[Natural age-related cognitive impairments: overview of recent investigations in non-human primates.].

Human aging is followed by the weakening of cognitive functions of the brain. The relevance of the study of this process as well as the search for ways of its medical correction increases due to the rise of the middle life span in developed countries. Non-human primates are recognized as the most appropriate biological model for the experimental study of natural cognitive aging mechanisms.

Altered dopamine D3 receptor gene expression in MAM model of schizophrenia is reversed by peripubertal cannabidiol treatment.

Gestational methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) treatment produces offspring with adult phenotype relevant to schizophrenia, including positive- and negative-like symptoms, cognitive deficits, dopaminergic dysfunction, structural and functional abnormalities. Here we show that adult rats prenatally treated with MAM at gestational day 17 display significant increase in dopamine D3 receptor (D3) mRNA expression in prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus and nucleus accumbens, accompanied by increased expression of dopamine D2 receptor (D2) mRNA exclusively in the PFC. Furthermore, a significant change in the blood perfusion at the level of the circle of Willis and hippocampus, paralleled by the enlargement of lateral ventricles, was also detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques.

How does the human visual system compare the speeds of spatially separated objects?

We measured psychophysical thresholds for discriminating the speeds of two arrays of moving dots. The arrays could be juxtaposed or could be spatially separated by up to 10 degrees of visual angle, eccentricity being held constant. We found that the precision of the judgments varied little with separation.

Contribution of Hydrogen Sulfide to Dilation of Rat Cerebral Arteries after Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury.

The study examined the effect of HS on the tone of cerebral arteries in rats after global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and cooperation between NO and HS in the control over cerebral circulation during the postischemic period. In control sham-operated and in experimental rats with ischemia/reperfusion injury, the diameter of pial arteries was repeatedly measured in vivo under a light microscope after removal of parietal bone and dura mater in 1 h and in 7 days after the surgery. The study established that HS is an important signaling molecule in pial arteries, where it is responsible for vasodilation.

Acclimatization to Middle Attitude Hypoxia Masks the Symptoms of Experimental Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, but Does Not Affect Its Pathogenetic Mechanisms.

The effects of acclimatization to middle attitude hypoxia on the resistance to acute emotional stress were studied on the model of posttraumatic stress disorder in rats. Anxyolitic, but not anxiogenic effect was observed in acclimatized rats. However, acclimatized rats with posttraumatic stress disorder were characterized by hypofunction of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis, which is typical of this pathology, and reduction in corticosterone/dehydroepiandrosterone ratio.

[Features of pathogenesis and COVID-19 course for the elderly and old age.].

The causative agents of coronavirus infection have long been considered the cause of benign respiratory diseases «common colds» until their pathogenic types appeared on the epidemic arena: SARS-CoV-1, MERS and finally, SARS-CoV-2. Diseases caused by the listed viruses characterized by moderate invasiveness and noticeable mortality compared to other respiratory viruses. The pathogenesis of these infections is based on a wide range of innate immunity dysfunctions, manifested in the direct suppression of anti-inflammatory functions and, on the contrary, the activation of pro-inflammatory functions, such as the assembly and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, as well as the synthesis and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.

Vitamin D and Depression in Women: A Mini-review.

Affective-related disorders, including depression, are constantly rising, complicating people's personal lifestyle increasing disqualification and hospital care. Because of the high intensity of urbanization, our lifestyle and food have altered dramatically in the last twenty years. These food modifications have been associated with scores of depression and other affective-related disorders in urbanized countries with high economic levels.

[Noninvasive spinal cord electrical stimulation in the complex rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury].

Background: Spinal cord injury causes significant impairments of both motor and pelvic organ functions. Latest studies have shown impressive potentials for using transcutaneous spinal cord electrical stimulation (TcSCES) in the late period of injury to restore motor functions. All results were obtained in a limited number of patients in the specific conditions of a physiological experiment.

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography based imaging biomarkers for diabetic retinopathy.

To evaluate the role of central subfield thickness (CST), cube average thickness (CAT), and cube volume (CV) as imaging biomarkers for severity of diabetic retinopathy within the ETDRS-based grades of retinopathy using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). This study aims to evaluate the role of macular CST, CAT, and CV on SD-OCT as imaging biomarkers for severity of DR. One hundred ninety-four consecutive cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided according to ETDRS classification: diabetes mellitus without retinopathy (No DR; n = 65), nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR; n = 66), and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR; n = 63).

Intestinal ischemic-reperfusion (IR) injury has detrimental effects on both local and distant organs in the body. Betanin is known for its antioxidant properties, and it is found mostly in vegetables. Differences Between the Prenatal Effects of Fluoxetine or Buspirone Alone or in Combination on Pain and Affective Behaviors in Prenatally Stressed Male and Female Rats.

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine and the 5-HT1A receptor agonist buspirone are used to treat depression and anxiety. Previously we demonstrated that chronic stress during pregnancy (prenatal stress) in rats, used as a model of maternal depression risk, increased inflammatory pain and depressive-like behavior in the offspring; buspirone injected to pregnant dams was protective. Clinically, the addition of buspirone to fluoxetine increases the latter's efficacy in treating depression in patients.

