Background: Pneumococci normally reside in the nasopharynx, and when individuals are in close contact with each other such as in a community or a family setting, it is transmitted from carriers and sometimes results in pneumonia.

Case Presentation: Case 1: The patient was a 55-year-old woman who visited the hospital complaining of fever and headache. Lumbar pain occurred on hospital day 2, and purulent spondylitis was diagnosed using lumbar MRI.

Background: We compared the quality of care for nursing- and healthcare-associated pneumonia (NHCAP) and aspiration pneumonia provided by general physicians and pulmonologists.

Methods: Questionnaires were mailed to 2490 medical facilities across Japan. The questionnaire assessed participants' implementation of microbiological investigations for NHCAP or aspiration pneumonia, as well as steps taken to prevent pneumonia recurrence (eg, use or discontinuation of drugs associated with swallowing and administration of pneumococcal polysaccharides).

We report a case of remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome in a 71-year-old woman. She referred to our hospital with finger stiffness, edema of both hands and feet, pain of bilateral shoulder, wrist, metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and ankle joints. Rheumatoid factor was negative, human leukocyte antigen -B7 antigen was positive.

RS3PE syndrome developing during the course of probable toxic shock syndrome: a case report.

Background: Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is a rare syndrome characterized by "remitting," "seronegative" (namely rheumatoid factor-negative), and "symmetrical" synovitis with pitting edema on the dorsum of the hands and feet. Recently, there have been reports that serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is elevated in this condition.

Case Presentation: An 85-year-old man visited our department with a rash that had appeared 2 days earlier and a fever that had developed on the day of his visit.

Introduction: Various causes of intractable hiccups have been reported; however, to the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports of either intractable hiccups due to esophageal candidiasis in an immunocompetent adult or improvement following antifungal therapy.

In the surgical case of a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary that arose in a 16-year-old girl, a large amount of well-differentiated and highly organized cerebellar tissue was found. Three layers of the cerebellar cortex were well formed, and synaptophysin-positive "glomeruli" were found in the granule cell layer. Some Purkinje cells exhibited focal expansion and a dysmorphic appearance of the dendrites.

Two independent guidelines on appropriate weight gain for Japanese pregnant women have been established in 1997 and 2006. This study aimed to evaluate changes in the amount of gestational weight gain in pregnant women, the birth weight of their neonates, and the incidence of complications of pregnancy and neonatal outcome in women who delivered at Hyogo Prefectural Kaibara Hospital.
