Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of two novel eyelid curvature measurements to distinguish between normal eyes and different severities of blepharoptosis.

Methods: A comparative cross-sectional analysis of upper eyelid curvature was performed for different severities of patients with unilateral blepharoptosis (congenital and aponeurotic) and normal controls. Mean upper lid contour index (ULCI) and area circularity index (ACI) were calculated for each group by dividing the intercanthal distance by upper eyelid margin length (ULCI) and dividing the interpalpebral area by the area of a circle enclosing the eye (ACI).

Article Synopsis
  • Eyelids are a common location for skin tumors, making up 5-10% of all skin tumors, with surgical treatment focusing on preserving function and appearance.
  • In a study of 450 tumor surgeries, 2.8% had recurrences and 7% had complications, with higher recurrence rates observed at the temporal canthus and for certain types of tumors.
  • The findings suggest that while the recurrence rate is lower than complication rates, the surgical technique chosen significantly affects both recurrence and complication outcomes.

There is a growing interest in development of novel vaccines against respiratory tract infections, due to COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we examined mucosal adjuvanticity and the mucosal booster effect of membrane vesicles (MVs) of a novel probiotic derivative lacking both flagella and potentially carcinogenic colibactin (ΔΔ). ΔΔ-derived MVs showed rather strong mucosal adjuvanticity as compared to those of a single flagellar mutant strain (Δ-MVs).

Background And Importance: Various invasive oculoplastic procedures are commonly utilized to control the rectus muscles and widen the surgical corridor through the endoscopic endonasal removal of large orbital apex cavernous hemangiomas (OACHs). They require additional transconjunctival incision, rectus muscle insertional retraction, or muscle deinsertion at the globe that might not be safe and lead to prolonged postoperative extraocular muscle dysfunction. In this article, the authors described a modified 3-handed extracapsular technique for the resection of a large OACH without an additional procedure for rectus muscle control.

Background: Punctal atresia or agenesis (PA) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the absence or closure of the tear duct puncta, potentially linked to systemic genetic anomalies. The necessity of a genetic workup based solely on the presence of PA remains uncertain. This study investigates a cohort of PA patients, examining the prevalence and types of associated syndromes.

Ocular lichen planus as a cause of recurrent restrictive strabismus.

J AAPOS

June 2024

Boston Children's Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. Electronic address:

We report the case of an 80-year-old man with restrictive strabismus in lateral gaze following multiple oculoplastic procedures for idiopathic epiphora. Despite excellent initial response to nasal conjunctival recession with lysis of adhesions and a miminal recession of the medial rectus muscle, the patient suffered recurrence of diplopia associated with limitation of abduction due to aggressive, deep, subconjunctival scarring. Given the history of oral lichen planus (LP), the patient was diagnosed with ocular involvement of LP.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive hematologic neoplasm characterized by the proliferation of malignant histiocytes. It infrequently presents with periorbital involvement. Here we present the first documented case of ocular adnexal histiocytic sarcoma composite with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma and provide compelling evidence for the transdifferentiation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma to histiocytic sarcoma in an 80-year-old woman.

We previously developed a machine learning (ML)-assisted system for predicting the clinical activity score (CAS) in thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) using digital facial images taken by a digital single-lens reflex camera in a studio setting. In this study, we aimed to apply this system to smartphones and detect active TAO (CAS ≥3) using facial images captured by smartphone cameras. We evaluated the performance of our system on various smartphone models and compared it with the performance of ophthalmologists with varying clinical experience.

Article Synopsis
  • * The review included 20 articles focusing on various oculoplastic conditions, assessing a total of 1428 eyes from 1051 patients, primarily finding minimal changes in refractive measures post-surgery.
  • * The conclusion indicates that there is no strong evidence of significant refractive changes after these surgeries, with some potential for changes after severe ptosis treatment, but more research is needed to validate this.

  • Conjunctival chemosis is a potential complication from lower blepharoplasty that can lead to discomfort and functional issues after surgery.
  • A study conducted at Humanitas Research Hospital analyzed 1047 patients who underwent two different surgical techniques for lower blepharoplasty: transconjunctival and transcutaneous, each with two methods of incision.
  • Results showed that the transcutaneous blepharoplasty with lateral canthoplasty had a significantly higher rate of persistent type 3 conjunctival chemosis compared to the transconjunctival technique, particularly when using radiofrequency methods.

Article Synopsis
  • An ocular osseous choristoma is a rare growth of mature bone found in the eye or surrounding tissue, representing just 1.7% of all epibulbar choristomas.
  • The case study discusses a 20-month-old girl with a painless, firm mass at the left lateral canthus, which had been present since birth, and was diagnosed as an osseous choristoma after biopsy.
  • The findings suggest that osseous choristomas should be included in the diagnosis of eyelid lesions present from birth and highlight the need for further research on their potential links to eye structures.
