis
  • Piscinoodinium is a parasitic dinoflagellate that caused a significant outbreak in freshwater fish in the Andaman Islands, India, affecting both native and non-native species.
  • The outbreak led to high mortality rates among various life stages of fish, including larvae and adults, with infected fish showing severe physical symptoms.
  • Molecular analysis identified genetic differences in the strain of Piscinoodinium affecting local species compared to strains found in the USA and other parts of India.

Plant breeding is used to develop crops with host resistance to aphids, however, virulent biotypes often develop that overcome host resistance genes. We tested whether the symbionts, () and (), affect virulence and fecundity in soybean aphid biotypes Bt1 and Bt3 cultured on whole plants and detached leaves of three resistant, , and and one susceptible, , soybean genotypes. Whole plants and individual aphid experiments of with and without and did not show differences in overall fecundity.

Leptospirosis, a global reemerging zoonosis caused by the spirochete Leptospira, has severe human and veterinary implications. Cell wall hydrolase (LIC_10271) with LytM (peptidase M23) and LysM domains are found to be associated with various pathogenic bacteria. These domains regulate effects on extracellular matrix and biofilm components, which promote cell wall remodeling and pathogen dissemination in the host.

Most of the climatic studies projected on heat stress have considered heat extremes, but not the humidity. Hence, this work was carried out to evaluate thermotolerance, production performance, physio-biochemical and immunological response of slow-growing poultry towards various temperature-humidity levels in coastal climate. A total of 240 straight run CARI-Debendra birds were reared in three groups based on temperature-humidity indices (THI > 80, = 75-80 and < 75).

Early and accurate determination of pregnancy is critical to optimum reproductive performance in pigs and enables farmers to early rebreed or cull non-pregnant animals. Most of the conventional diagnostic methods are unsuitable for systematic application under practical conditions. The advent of real-time ultrasonography has made it possible to establish relatively more reliable pregnancy diagnosis.

Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira. Early and accurate diagnosis is the prime step in managing the disease. Secretory proteins of Leptospira remain distinguished for diagnosis due to their availability as soluble proteins in the serum and their interaction with the host immune response due to their extracellular presence.

The present study was undertaken to assess the effects of stem extract of Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy or Guduchi) in the semen extender on seminal parameters, leakage of intracellular enzymes and antioxidants in semen of Sahiwal bull. A total of 48 ejaculates from four bulls were selected for the study. Spermatozoa of 25 × 10 were incubated in 100, 300 and 500 μg of stem extract of Guduchi as Gr II, III and IV, respectively, and pre-freeze and post-thaw semen samples were analysed for seminal parameters [motility, viability, total sperm abnormality (TSA), plasma membrane integrity (PMI) and acrosomal integrity (AcI)], intracellular enzymes [aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] and seminal antioxidants [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase] in comparison with an untreated control group (Gr I).

The present study was designed to assess the interrelationship between hematological, serum biochemical, and endocrinological profiles and oxidative stress markers and lactational stages in crossbred (CB) dairy cows of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI). Healthy (n = 6) CB cows (50-62.50% exotic inheritance; Holstein Friesian × Andaman local) of 4 parity with age of 7-9 years and body weight of 350-400 kg were selected from Cattle Breeding Farm, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Port Blair, ANI.

Introduction: Rice crop meets the calorie and nutritional requirements of a larger segment of the global population. Here, we report the occurrence of intra-varietal variation in a popular rice landrace C14-8 traditionally grown under the geographical isolation of the Andaman Islands.

Methods: Based on grain husk color, four groups were formed, wherein the extent of intra-varietal variation was studied by employing 22 agro-morphological and biochemical traits.

Non-coding RNA (ncRNA)-based SSR markers are highly useful in molecular breeding as ncRNAs play a significant role in gene regulation. In the present study, for the first time in coconut, we have identified 597 ncRNA-derived SSR markers, including 509 long non-coding RNASSRs (lncRNASSRs) and 88 micro RNASSRs (miRNASSRs). Of these, 20 primers (10 each from lncRNA-SSR and miRNA-SSR) were selected, screened on 6 coconut accessions, and 50% produced polymorphic fragments.
