Adhesions frequently occur postoperatively, causing morbidity. In this noninterventional observational cohort study, we enrolled patients who presented for repeat abdominal surgery, after a history of previous abdominal myomectomy, from March 1998 to June 20210 at St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers.

Background: Human dermal allografts have been used for over a decade for interpositional repair of rectoceles. How do dermal allografts perform with regards to success rate and complications with 8 years' minimum follow-up?
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 41 consecutive patients undergoing dermal allograft interposition procedures between October 2001 and December 2005 (Repliform, Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA) for stage two, three, and four International Continence Society (ICS) symptomatic rectocele repairs with bilateral sacrospinous fixation. Failure was defined as recurrent stage two International Continence Society prolapse (Ap ≥ -1 and/or Bp ≥ -1).

Background: The era of Open Access (OA) publication, a platform which serves to better disseminate scientific knowledge, is upon us, as more OA journals are in existence than ever before. The idea that peer-reviewed OA publication leads to higher rates of citation has been put forth and shown to be true in several publications. This is a significant benefit to authors and is in addition to another relatively less obvious but highly critical component of the OA charter, i.

Most of the scientific work presented as abstracts (platforms and posters) at various conferences have the potential to be published as articles in peer-reviewed journals. This DIY (Do It Yourself) article on how to achieve that goal is an extension of the symposium presented at the 36(th) European Congress of Cytology, Istanbul, Turkey (presentation available on net at http://alturl.com/q6bfp).

Intraoperative evaluation of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in patients with breast carcinoma allows surgeons to complete axillary lymph node dissection in one procedure if any SLN shows metastasis. The accuracy of intraoperative pathological diagnosis is critical for decision-making. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our rapid intraoperative cytologic diagnosis of SLN through comparing with the final surgical pathologic diagnosis of the corresponding lymph nodes.

Background: Leptin and its soluble receptor (sOB-R) are important to regulation of body composition but there are no data on the developmental variations in these plasma variables and their relationship with body composition measurements,
Methods: Weight, length, and body composition (bone, fat and lean mass) by dual energy absorptiometry, and plasma variables were measured in healthy infants at 2, 4, 8 and 12 months.
Results: 15 whites and 29 African Americans (21 males and 23 females) with mean birth weight 3357 +/- 45 (SEM) g and gestation of 39.3 +/- 0.

Background: Despite the theoretical benefits of nutrient-enriched formula given to preterm infants after hospital discharge, its role in reversing growth deficits after hospital discharge remains poorly defined.
Objective: The aim was to determine the effect of different formulas on the growth, bone mass, and body composition of preterm infants after hospital discharge.
Design: This was a randomized, double blind comparison of a nutrient-enriched formula (EF) and a formula for term infants (TF) given for 1 y after hospital discharge.

Hypoxia treatment of normal peritoneal fibroblasts results in alterations that are characteristic for fibroblasts obtained from postoperative peritoneal adhesion tissue. In this study, we have shown that hypoxia treatment enhances normal peritoneal fibroblast elimination by lymphokine-activated killer cells to the level of adhesion tissue fibroblasts, suggesting a pivotal role of hypoxia in the adhesion development.

Problem: Post-operative adhesion tissue fibroblasts (ATF) differ from normal peritoneal fibroblasts (NPF). Natural immune response participates in the elimination of altered cells. In this study, we investigated NPF and ATF expression patterns of immune response-related markers, and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cell-mediated fibroblast elimination in vitro.

Objective: To identify factors associated with the development of neonatal injury in the setting of shoulder dystocia.
Study Design: Medical record ICD-9 codes and a computerized perinatal database were reviewed to identify cases of shoulder dystocia from January 1996 to January 2001 in a tertiary care center. For confirmation of the diagnosis and collection of data, both maternal and neonatal charts were then reviewed and neonatal injuries categorized as either neurological (brachial plexus injury) or skeletal (clavicular fracture, humeral fracture).

We hypothesized that the increased apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in men compared to women was secondary to an increased proportion of apneas in men as measured by the ratio of the apnea index to the apnea-hypopnea index (AI/AHI ratio), and that the influence of gender was independent of other demographic factors such as body mass index (BMI) and neck circumference (NC). Database analysis of 501 patients (218 men and 283 women) who underwent polysomnography between August 2001 and June 2003 and who were found to have an AHI of at least five events per hour was performed. Respiratory parameters were compared between genders.

Objective: To evaluate the association between maternal body mass index and obstetrical outcome in patients with a prior cesarean undergoing a trial of labor versus elective repeat cesarean.
Study Design: A perinatal database between 1991 and 1997 was used to identify secundipara at term after a previous cesarean section. In different groups according to maternal body mass index, the rates of successful vaginal birth after caesarean, uterine scar separation, and other obstetrical outcomes were evaluated.

Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study among third-trimester pregnancies with preeclampsia (PIH) compared with normotensive controls. Serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, and resistin were measured before delivery by radioimmunoassay or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a repeated antenatal ultrasound examination improves fetal cardiac visualization for the obese and nonobese population.
Methods: A computerized ultrasound database (October 1999-June 2003) was used to identify singleton pregnancies undergoing repeated prenatal ultrasound examinations because of initial suboptimal ultrasonographic visualization (SUV) of the 4-chamber view, outflow tracts, or both. Women with maternal diabetes, abnormal maternal serum screening results, or known fetal anomalies at the initial examination were excluded.

Study Design: Women whose delivery was complicated by shoulder dystocia were studied and compared with a control group matched for parity, race, labor type (spontaneous or induced), and birth weight (BW). Accuracy (%) was defined as [(EFW-BW)/BW] x 100.

Background: Collagen induced arthritis (CIA) is an animal model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) amenable to immunotherapy directed against tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha).
Objective: To evaluate whether local TNF receptor (TNF-R) gene therapy in DBA/1 mice exerts an influence beyond anti-inflammatory effects. Two measures of CIA pathogenesis were investigated-namely, immunity to collagen II (CII) 245-270 peptide (the major immunodominant epitope within bovine CII) and the preferential activation of T cell Vbeta8.
