Ochronotic pigmentation of connective tissue is the central pathological process in the rare metabolic disease alkaptonuria (AKU). Tissue pigmentation in AKU occurs due to unmetabolised homogentisic acid (HGA) in the circulation, caused by an enzyme deficiency in the liver. Ochronotic pigmentation, derived from HGA, has previously been reported and described in large joints obtained from arthroplasty surgeries, which typically have advanced disease.

Introduction: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a leading cause of respiratory failure, with substantial attributable morbidity and mortality. The small animal models that are currently used for ARDS do not fully manifest all of the pathological hallmarks of human patients, which hampers both the studies of disease mechanism and drug development.
Objectives: To examine whether the phenotypic changes of primate-like tree shrews in response to a one-hit lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injury resemble human ARDS features.

Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) may severely affect respiratory function and evolve to life-threatening hypoxia. The clinical experience led to the implementation of standardized protocols assuming similarity to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the histopathological and functional patterns is essential to better understand the pathophysiology of COVID-19 and then develop new therapeutic strategies.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease whose hallmark histopathologic finding is the presence of ubiquitin-positive hyaline intranuclear inclusions in neuronal and non-neuronal cells. We present a case of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease in a 61-year-old Asian man with a history of repeated episodes of altered mental status, long-standing bladder dysfunction, and cerebrovascular accidents. The patient had characteristic magnetic imaging findings of high signal along the cortico-medullary junction on diffusion-weighted sequences and symmetric T2 hyperintensity in the paravermal area of the cerebellum.

Objective: To describe an innovative alternative to exploratory laparotomy in a newborn with a sub capsular hepatic hematoma secondary to umbilical vein catheterization.
Clinical Case: A preterm baby with a history of hyaline membrane disease, pulmonary hypertension, and large patent ductus arteriosus, requiring mechanical ventilation and the use of vasoactive drugs. Umbilical catheters were inserted and through an abdomen X-ray, we observed their proper position.

In 2003, we briefly reported the remarkable osteopathy of a 12-year-old boy who at age two months began fracturing his limbs with subsequent hyperplastic callus formation and expansion and fusion of appendicular bones. By age ten years he had coalesced his lumbosacral spine, pelvis, femurs, and leg and foot bones as a single structure. Computed tomography of expanded bone revealed a thin cortical shell, diminished irregular trabeculae, and cystic areas.

Background: To compare the chest computed tomography (CT) images of children and adults in families with clusters of humidifier disinfectant-related lung injury (HDLI) after cessation of exposure to humidifier disinfectant (HD).
Methods: We reviewed medical records of 19 families with 43 patients (21 adults, 22 children) among families, which had at least one adult and one child with HDLI. Each family was exposed to the same HD exposure environment.

Background: The growing morbidity and mortality rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has forced researchers to find more efficient strategies for controlling this disease. Studies have proven the important role of alteration in iron, zinc and selenium metabolism in CKD pathological process. Nanotechnology, through synthetizing nano metal-organic framework (NMOF) structures, can be employed as a valuable strategy for using these trace elements as the key for modification and improvement of CKD-related pathological events.

Data on pathologic changes of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are scarce. To gain knowledge about the pathology that may contribute to disease progression and fatality, we performed postmortem needle core biopsies of lung, liver, and heart in four patients who died of COVID-19 pneumonia. The patients' ages ranged from 59 to 81, including three males and one female.

Background: Lungs from patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have shown typical signs of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), formation of hyaline membrane mainly composed of fibrin and 'ground-glass' opacity. Previously, we showed plasminogen itself is a key regulator in fibrin degradation, wound healing and infection.
Aim: We aimed to investigate whether plasminogen can improve lung lesions and hypoxemia of COVID-19.

Pulmonary hyalinising granuloma (PHG) is a rare fibrosclerosing inflammatory lung condition of unknown aetiology. It is characterised by solitary or multiple pulmonary nodules that are usually found incidentally while imaging the chest for other reasons. We report two cases of histologically proven PHG diagnosed at the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman.

Objective: To analyze the radiological aspects of pulmonary atelectasis in newborns on mechanical ventilation and treated in an intensive care unit, associating the characteristics of atelectasis with the positioning of the head and endotracheal tube seen on the chest X-ray, as well as with the clinical variables.
Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of 60 newborns treated between 1985 and 2015. Data were collected from medical records and radiology reports.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a major cause of mortality in critically ill patients. Patients are currently managed by protective ventilation and alveolar recruitment using positive-end expiratory pressure (PEEP). However, the PEEP's effect on both pulmonary metabolism and regional inflammation is poorly understood.
