Racial and sexual differences of eyebrow and eyelid morphology: three-dimensional analysis in young Caucasian and Chinese populations.

Background: With globalization, oculoplastic surgeons must understand the intricate morphological nuances of the periocular region across ethnicities to ensure precise treatment and avoid facial disharmony or dysfunction. Direct comparisons in two-dimensional (2D)-based periocular morphology between studies can be challenging due to the limited number of parameters and complicated variations in equipment, environments, measurement personnel, and methods. Therefore, it is imperative to explore the detailed three-dimensional (3D) periocular morphological disparities between young Caucasian and Chinese populations.

Periorbital necrobiotic xanthogranuloma resolved with three years of systemic lenalidomide treatment.

Purpose: To describe a case report of the successful management of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma (NXG), a rare periorbital disease.

Observations: A 61-year-old patient presented with bilateral upper and lower lid lesions which were initially misdiagnosed as xanthelasmas and later confirmed to be NXG. Further investigation also uncovered a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Primary lacrimal sac Burkitt lymphoma: A case report and literature review.

Purpose: To highlight a case report of high-grade primary lacrimal sac Burkitt lymphoma in a young adult.

Observation: A 25-year-old gentleman was referred to the oculoplastic center for left eye medial canthal progressive swelling at the level below the medial canthal tendon for two months associated with tearing. He was initially treated for preseptal cellulitis but failed to respond to antibiotics.

Technical notes for a method of eyebrow reconstruction by retroauricular scalp graft: problems and countermeasures.

Purpose: To describe a technique using retroauricular scalp graft for eyebrow reconstruction, along with problems encountered and countermeasures in treatment.

Methods: We present a patient with eyebrow loss following resection of a malignant schwannoma. We initially covered the defect from the upper eyelid to the eyebrow area with artificial dermis for hemostasis and to increase the granulation of the graft bed.

Age-stratified anatomical differences of orbital floor and medial orbital wall blowout fractures.

Purpose: To define the anatomical variance between orbital floor and medial orbital wall blowout fractures, and its change with age.

Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study analyzing data from 557 patients with isolated blowout fractures of the orbital floor or medial orbital wall. Axial and quasi-sagittal CT images were analyzed to compare radiologic data on orbital wall morphology between fracture site groups and among age groups.

A Stepwise Approach to Surgical Decision-making for Lower Eyelid Ectropion: Insights from a Retrospective Study.

Background: Cicatricial lower-eyelid ectropion is a serious complication resulting from undesired lower lid blepharoplasty or impaired wound healing. Surgical treatment for ectropion is challenging for oculoplastic surgeons due to the unpredictability of surgical outcome and the difficulty of surgical design.

Observational Characterization of the Retreatment Course of Patients With Thyroid Eye Disease.

Background: To characterize the retreatment course of patients with thyroid eye disease (TED), who had reactivation after initial therapy with teprotumumab.

Methods: This was a single-center longitudinal cohort study of patients who received an initial course of teprotumumab for active TED and were followed for at least 6 months. Reactivation was defined as the increase of proptosis of 2 mm or more or an increase in Clinical Activity Score (CAS) of two points or more, as adapted from the Optic-X study.

Practice patterns among ophthalmic surgeons in treating concomitant oculoplastic conditions in preoperative period: A questionnaire-based study.

Background: Addressing oculoplastic conditions in the preoperative period ensures both the safety and functional success of any ophthalmic procedure. Some oculoplastic conditions, like nasolacrimal duct obstruction, have been extensively studied, whereas others, like eyelid malposition and thyroid eye disease, have received minimal or no research.

Umbilical Cord Amniotic Membrane Graft as a Skin Substitute in Periocular Reconstruction: A Case Series.

Loss of periocular skin due to cancer, trauma, or surgery is a major reconstructive challenge; resultant tissue contracture can cause eyelid malposition with poor functional and aesthetic outcomes. We describe the successful use of cryopreserved umbilical cord amniotic membrane as a wound covering and scaffold for periorbital anterior lamellar defects. This is a retrospective case series of 4 patients (mean 21 years, range 9-30 years, 3 male) who underwent periocular reconstruction with umbilical cord amniotic membrane of 9 different sites.

Geographic Distribution of US Ophthalmic Surgical Subspecialists.

Importance: While urban counties maintain higher densities of ophthalmologists than rural counties, the geographic distribution of ophthalmic surgical subspecialists has not yet been elucidated. A potential workforce discrepancy may impact the burden of care faced by rural surgeons.

Objective: To assess the geographic distribution of the ophthalmic subspecialist surgeon workforce and evaluate factors associated with practicing in rural areas.