[Polypeptide vessel complex and its role in physiology function regulation in aging pathology.].

In review it is shown data about polypeptide vessel complex, extracted from calf vessel and named Slavinorm® (Vasolin). Slavinorm® had therapeutic effects in cardio-vascular age related pathology in animal models. Cerebral Blood Flow in SHR Rats after Transplantation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Intracerebral transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells to 6- and 12-month-old SHR rats induced angiogenesis in the pia mater. In 6-months-old SHR rats, perfusion in the brain tissue after cell transplantation considerably increased, while in 12-month-old rats it remained practically unchanged. We also observed marked activation of regulatory processes in the cerebral vascular system, most pronounced in 12-month-old rats.

Prenatal Stimulation of 5-HT Receptors Improves Adaptive Behavior in Prenatally Stressed Rats.

Various types of adaptive behavior during the prepubertal period were analyzed in the offspring of rats receiving chronic injections of serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine, 5-HT receptor agonist buspirone, or their combination starting from gestation day 9 and subjected to immobilization stress from the 15th day of pregnancy until delivery. Prenatal stress increased pain sensitivity, prolonged inflammatory pain response, and increased the levels of anxiety and depression. Chronic administration of drugs acting through 5-HT receptors to pregnant rats improved the studied behavioral parameters in their offspring.

[Effect of tryptophan and kynurenine on the cellular proliferation in the organotypic tissue culture of brain cortex in young and old rats.].

Metabolic disorders of L-kinurenin, which is an intermediate product of the breakdown of genetically encoded amino acid L-tryptophan, is one of the links in the development of a number of neuropathological processes. The influence of tryptophan and kynurenine on cell proliferation in organotypic tissue culture of the cerebral cortex in young and old rats was studied. Tryptophan in effective concentration (0,5 ng/ml) inhibited cellular proliferation of the cerebral cortex of young and old rats by 35 and 18%, respectively.

Effect of TRPV1 on Activity of Isoforms of Constitutive Nitric Oxide Synthase during Regulation of Bicarbonate Secretion in the Stomach.

Application of mild irritants (1 M NaCl; pH 2.0) on the gastric mucosa potentiates the protective secretion of bicarbonates by epithelial cells. This response is mainly mediated by capsaicin-sensitive afferent nerve endings located in the submucosa.

[The influence of peptides on the morphofunctional state of old rats kidneys.].

More than a quarter of the elderly and senile age population suffers from kidney pathology. For this reason, a prophylaxis of kidney diseases with the safe and effective nephroprotectors is a priority of gerontology. An influence of polypeptide kidney complex (PKC), peptides AED, EDL, AEDG on the functional state of old rats kidneys was studied in research.

[On the use of mathematical statistics methods in clinical and experimental studies.].

In the paper a number of issues, including conceptual ones, related to the specific features of making statistical decisions, choosing tests and computing characteristics that will strengthen the evidence base of the conclusions obtained when analyzing data using methods of mathematical statistics, are considered. The paper aims not to describe the methods of mathematical statistics themselves, but to analyze the conditions and the need to apply the most common tests. In particular, the magnitude of the indicator of the statistical significance of the observed effects - p-value - and the sample size to obtain a significant effect are discussed, the effect of multiple comparisons, the application of the Bayesian approach, and others are considered.

[Stimulating effect of water-soluble fraction from brown algae Fucus vesiculosus extract on cell proliferation in tissue culture of young and old rats.].

The influence of water-soluble fraction F-55 of brown algae extract Fucus vesiculosus on the development of organotypic tissue culture of different genesis, originating from three germ leaves in young and old rats was studied. The preparation F-55 has a stimulating effect on the processes of cell proliferation in the tissues of ecto-, ento- and mesodermal genesis (cerebral cortex, myocardium, spleen and liver), by regulating the processes of cell proliferation and apoptosis. The revealed strengthening of regeneration processes in explants from both young and old rats under the influence of F-55 preparation in the range of ultra-low concentrations of 10-100 ng/ml can serve as a basis for the creation of new medicinal cytoprotective substances that allow to enhance cell regeneration in various tissues in pathological conditions, including those associated with age.

Herewith a lot of information about skin aging and geroprotectors for skin rejuvenation hasn't a scientific background. Thus, understanding the fundamental mechanisms of skin aging becomes the actual task of molecular gerontology.

[The role of «Youth and aging proteins» in essential hypertension pathogenesis.].

Essential hypertension (EG) is an age-associated disease. Often EG of elderly patients haven't good way of treatment. Thus, the search of new target molecules for EG therapy is an actual goal of gerontology and molecular medicine.

Protective Effect of Dexamethasone on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inhibition of Contractile Function of Isolated Lymphatic Vessels and Nodes.

LPS has an inhibitory effect on contractile activity of bovine mesenteric lymphatic vessels and nodes and causes a pronounced decrease in the tone and phase contractions. The selective inhibitor of inducible NO synthase, 1400W, and cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitor, dynastat, significantly attenuated the inhibitory effect of LPS. Dexamethasone interferes with the inhibitory effect of LPS on bovine lymphatic vessels and nodes.
