Laboratory of Clinical Immunology-Inflammation and Allergy LICIA, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University, Casablanca 20250, Morocco.

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted at Ibn Rochd University Hospital-Casablanca from 2017 to 2021 found that unusual viral skin infections were often the first signs of inborn errors of immunity in children, affecting 1.3% of patients with suspected IEI.
  • The research involved 591 newly diagnosed patients, identifying specific genetic deficiencies like GATA2, STK4, and COPA in some, linked to chronic or resistant viral skin infections.
  • The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing these skin infections as potential indicators of underlying immunological issues, which could improve diagnosis and treatment for affected children and their families.

The hydatid cyst is a cosmopolitan parasitic infection caused by tapeworms of the genus and is a major public health problem in developing countries. Solitary hydatid cysts located in the buttocks are very rare, and the unusual location of the cyst can aid in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous masses in this area, particularly in endemic areas. In this report, we present the case of a 39-year-old man who was admitted to the emergency department with a painful, abscessed cyst in the buttock region.

Introduction: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA repair genes are mainly correlated with the response to radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). In NPC patients, previous research has studied the association between X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 and 3 (XRCC1 and XRCC3) polymorphisms and radio-therapeutic response. The objective of our study was to test the association between XRCC1 Arg399Gln and XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphisms and the response to radiotherapy in the NPC Moroccan population.

Liposarcomas are neoplasms of mesodermal origin representing less than 1% of all malignant tumors and 1 to 2% of urogenital lesions. Primary retroperitoneal liposarcomas extending into the inguinal canal are rare. We present the case of a large retroperitoneal liposarcoma invading the left testicle and its spermatic cord.

Proposal: A distinct epidemiology, etiology, clinical characteristics, and therapeutic outcomes characterize nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) from other head and neck cancers. An actualized analysis of NPC patients' features enables a global view of NPC management. Accordingly, the current study investigated the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Moroccan patients with NPC, as well as their 4-years survival outcomes and influencing prognostic factors.

Correlation between caloric test results and VHIT VOR gains in unilateral horizontal canal deficits: a cross-sectional study.

Ann Med Surg (Lond)

May 2023

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Ibn Rochd University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the correlation between caloric test results and video head impulse test (VHIT) vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gains in unilateral horizontal canal deficits in order to define a possible threshold value above which caloric deficits should be associated with predictable low VHIT VOR gains. Caloric test and VHIT were realised in 105 patients presenting with symptoms of rotational vertigo occurring within the last 2 weeks. The authors defined the cutoff value for a caloric abnormality as more than 15% of canal deficit, which allowed us to divide our patients on groups based on the severity of their caloric asymmetry.

Hemodynamical evaluation of a coronary artery lesion is an important diagnostic step to assess its functional impact. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) received a class IA recommendation from the European Society of Cardiology for the assessment of angiographically moderate stenosis. FFR evaluation of coronary artery disease offers improvement of the therapeutic strategy, deferring unnecessary procedures for lesions with a FFR > 0.

Int J Surg Case Rep

May 2023

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Ibn Rochd University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University. Casablanca, Morocco.

Introduction And Importance: Parapharyngeal masses are rare but critical because of their deep location and their important anatomical relationships with the surrounding structures. Their management poses a challenge in terms of etiological diagnosis and adequate therapeutic approach. The clinical and especially the radiological examination have an important role not only for the diagnosis but also for the determination of the appropriate management and for the orientation towards the nature of the mass.

Human inherited complete STAT2 deficiency underlies inflammatory viral diseases.

J Clin Invest

June 2023

Laboratory of Inborn Errors of Immunity, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • STAT2 is a crucial transcription factor activated by specific interferons, and 23 patients with mutations leading to a complete loss of STAT2 function were studied.
  • These patients suffered from severe immune issues, including disastrous reactions to live vaccines and deadly viral infections like critical influenza and COVID-19 pneumonia.
  • The study emphasizes the danger of AR complete STAT2 deficiency, as it causes significant inflammation and high mortality rates, especially in young children, due to unregulated viral responses.

The aim of this study is to estimate the fetal radiation dose for a pregnant patient treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Due to the supradiaphragmatic extensions, two plans are used for this treatment, one for supra-clavicular and the other for cervical lymph nodes, with beam energies of 18 and 6 MV, respectively. We model the ELEKTA accelerator (Versa HD Ltd, Crawly, UK) and the pregnant patient using GATE code.

HLA-C Genotyping Reveals Haplotype C*07 as a Potential Biomarker of Late Psoriasis Onset in Moroccan Patients.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

January 2023

Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Pathology, Research Team on Immunopathology of Infectious and Systemic Diseases, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University of Casablanca, Casablanca 20000, Morocco.

Psoriasis still has an unknown etiology. Genetic predisposition shows the association between HLA-Cw6 allele and psoriasis. Although biotherapies have been proven effective in psoriasis treatment, methotrexate (MTX) is still used as a first-line systemic therapy due to its efficacy/affordability, but the differential response to MTX is mostly related to interindividual genetic variability and remains an issue.
