Since the inception of the theory and conceptual framework of genomic selection (GS), extensive research has been done on evaluating its efficiency for utilization in crop improvement. Though, the marker-assisted selection has proven its potential for improvement of qualitative traits controlled by one to few genes with large effects. Its role in improving quantitative traits controlled by several genes with small effects is limited.

Article Synopsis
  • Paclobutrazol (PBZ) use in mango orchards harms soil quality and ecosystem balance, prompting the need for effective remediation strategies.
  • A new strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae, called M6, was isolated from the mango rhizosphere and shown to significantly degrade PBZ, breaking down up to 98.28% of it in lab conditions.
  • Strain M6 not only promotes plant growth but also demonstrates strong biocontrol properties against several pathogenic fungi, indicating its potential as a biological agent for restoring lands impacted by PBZ usage.

Bioculturally significant plants, which have played a key role in sustaining the livelihoods of tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh, India, are facing threats from changing land use patterns, climatic aberrations and socioeconomic stressors. This study highlights two unique grassroots approaches to conserving these species and their associated cultural knowledge within the traditional land use systems of Arunachal Pradesh: Community Knowledge Gardens (CKGs) and Clan Reserve Forests (CRFs). Four CKGs and one CRF, transformed from existing traditional land use systems, were investigated in three socio-ecologically diverse landscapes of Nyishi, Adi and Monpa communities.

Imidacloprid, used against mango hopper, is a persistent insecticide in soil. Microbes have the ability to remove toxic pesticides from soil surface. Metagenomic is an approach for understanding the diversity and related metabolic activities in any environmental sample without culturing the microbes.
