T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is a postthymic T-cell neoplasm with a characteristic morphology and heterogeneous immunophenotype. Most cases of T-PLL express membrane T-cell receptors (TCRs) of the alphabeta phenotype. We experienced a 30-year-old man suffering from TCRgammadelta T-cell leukemia with morphology compatible to T-PLL with a postthymic phenotype.

We report a patient with ovarian malignant mixed mesodermal tumor (MMMT) that produced immunoreactive human chorionic gonadotropin beta-subunit (IR-hCG beta). Qualitative analysis indicated that IR-hCG beta in the patient's serum represented the free form of the beta-subunit of hCG. Immunohistochemical localization of hCG beta in MMMT was observed in the sarcomatous stroma, but not in the adenocarcinoma component.

Purpose: To establish dosimetric predictors of radiation esophagitis (RE) in patients treated with a combination of carboplatin, paclitaxel, and radiotherapy.

Methods And Materials: Three-dimensional radiotherapy plans of 26 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer who received 50-60 Gy of radiotherapy concurrently with weekly administration of carboplatin (AUC 2) and paclitaxel (40-45 mg/m(2)) were reviewed in conjunction with RE. The factors analyzed included the following: percentages of organ volumes receiving >40 Gy (V40), >45 Gy (V45), >50 Gy (V50), and >55 Gy (V55); the length of esophagus (total circumference) treated with >40 Gy (LETT40), >45 Gy (LETT45), >50 Gy (LETT50), and >55 Gy (LETT55); the maximum dose in the esophagus (Dmax); and the mean dose in the esophagus (Dmean).

A new method of marking small pulmonary nodules situated deep within the visceral pleura using a transbronchial approach has been developed. Once the tip of the sheath catheter has passed the tumor and reached the visceral pleura, as confirmed by computed tomography fluoroscopy, indigo carmine is injected through a bronchoscope into the lung parenchyma just beneath the visceral pleura. No complications related to the procedure were experienced.

Comparative immunostaining with antibodies against gastric mucin and p53 was performed on 6 cases of minimal deviation adenocarcinoma (MDA) of the uterine cervix. The MDAs consisted of predominant areas of glands lined by extremely well-differentiated tall columnar epithelial cells with little cytological atypia and minor foci of less well-differentiated glandular epithelium with a minor degree of nuclear atypia. Immunostaining for gastric mucin with a monoclonal antibody HIK1083 revealed that all the tumors areas of typical MDA were partly immunoreactive for HIK1083, but the coexisting less well-differentiated glands were essentially negative.

The combination of docetaxel (TXT), gemcitabine (GEM), and cisplatin (CDDP) produced a regression in a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung that had recurred after radiation therapy plus chemotherapy, and was resistant to the combination of carboplatin (CBDCA) with etoposide (ETP) or paclitaxel (TXL). The patient was a 62-year-old man with squamous cell lung cancer, which was first successfully treated by a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy, but showed local recurrence after 8 months. Although the recurrence was treated with CBDCA plus ETP and then TXL, the tumor continued to grow with symptomatic progression of airway stenosis.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a glycoprotein hormone composed of two nonidentical α- and β-subunits, is normally produced by trophoblasts. Serum and urine from some patients with nontrophoblastic tumors are found to contain similar immunoactivity to the β-subunit of hCG and this phenomenon has been recognized as an ectopic hCGβ production (1). Elevated levels of ectopic hCGβ are detected more frequently in urine than in serum.

A 22-year-old man, in first complete remission of acute myelogenous leukemia, developed a high grade B cell lymphoma 19 months after an allogeneic bone marrow transplant (allo-BMT) from an HLA-identical unrelated donor. Biopsy of a cervical lymph node revealed a lymphoma that was negative for Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small nuclear RNAs (EBERs) in situ hybridization. Genotypic analyses identified the lymphoma to be of donor origin, and there was no evidence of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in the lymphoma by Southern blot analysis.

Ovarian thecoma with ascites and high serum levels of CA125.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

July 2000

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hyogo Medical Center for Adults, Akashi, Japan.

We report a 34-year-old woman with an ovarian thecoma and ascites who exhibited high serum levels of CA125. Measuring serum tumor markers and imaging are two important diagnostic tools for malignant ovarian tumors. In the present case, a preoperative diagnosis of benign ovarian tumor could not be made due to the elevation of CA125 (895 U/ml) and nonspecific MRI findings.
