Unexpected pheochromocytoma leading to cardiac arrest during the perioperative period: a case report and literature review.

BMC Anesthesiol

December 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology, The Fourth Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Yiwu, Zhejiang, 322000, China.

Background: Pheochromocytomas (PCCs) are rare neuroendocrine catecholamine (CA)-secreting tumours that originate from chromaffin tissue and can produce and store CAs. Unexpected PCCs pose a serious threat to the perioperative safety of patients and a considerable challenge to anaesthesiologists because of the risks of fatal hypertensive crises and other stresses.

Case Presentation: A 37-year-old woman who was scheduled for tonsillectomy and palatopharyngoplasty under general anaesthesia experienced a malignant cardiovascular event after induction, which was characterized mainly by a sharp increase in heart rate and blood pressure, ultimately leading to cardiac arrest and the occurrence of secondary long QT syndrome.

NCAM1 modulates the proliferation and migration of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells in pulmonary hypertension.

Respir Res

December 2024

Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a malignant vascular disease characterized by pulmonary arterial remodeling. Neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM1) is a cell surface glycoprotein that is involved in a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease. However, the role of NCAM1 in PH remains underexplored.

Background: Pulmonary carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors accounting for less than 1% of all lung cancers. They are classified into two subcategories; typical and atypical carcinoids with the latter tending to grow faster. Historically, open thoracotomy was the standard approach for pulmonary resection.

The treatment landscape for IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is rapidly evolving with the introduction of novel therapies targeting diverse disease pathways. Some have already been approved in different countries, while others are under investigation in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with encouraging results. However, almost all performed RCTs have included only patients with refractory non-nephrotic proteinuria and preserved renal function.

The term chondrosarcoma refers to a rare and heterogeneous group of malignant cartilaginous tumors that are typically resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Metastatic chondrosarcoma has a poor prognosis, and effective systemic therapies are lacking. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutations represent a potential therapeutic target, but IDH inhibitors alone have shown limited clinical efficacy to date.

The Current State of the Diagnoses and Treatments for Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology, Des Moines University, West Des Moines, IA 50266, USA.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma is the most common form of kidney cancer, accounting for 75% of malignant kidney tumors, and is generally associated with poor patient outcomes. With risk factors including smoking, obesity, and hypertension, all of which have a high prevalence in the United States and Europe, as well as genetic factors including tuberous sclerosis complex and Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, there is an increasing need to expand our present understanding. The current clear cell renal cell carcinoma knowledge is outdated, with obsolete diagnostic criteria and moderately invasive surgical treatments still prevailing, partially ascribed to its resistance to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Fudan University, Key Laboratory of Public Health Safety of Ministry of Education, Shanghai200032, China.

To explore the incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a cohort aged 40 years and above in Songjiang District, Shanghai, and to analyze the association of Mediterranean diet pattern and dietary approaches in stopping hypertension pattern (DASH) with the risk of developing COPD. Based on a natural population cohort in Songjiang District, Shanghai, 27 474 adults aged 40 years and above who did not have COPD at baseline were enrolled in the study. The Cox proportional risk regression model was used to analyze the association of baseline Mediterranean diet pattern score and DASH score with the risk of COPD, and the hazard ratio () of the risk and its 95% were calculated.

Introduction: Malignant hypertension (mHTN) is a hypertensive emergency. Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a widespread complication of mHTN. Few studies have evaluated whether glomerular hematuria provides prognostic information for renal dysfunction in patients with mHTN-associated TMA.

Hematologic malignancies are a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease development. Chemotherapeutic protocols commonly include intensive fluid therapy (IFT), which may negatively influence the cardiovascular system and predispose to arterial hypertension. This study aims to evaluate atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high-sensitivity troponin T (hs-TnT), and changes in blood pressure in children with hematological malignancies undergoing intensive fluid therapy.

Visit-to-visit blood pressure variability is a factor for a series of cardiovascular diseases in hypertensive patients. Hypertension is a common complication of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our research demonstrated that blood pressure variability is more important than systolic blood pressure to be associated with the occurrence of coronary artery disease and stroke.

MMP8-mediated vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

February 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Panzhihua Central Hospital, Panzhihua 61700, China. Electronic address:

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a vascular remodeling disease that impacts the cardiopulmonary system. Due to the currently limited understanding of vascular remodeling, a cure for PAH remains elusive. This study highlights the critical role of the STAT1 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 1)/MMP8 (matrix metallopeptidase 8)/DRP1 (dynamin-related protein 1) axis in vascular remodeling and the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) has a poorer prognosis than idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with median survival of only 1 year post-diagnosis.
  • Treatments for PAH have shown limited effectiveness for PVOD, with risks such as pulmonary oedema and mixed results from case reports on medication effects.
  • Lung transplantation is the best long-term treatment for suitable patients, but candidates over a certain age or with certain cancers are typically excluded; a case study describes a successful 5-year sildenafil treatment for a 59-year-old patient with PVOD and multiple myeloma.
