Hypoxia is intricately associated with various diseases, including ischemia, vascular disorders, and cancer. Particularly in cancer cells, hypoxia promotes tumor growth, cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and enhances treatment resistance, making its detection crucial for cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, methods for detecting hypoxia are limited, often relying on single-detection systems.

Background: As non-face-to-face contact has become a daily routine owing to the development of science and technology and impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, online technology-based services (TBSSs) have been expanding. Consequently, in virtual metaverse exercise spaces, the number of participants using TBSS is increasing. This study aimed to examine the effects of TBSS characteristics on the quality of the relationship between service providers and users of metaverse exercise services.

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by concomitant sarcopenia and obesity and presents a high risk of disability, morbidity, and mortality among older adults. However, predictions based on sequential neural network SO studies and the relationship between physical fitness factors and SO are lacking. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for SO in older adults by focusing on physical fitness factors.

Histone deacetylase 11 (HDAC11) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation, such as obesity. However, the influence of HDAC11 on inflammation and the specific effect of HDAC11 on the palmitic acid (PA)-induced NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation are poorly understood. The effect of PA treatment on HDAC11 activity and the NLRP3 inflammasome was investigated in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and THP-1 cells.

Introduction: Physical fitness is regarded as a significant indicator of sarcopenia. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep-learning model for predicting the decline in physical fitness due to sarcopenia in individuals with potential sarcopenia.
Methods: This study used the 2010-2023 Korean National Physical Fitness Award data.

Our previous work showed that KRAS activation in gastric cancer cells leads to activation of an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program and generation of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs). Here we analyze how this KRAS activation in gastric CSCs promotes tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Gastric cancer CSCs were found to secrete pro-angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), and inhibition of KRAS markedly reduced secretion of these factors.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an emerging and potentially less invasive therapeutic approach for cancer that employs ultrasound (US)-sensitive agents combined with US irradiation to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in deep tumor regions. Among various cellular organelles, the mitochondria are particularly susceptible to ROS, making them an attractive target for SDT. Organic-based SDT agents with mitochondria-targeting affinity have gained considerable interest as potential alternatives to conventional SDT agents, offering significant advantages in the field of SDT.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is a positive psychological change experienced after trauma and it has gained global recognition in recent years. The present study aimed to validate a South Korean version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Expanded (K-PTGI-X) for use with trauma-exposed and bereaved samples. A national sample comprising South Korean adults was used for the analysis.

This study aimed to investigate the association between polyvictimization and offline and online sexual harassment and whether the association might be mediated by internalizing problems, low school satisfaction, and dropping out of school. The analytic sample was derived from the Children and Youth Rights Survey in South Korea. It consisted of 6353 adolescents' responses to the sexual harassment question and a set of other questions in the middle and high school questionnaires.

Objective: Guided by the routine activity theory, the current study proposes and tests pathways by which an absence of a capable guardian can contribute to interactions with motivated offenders and suitable targets, increasing the likelihood of teasing others and using alcohol.
Sample: The study participants consisted of 612 African American adolescents in four low-income neighborhoods in Chicago's Southside.
Measures: Measures include alcohol use, absence of a capable guardian, the presence of a motivated offender, target suitability, and teasing.

Chemoresistance originating from cancer stem cells (CSCs) is a major cause of cancer treatment failure and highlights the need to develop CSC-targeting therapies. Although enormous progress in both photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has been made in recent decades, the efficacy of these modalities against CSC remains limited. Here, we report a new generation photosensitizer, CA9-BPS-Cu(ii), a system that combines three subunits within a single molecule, namely a copper catalyst for CDT, a boron dipyrromethene photosensitizer for PDT, and acetazolamide for CSC targeting carbonic anhydrase-9 (CA9) binding.

Background: Patients (pts) with locally advanced gastric adenocarcinoma (LAGA) often receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy. A minority of patients do not respond to chemotherapy and thus may benefit from upfront surgery. Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) are an in vitro model that may mimic the chemotherapy response of the original tumors.

Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) represent a key barrier to successful therapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). CSCs promote the emergence of chemoresistance, triggering relapse and resulting in a poor prognosis. We herein present CDF-TM, a new small molecule-based binary prodrug conjugated with SN-38 and 3,4-difluorobenzylidene curcumin (CDF) that is specifically activated in hypoxic conditions.

The emergence of microfluidic devices and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has propelled the need for next-generation biomimetic cell culture platforms that are flexible for monitoring and regulation. Therefore, this study evaluated a CFD application in an -designed and spheroid-based flow integration 3D cell culture chip (SFI chip) to illustrate cell culture, drug screening, cytokine delivery, and differentiation of cells in a platform that partially recapitulates the natural environment. Our results show that a flow rate of 0.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2D (CMT2D), is a hereditary peripheral neuropathy caused by mutations in the gene encoding glycyl-tRNA synthetase (GARS1). Here, human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based models of CMT2D bearing mutations in GARS1 and their use for the identification of predictive biomarkers amenable to therapeutic efficacy screening is described. Cultures containing spinal cord motor neurons generated from this line exhibit network activity marked by significant deficiencies in spontaneous action potential firing and burst fire behavior.

While long-distance running has important health benefits, chronic elevation of blood pressure during exercise might induce cardiac events and sudden death. This study aimed to investigate characteristics of exercise and incidence of abnormal exercise electrocardiography findings in long-distance runners with exercise-induced hypertension. Long-distance runners (n = 606) underwent a questionnaire survey, history taking, and exercise stress testing, and they were classified into the non-exercise-induced (n = 268) and exercise-induced (n = 338) hypertension groups.

Breast cancer consists of heterogenic subpopulations, which determine the prognosis and response to chemotherapy. Among these subpopulations, a very limited number of cancer cells are particularly problematic. These cells, known as breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), are thought responsible for metastasis and recurrence.