Publication Rates of Oculoplastic Surgery and Orbit Abstracts Presented at Turkish Ophthalmological Association National Congresses: 10-Year Analysis.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the publication rates of abstracts related to oculoplastic surgery and orbital diseases presented at the Turkish Ophthalmological Association National Congresses (TOA-NCs) in 2013-2022.

Materials And Methods: The study included abstracts in the field of oculoplastic surgery and orbital diseases accepted for presentation at TOA-NCs between 2013 and 2022. These abstracts were reviewed in terms of presentation type (oral, poster), number of authors, study setting (university, training and research, private, public, or abroad hospital), study type (case, clinical, or basic science), study topic (eyelid, lacrimal system, orbit, or thyroid eye disease), journal publication status, time to publication (months), publishing journal (national, international), and journal impact factor.

Evaluating a Decade of Surgical Solutions: Pediatric Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction Treatment Outcomes in Malaysia.

Objective: This study aims to determine the outcomes of probing and external dacryocystorhinostomy (exDCR) for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (cNLDO) and the factors influencing the success rates in pediatric cNLDO.

Design: A retrospective sample collection was conducted at the oculoplastic referral center over 10 years (January 2012 to December 2022) for cNLDO patients who had undergone probing or exDCR.

Methodology: Data were retrospectively reviewed for patients aged ≤18 years who underwent probing or exDCR.

Postoperative Outcomes of Enucleation without Closure of the Conjunctiva.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of enucleation without conjunctival closure in a large patient cohort.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted from January 2011 to January 2024, examining 144 eyes of 143 patients who underwent enucleation without conjunctival closure by a single oculoplastic surgeon. Data collected included patient demographics, indications for surgery, implant types, and complications.

Dacryoendoscopic Confirmation of Supernumerary Punctum in the Medial Canthus Connecting to the Upper Lacrimal Canaliculus.

A 55-year-old Japanese woman presented with a 2-year history of right-sided epiphora and mucoid discharge. Slit-lamp examination revealed the presence of an additional punctum in the medial canthus. Dacryoendoscopic examination was performed to assess the connectivity of the supernumerary punctum, confirming its direct communication with the upper lacrimal canaliculus.

Marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma of the lacrimal gland in a young patient with Klinefelter syndrome: a case report.

Background: Klinefelter syndrome is considered one of the most common sex chromosome disorders affecting males. The presence of an extra X chromosome can alter the tendency to develop various cancers, including lymphomas. Lacrimal gland lymphoma is a disease of the elderly, with a median age of presentation of 70 years.

Ocular and Systemic Abnormalities in Punctal Agenesis.

Background: Punctal agenesis (PA) is a rare congenital anomaly that can occur in isolation or as part of an underlying syndrome. The benefit of genetic assessment in individuals with PA and clinical features that should prompt molecular workup has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to identify ocular and extraocular features associated with PA and determine its association with an underlying syndrome.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 3 artificial intelligence language models-GPT-3.5, GPT-4o, and Gemini, in delivering patient-centered information about thyroid eye disease (TED). We evaluated their performance based on the accuracy and comprehensiveness of their responses to common patient inquiries regarding TED.

Oculoplastic Operative Considerations for Kabuki Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Kabuki syndrome is a rare genetic disease with multisystemic effects including ocular manifestations. The authors report a patient with known Kabuki syndrome who presented with bilateral euryblepharon, bilateral ptosis, OD hypotropia, and blue sclera. A bilateral lateral tarsal strip procedure was performed followed by a left frontalis sling with a silicone implant and a right external levator advancement with success.

MRSA Cellulitis with Orbital and Retinal Abscesses Resulting in Lemierre Syndrome Following Eyebrow Piercing.

We describe a case of orbital cellulitis with abscess formation following eyebrow piercing complicated by internal jugular vein thrombosis and subretinal abscesses requiring enucleation with orbital abscess drainage. The popularity of body piercing is increasing and physicians should be familiar with the possibility and management of vision-threatening complications of facial piercing. Following left eyebrow piercing, a 20-year-old female experienced increasing periorbital swelling, erythema, chemosis, orbital pain, decreased vision, and concomitant fever, chills, and rhinorrhea.

Combined Application of Hyaluronidase and Collagenase for Late-Onset Edema in Periocular Area After Hyaluronic Acid Volume Repositioning: A Six-Case Retrospective Review.

Background And Objective: Although generally low-risk, hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers can lead to late-onset edema, particularly in the periocular region. This condition typically manifests three to four months post-injection and requires specialized management, usually with hyaluronidase. However, increased use of hyaluronidase has resulted in instances of post-hyaluronidase syndrome, leading to unaesthetic outcomes.
