Objective: Tapentadol causes fewer gastrointestinal adverse events than other potent opioid analgesics because of its low affinity for opioid receptors; however, development of symptoms related to central nervous system disorders, including delirium, has not been well-studied. This study aimed to identify the factors that influence the development of delirium after initiation of tapentadol therapy in hospitalized patients with cancer.
Design: Retrospective study.

Aim: One of the parameters that is measurable using bioelectrical impedance is the phase angle (PhA), which is an indicator of skeletal muscle quality. The PhA reflects cellular health and nutritional status and is an important parameter for monitoring recovery after stroke. However, the factors affecting skeletal muscle quality remain unclear.

In this study, we examined the effect of a bundled approach to blood collection for blood culture on decreasing contamination. Commensal organisms were considered contaminants on the basis of the clinical course if they were recovered from only a single blood draw (set) and if a positive result for two sets was not obtained within 72 hours. The main elements of the bundle were blood collection by venipuncture, skin preparation with a chlorhexidine alcohol swab, disinfection of culture bottles, and use of a sterile blood transfer device instead of the two-needle technique for inoculation.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the suppression of arterial signal intensity between tracking and fixed saturation pulses in lower extremity magnetic resonance venography (MRV).
Methods: Forty patients with varicose veins who underwent 2D true fast imaging with steady-state free precession using tracking and fixed saturation pulses on MRV were included. A fixed saturation pulse was applied from April 2020 to May 2021, and a tracking saturation pulse was applied from June 2021 to July 2022.

In September 2023, the Japan Society of Pain Clinicians (JSPC) issued this consensus statement on chronic pain treatment in cancer survivors. With recent advances in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, its prognosis has improved, so prolonged pain in cancer survivors is considered to represent chronic pain and should be addressed. In this statement, we emphasize that not all cancer survivor pain is cancer pain.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) as measured with the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) or Short Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12) and mortality risk in patients with diverse types of cancer.
Methods: A literature search was conducted using CINAHL, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus databases to collect articles published before December 2022. Of these, observational studies that examined the association between HRQOL and mortality risk in patients with various cancer types were extracted.

We retrospectively evaluated the impacts of using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and its timing on posttransplant outcomes for 9766 adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) between 2013 and 2022 using a Japanese database. We separately evaluated three distinct cohorts based on graft type: 3248 received bone marrow transplantation (BMT), 3066 received peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT), and 3452 received single-unit cord blood transplantation (CBT). Multivariate analysis showed that G-CSF administration significantly accelerated neutrophil recovery after BMT, PBSCT, and CBT.

Computed tomography-guided puncture is a useful technique for various interventional radiology procedures. Puncture from various locations and angles becomes possible using this technique. Moreover, bone and air do not interfere with the computed tomography image.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a female donor to a male recipient (female-to-male allo-HCT) is a well-established risk factor for chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and non-relapse mortality (NRM). The inferior outcomes of female-to-male allo-HCT are considered to be due to allo-immunity against H-Y antigens. However, the influence of minor histocompatibility antigens in haplo-identical allo-HCT remains to be elucidated.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) and hypokalaemia are common adverse events after treatment with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB).
Objectives: Because excess potassium (K) leakage occurs during renal tubular injury caused by L-AMB, measuring the decrease in rate of serum K concentration might be more useful to assess the renal impact of L-AMB than hypokalaemia identified from a one-point measurement. The effects of a decrease in K concentration and duration of hypokalaemia on AKI were investigated.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the influence of easing COVID-19 preventive measures following its downgrading to a common infectious disease on COVID-19 occurrence among hospitalized patients.
Methods: Nosocomial occurrence of COVID-19 was compared between periods with national infectious disease category 5 versus the preceding category 2 equivalent. Changes in the revised manual included a shorter duration of work restrictions for infected health care practitioners (HCPs); no work restriction for HCPs exposed to SARS-CoV-2 with a negative test on days 1, 3 and 5; discontinuation of universal pre-admission screening; and pre-emptive isolation of patients without screening.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is an important therapeutic option for patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the development of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allo-HSCT remains a challenge. Although systemic steroid therapy is the established first-line therapy for acute GVHD (aGVHD) and chronic GVHD (cGVHD), many patients are unresponsive or resistant to corticosteroid therapy, and the response is insufficient.

Belumosudil mesylate is a selective Rho-associated coiled-coil kinase 2 inhibitor with immunomodulatory and antifibrosis effects. This multicenter, open-label, single-arm study evaluated belumosudil 200 mg once daily as second or subsequent line of therapy (LOT) in 21 Japanese patients ≥12 years of age with steroid-dependent/steroid-resistant chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). The primary endpoint of best overall response rate (ORR) at 24 weeks after enrollment of the last patient was 85.

Prognosis for patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has been improving. Short-term survival information, such as crude survival rates that consider deaths immediately after the transplantation, may not be sufficiently useful for assessing long-term survival. Using the data of the Japanese HCT registry, the net survival rate of patients who survived for a given period was determined according to age, disease, and type of transplant.

Background: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) require high rates of medication adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for a successful treatment outcome. Understanding the factors associated with incomplete adherence among those receiving integrase strand transfer inhibitor-containing single-tablet regimens (INSTI-STRs) is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to incomplete ART adherence among Japanese PLWH receiving INSTI-STRs.

Sarcopenic dysphagia is defined as dysphagia caused by sarcopenia of the whole body and swallowing-related muscles. We present a case of sarcopenic dysphagia with improved swallowing function after strength training of swallowing-related muscles using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with an intraductal papillary mucinous tumor of the pancreatic duct.
