Attentional focus strategies eliciting external focus of attention effectively enhance drop jump (DJ) performance, however, their effects vary depending on the words used for the instructions. We aimed to examine the effects of different words on DJ performance using instructions eliciting external focus to minimize contact time (CT) or maximize jump height (JH). Twenty collegiate athletes performed DJs from a 30-cm platform after receiving one of the four instructions: two instructions (COND 1 and 2) about minimizing CT, and two instructions (COND 3 and 4) about maximizing JH.

The discrepancy in sleep timing between weekdays and weekends - social jetlag (SJL) - is known to negatively affect student quality of life (QOL). However, the association between social jetlag and physical/mental QOL among adolescents and the precise effect of social jetlag on depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness remains unknown. This study investigated the longitudinal course, risk factors, and effects of social jetlag, a circadian misalignment, in a school-based cohort.

Social jetlag as a predictor of depressive symptoms among Japanese adolescents: Evidence from the Adolescent Sleep Health Epidemiological Cohort.

Sleep Health

October 2023

Department of Clinical Psychology, Graduate School of Education, Hyogo University of Teacher Education, Kato, Hyogo, Japan; Osaka Municipal Nanko Kita Junior High School, Osaka, Osaka, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Social jetlag, which refers to the mismatch between sleep patterns on weekdays versus weekends, is linked to depressive symptoms in Japanese adolescents, particularly varying by sex.
  • A study involving 1,493 junior high school students found different patterns of social jetlag, with significant associations to depression based on specific thresholds of sleep misalignment.
  • Results showed that girls with significant social jetlag (≥2 hours) had a higher risk of depression, while boys experienced an increased risk with negative social jetlag (<0 hours), indicating a nonlinear relationship between sleep patterns and mood.

Youth become psychologically independent by emotionally separating from their parents and simultaneously developing a sense of trust in them. While these relational components have been addressed separately, studies focusing on the change in dynamics of these components are lacking. This study examined profiles of parent-youth relationship quality based on emotional separation and parental trust, age differences in the prevalence of these profiles, and age differences in the associations between the profiles, identity, and life satisfaction.

  • - The study examined the effects of an 8-minute dermal suction treatment on joint range of motion (ROM) and muscle stiffness in 15 participants, focusing on the quadriceps femoris.
  • - Results showed that hip extension ROM improved significantly right after the treatment and at 60 and 120 minutes, but returned to baseline by 30 minutes and did not last beyond 2 hours.
  • - Passive muscle stiffness and knee flexion ROM did not show any significant changes at any time point after the treatment, indicating that the main benefit was limited to hip extension ROM for a short period.

The pretreatment method with ionic liquids (ILs) is convenient for scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of biological specimens. It needs neither fixation nor vacuum vapor deposition of metals to prevent fracture, deformation and charge-up. Although it was pointed out that the reason why the specimens are not fractured or deformed under the vacuum without fixation is the penetration of the ILs into cells and replacement with the intercellular water of the specimen, the experimental results were not yet self-consistent.
