Objective: The morphology and functions of the proximal and distal large intestine are not the same. The incidence of colorectal cancer in these regions is also different, as tumors more often appear in the descending colon than in the ascending colon. Inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer can increase transepithelial permeability, which is a sign of reduced intestinal barrier function.

I.P.Pavlov Institute of Physiology RAS, 6 nab. Makarova, Saint Petersburg 199034, Russian Federation; e-mail:

The importance of studying neurological and mental changes in aged non-human primates, in particular rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), is due to their genetic and physiological similarity with humans, which in preclinical studies of age-dependent cognitive decline correction makes them preferable to rodents. In this paper we study the behavior of three older monkeys in solving conditioned-reflex task of image differentiation. The obtained values of several cognitive characteristics were compared with those determined for the same subjects in their youth more than 15 years ago.

Laboratory of Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems Physiology, I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia.

We studied the effect of IFNα-2b and IFNβ-1a on phasic and tonic contractions of isolated bovine mesenteric lymphatic vessels and nodes. IFNα-2b and IFNβ-1a in concentrations of 250-1000 U/ml produced dose-dependent negative chronotropic and inotropic effects on spontaneous phasic contractions and tonus of lymphatic vessels and nodes. In de-endothelialized lymphatic vessels and nodes, IFNα-2b and IFNβ-1a in the same concentrations had less pronounced inhibitory effect on spontaneous contraction and tonus.

Behavior Disorders Caused by Perinatal Hypoxia in Juvenile Rats and Their Correction with GABA Derivative.

Bull Exp Biol Med

December 2017

Laboratory of Ontogenesis of the Nervous System, St. Petersburg, Russia.

We studied the effects of acute normobaric hypoxia on postnatal day 2 (model of preterm pregnancy) on reflex activity and behavior of juvenile male Wistar rats and the possibility of correction of behavioral deficit by administration of GABA derivative Salifen after hypoxia. It is shown, that perinatal hypoxia impaired righting reflex and forelimb grip strength and increased motor activity in juvenile male rats. Administration of Salifen for 14 days in a dose of 15 mg/kg improved reflex activity and behavior of rats, which indicates the prospect of further study of the therapeutic efficacy of this drug on models of neonatal encephalopathy.

Anxiety and anxiety-like disorders describe many mental disorders, yet fear is a common overwhelming symptom often leading to depression. Currently two basic strategies are discussed to treat anxiety: pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy. In the pharmacotherapeutical clinical approach, several conventional synthetic anxiolytic drugs are being used with several adverse effects.

Consolidation of the conditioned food aversion response in Helix lucorum was associated with induction of histone H3 acetylation and methylation. We hypothesized that not only activatory, but also inhibitory p38 MARK-mediated pathways are involved in these processes. To assess the contribution of p38 MAPK to epigenetic processes, we studied the effect p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580 on acetylation of histone H3 during training of Helix lucorum.

In primary culture of mouse hippocampal neurons, peptide EDR (200 ng/ml) under conditions of amyloid synaptotoxicity (a model of Alzheimer's disease) increased the number of mushroom spines by 71% and returned this parameter to the normal level. Under the same conditions, tripeptide KED (200 ng/ml) increased the number of mushroom spines in hippocampal neurons by 20%. Tripeptide EDR can be recommended for further experimental study as a candidate neuroprotective agent for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

EDL peptide produced a nephroprotective effect on experimental models gentamycin-induced nephropathy and ischemia/reperfusion kidney injury in rats. The nephroprotective effect of EDL peptide manifested in prevention of oliguria and retention azotemia, a decrease in proteinuria and sodium excretion, prevention of critical decrease in activities of antioxidant enzymes, suppression of LPO, and normalization of energy supply to kidneys cells. Our findings confirm the prospects of further studies of the nephroprotective properties of peptide EDL in various pathologies of the kidneys.

We studied the effects of different modes of hypobaric hypoxia on the content of epigenetic factors acH3K24, meH3K9, and meDNA modulating conformational characteristics of chromatin and gene expression in neurons of associative complex of rat parietal neocortex. Severe destructive hypoxia dramatically reduced the level of acH3K24 in 3 h after the end of exposure and increased meH3K9 and meDNA content. By contrast, 3-fold (but not single) adaptive exposure to moderate hypobaric hypoxia that produced a neuroprotective effect enhanced neuronal acH3K24 expression and decreased both meH3K9 and meDNA levels.
