Background & Aims: Cirrhosis is associated with insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance, which may be caused by impairments at different tissue levels (liver, skeletal muscle, and/or beta cell).

Methods: Here, glucose kinetics at whole-body and skeletal muscle level in patients with cirrhosis (Child-Pugh A and B) were studied during parenteral nutrition using the isotope dilution technique and arteriovenous balance approach across the leg. As opposed to the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp or glucose tolerance tests applied in previous studies, this approach provides a nutrient composition more similar to a normal meal while circumventing any possible portal-systemic shunting, impaired hepatic uptake and incretin effect.

J Reprod Immunol

June 2024

The Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Unit, the Capital Region, Copenhagen University Hospitals, Rigshospitalet and Hvidovre Hospital, Kettegård Alle 30, Hvidovre 2650, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Copenhagen University, Blegdamsvej 3B, Copenhagen 2200, Denmark; Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre Hospital, Kettegård Alle 30, Hvidovre 2650, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • Preeclampsia may lead to poor remodeling of placental spiral arteries, which, combined with abnormal angiogenesis and excessive complement activation, contributes to recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).
  • The study examines angiogenic factors and lectin complement pathways in early pregnancies of 76 women with secondary RPL and finds that certain biomarkers, like elevated VEGF levels, are linked to pregnancy loss.
  • Results indicate that inadequate placentation and impaired angiogenesis may underlie pregnancy losses in women experiencing secondary RPL, with a notable association between ficolin-2 levels and pregnancy outcomes, while Mannose-binding-lectin showed no significant correlation.

Background: Ensuring vaccination coverage reaches established herd immunity thresholds (HITs) is the cornerstone of any vaccination programme. Diverse migrant populations in European countries have been associated with cases of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and outbreaks, yet it is not clear to what extent they are an under-immunized group.

Methods: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize peer-reviewed published primary research reporting data on the immune status of migrants in EU/EEA countries, the UK and Switzerland, calculating their pooled immunity coverage for measles, mumps, rubella and diphtheria using random-effects models.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated risk factors for rebleeding and 30-day mortality in patients who underwent prophylactic transarterial embolization for peptic ulcer bleeding at Rigshospitalet, Denmark, from 2016 to 2021.
  • Out of 176 patients, 25% experienced rebleeding and 15% died within 30 days; factors like not following a standardized embolization procedure significantly increased these risks.
  • More than one endoscopy before the procedure raised rebleeding odds, while a high Rockall-score correlated with increased mortality; factors like active bleeding did not impact these outcomes.
